Hemigrammus boesemani is a small, slender characid from the sluggish lowland rivers and swampy backwaters of Suriname, French Guiana, and the lower Amazon in Peru — a quietly appealing tetra that remains extremely scarce in the hobby despite being assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern. Reaching around 1.5–2 in standard length, it inhabits slow or still, often tannin-stained waters and shares its range with the better-known H. rodwayi. Its taxonomic history is complicated — it was once treated as a subspecies of H. micropterus — and it continues to carry an Incertae Sedis placement within Characidae.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus boesemani was described by Jacques Géry in 1959. The species has a tangled taxonomic past: it was treated for a time as a subspecies of Hemigrammus micropterus before being elevated to full species rank, and it currently carries an Incertae Sedis placement within Characidae, reflecting unresolved questions about phylogenetic position within the broad tetra assemblage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name Hemigrammus boesemani Géry, 1959.

The genus Hemigrammus is a large and morphologically conservative group within the characid tetras. It is distinguished from the closely related Hyphessobrycon primarily by the presence of scales on the lower lobe of the caudal fin, though this character is not always clear-cut, and recent molecular work has repeatedly shown Hemigrammus to be non-monophyletic. The taxonomic position of H. boesemani in particular may shift as phylogenomic analyses continue to resolve relationships within Characidae.

The species is named after Marinus Boeseman (1916–2006), the Dutch ichthyologist at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden, who collected extensively in Suriname and whose Neotropical material informed much of Géry's mid-twentieth-century descriptive work on South American characids.

Morphology

Hemigrammus boesemani is a slim, moderately elongate tetra reaching around 1.5 in standard length by FishBase data, with some records extending to 1.5–2 in. The body form is typical of the genus: fusiform, slightly compressed laterally, with a small upturned mouth and the characteristic adipose fin of the Characidae.

Coloration is subtle compared with many popular tetras. The body is translucent to silvery, often with a faint greenish or brassy sheen along the flanks. A dark lateral stripe runs from the caudal peduncle region toward the head, though its expression varies with condition and light. The fins are generally clear or lightly pigmented. No bold markings distinguish this species as a showpiece fish, which partly explains its rarity in the trade.

Sexual dimorphism in H. boesemani can be assessed by examining the swim bladder through the body wall: in males the swim bladder tapers to a point posteriorly, while in females it is rounded at the rear. Females in breeding condition are visibly fuller-bodied.

Habitat

Hemigrammus boesemani occurs across a relatively broad lowland range spanning Suriname, French Guiana (recorded from the Maroni, Mana, Iracoubo, Sinnamary, Kourou, Comté, and Kaw river systems), and Peru in the lower Amazon basin. It inhabits the lower reaches of rivers, sluggish tributaries, calm backwaters, and swampy areas — slow-flowing or still water is strongly preferred.

Like many Guianan and Amazonian characids, it is at home in soft, acidic to moderately neutral blackwater and clearwater environments. FishBase records water parameters of 73–79 °F, pH 5.8–7.4, and hardness up to 16 dH. Some sources extend the pH range down to 5.5, consistent with the tannin-stained, humus-rich waters typical of the coastal Guiana lowlands. Aquatic vegetation, submerged leaf litter, and marginal plant growth provide cover and foraging substrate.

The species is sympatric with Hemigrammus rodwayi across parts of its Guianan range. Despite occupying a reasonably broad geographical area, H. boesemani is described as rarely encountered in the wild by collectors, which contributes to its scarcity in hobbyist supply chains.

Feeding

Hemigrammus boesemani is an omnivore, as is characteristic of most small Hemigrammus species. In the wild it forages in the water column and at the surface, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other aquatic organisms — as well as plant material and organic detritus available in its slow-water habitats.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of prepared foods, including quality flake, small granules, and micropellets. Offering a varied diet that includes frozen or live foods — brine shrimp nauplii, Daphnia, microworms, bloodworm — improves condition and encourages natural foraging behaviour. Its small size means it is most comfortable with foods scaled to its mouth; very fine foods are preferable to large pellets. Like most tetras, it benefits from multiple small feedings daily rather than a single large meal.

Mating

Hemigrammus boesemani is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, following the typical pattern of the genus. Spawning occurs between one or more males and a receptive female, with eggs deposited among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or other suitable substrate; the adults pay no further attention to the eggs and will consume them if given the opportunity.

Spawning can be triggered in aquarium conditions by mimicking the species' preferred environment: soft, slightly acidic water, subdued lighting, and the presence of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Males may display to females by chasing and lateral posturing. Because of the species' rarity in the hobby, detailed accounts of mating behaviour are not widely documented, but the mechanics are consistent with other Hemigrammus species.

Breeding

Breeding H. boesemani follows the general egg-scattering protocol for small Hemigrammus. Conditioned adults spawn in groups or pairs, depositing small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops. Because adults will eat both eggs and fry, breeders typically remove the spawning medium to a separate rearing vessel or move the adults out after spawning.

Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at typical breeding temperatures. Larvae become free-swimming after a further 3–4 days, at which point they require very small first foods: infusoria, paramecia, or commercial liquid fry foods. After several days they can accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely ground dry foods. The fry are light-sensitive in their early stages and should be reared in a dimly lit tank. Growth is gradual, and raising fry to juvenile size requires patient, consistent feeding and good water quality. This species has rarely been bred in captivity and remains a genuine challenge to obtain in the first place.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus boesemani is a peaceful, shoaling tetra that should be kept in a group of at least six to ten individuals to express natural behaviour and reduce stress. It does best in a well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration that replicates its native slow-water habitat: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 5.5–7.4), temperatures of 73–79 °F, and low to moderate hardness. Tannin-stained water — achieved with botanicals, Indian almond leaves, or peat filtration — is appreciated and can encourage breeding behaviour.

A minimum tank volume of around 15 US gal is suggested for a small group. The species is compatible with other small, peaceful fish: other small Hemigrammus, Hyphessobrycon, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras, and similarly sized rasboras or livebearers are all suitable companions. It is a mid-water to upper-water swimmer that will remain shy if kept in insufficient numbers or in a sparsely planted tank without visual cover.

Hemigrammus boesemani is rarely available in the trade and should be sought from specialist importers or breeders rather than general pet stores. When obtained, it tends to acclimatise well to aquarium conditions and can live five to ten years under good care. Its understated colouration means it is unlikely to dazzle in a community display, but for the specialist interested in Guianan characids or in maintaining rarely kept species, it is a rewarding fish to work with.

Conservation

Hemigrammus boesemani is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 20 December 2020 by Douglas Rodríguez-Olarte and Donald Taphorn. The LC rating reflects the species' reasonably broad distribution across Suriname, French Guiana, and the Peruvian Amazon, and the absence of documented evidence of population decline sufficient to warrant a threatened category.

Despite its Least Concern status, the species is notably scarce in the wild by collector reports and is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade. The slow-water swampy habitats it prefers in the Guianan coastal lowlands are subject to general pressures common to that region, including deforestation, agricultural runoff, and land conversion — threats that may affect population connectivity over the long term even if they have not yet triggered formal uplisting.

No specific conservation measures are in place for H. boesemani, and it is not a focus of captive breeding programmes in the way that more charismatic or more critically threatened species are. Aquarists who obtain the species contribute to maintaining a captive population of a rarely kept fish, though this is incidental rather than a primary conservation goal given its current status.
