Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia chrysargyrea was originally described by Albert Günther in 1864 as Tetragonopterus chrysargyreus, in the fifth volume of his Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum (p. 328). The type locality is the Essequibo River, Guyana, and the holotype is held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1864.1.21.69). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) lists the valid combination as Moenkhausia chrysargyrea (Günther, 1864); the parenthetical authority reflects the transfer from Tetragonopterus.
The genus Moenkhausia is placed within the family Characidae, the large and diverse family of New World characins. Within some current molecular phylogenies the broader Characidae has been reorganised into subsidiary families; Eschmeyer's Catalog notes a subfamily assignment of Stichonodontinae within the broader Characidae framework. The species epithet chrysargyreus derives from Greek roots meaning gold-silver, likely a reference to the reflective, metallic colouration of the flanks — a feature shared across many Moenkhausia and a recurring inspiration for species names in the genus.
Morphology
Moenkhausia chrysargyrea attains a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in, making it one of the larger members of the genus. Like other Moenkhausia it is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed characin with the typical tetra profile: a forked tail, a small adipose fin, and a relatively large eye. The flanks are described as having a metallic, silvery-golden sheen consistent with the species name.
Detailed published meristic data for this species are sparse in the accessible secondary literature, but the overall form follows the Moenkhausia bauplan common to the Guiana and Amazon basin members of the genus. Sexual dimorphism, where noted in the group, typically amounts to females becoming more full-bodied in the abdomen when in spawning condition; males tend to be slightly slimmer.
Habitat
The species is distributed across the Guianas coastal river systems and the Amazon basin, with the Essequibo River of Guyana serving as the type locality. It is reported as abundant in slow-moving creeks with variable substrate including sand, rocks, and accumulations of plant debris — a substrate mosaic typical of small lowland Neotropical streams where leaf litter and woody material collect in quieter reaches.
Water conditions recorded for the species span temperatures of 73–82 °F (73–82 °F) and a pH range of 6.0–7.2, placing it in soft to neutral, warm lowland waters. This range is consistent with the physicochemistry of many Guiana Shield and upper Amazon drainages, where slow, shaded creeks tend toward the slightly acidic side of neutral.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Moenkhausia chrysargyrea a trophic level of 3.5, indicating an omnivorous diet with a modest proportion of animal matter. At this trophic position it likely consumes small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and fallen terrestrial insects — alongside plant material, algae, and detritus, in proportions that shift with seasonal availability.
In the aquarium it can be expected to accept the broad diet typical of Moenkhausia generally: good-quality flake and small pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and Daphnia, and some vegetable matter. Feeding small amounts multiple times a day rather than one large meal suits the constant foraging behaviour characteristic of active schooling characins.
Mating
Moenkhausia chrysargyrea, as a member of the genus Moenkhausia, is an egg-scattering open spawner following the typical characin reproductive pattern. No parental pair bond is formed; males display and court females, driving them toward fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or other suitable spawning substrate where eggs are scattered and fertilised.
Spawning behaviour in the genus typically involves the male closely following the female through the water column, with brief side-by-side contacts during which eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle among fine vegetation or onto substrate. No specific mating observations for this species appear in the accessible literature, but the pattern is consistent across Moenkhausia and there is no indication this species diverges from it.
Breeding
As with other egg-scattering Moenkhausia, Moenkhausia chrysargyrea offers no parental care; adults are liable to consume their own eggs and should be removed after spawning, or eggs transferred to a separate rearing vessel. Eggs are expected to hatch within a few days at typical tropical temperatures in the 77–81 °F range, and the small fry will require fine first foods — infusoria or commercial fry preparations — before transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered flake.

Given its size (to 4.5 in SL) a breeding tank of reasonable volume — 20 US gal or more — with a cover of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops over a spawning grid, soft slightly acidic water, and well-conditioned adults would follow the standard approach for larger Moenkhausia.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia chrysargyrea is an active schooling fish and, at up to 4.5 in, one of the larger tetras available to aquarists. It requires a spacious aquarium — a tank of at least 47 in in length is appropriate for a proper group of six or more — with open swimming space in the middle and upper water column. Water parameters should mirror the species' natural range: temperature 73–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, soft to slightly hard water with good filtration and regular partial water changes.
It is a robust, undemanding fish once settled. Suitable tankmates are comparably sized, peaceful species that will not be bullied or intimidated by a boisterous school: larger peaceful characins, calm cichlids of similar size, or robust catfishes sharing its soft-water preference. The species is not widely kept in the hobby, so sourcing may require specialist suppliers; availability is intermittent outside South America.
Conservation
Moenkhausia chrysargyrea is listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in March 2021. This reflects the species' broad distribution across the Guianas and Amazon basin, its apparent abundance in suitable slow-moving creek habitat, and the absence of evidence for major range-wide population decline.
As with many wide-ranging Neotropical characins, the principal long-term threats are habitat alteration — deforestation, agricultural run-off, and stream channelisation affecting the slow, vegetated creek habitats it favours — and the general degradation of lowland Amazonian and Guiana drainages. At present these pressures have not driven the species to a threshold warranting a higher threat category. No specific conservation actions are recorded for this species.
