The glowlight tetra is one of the most recognisable small characins in the freshwater hobby — a slender, translucent fish with a blazing copper-orange stripe that runs from the snout tip to the base of the caudal fin, glowing as though lit from within. Native to the blackwater rivers of Guyana's Essequibo and Corentyne basins, it has been a staple of the ornamental trade since its introduction in 1933 and remains among the easiest peaceful schooling fish for a soft-water community aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus erythrozonus was described by Mary Durbin in 1909 from material collected in what is now Guyana, and the valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hemigrammus erythrozonus Durbin, 1909. The genus Hemigrammus sits within the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes, and encompasses a large number of small, schooling tetras distributed across South America and one African species.

The species has no known synonyms under current usage and has remained in Hemigrammus since its original description. Its specific placement within Hemigrammus hinges on standard characid characters — the presence of scales on the caudal fin and the configuration of the lateral line — though the broader internal systematics of Characidae have been revised repeatedly and some generic boundaries remain under discussion. Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the valid placement and authorship.

Morphology

The glowlight tetra is a slender, fusiform characin reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length at maturity, with the body slightly deeper than a pencilfish but more elongate than the cardinal or neon tetra. The body is largely translucent, with the internal organs and vertebral column faintly visible through the flanks, and the ground colour is pale silver to pinkish-grey.

The species' most defining feature is a vivid horizontal stripe of copper, orange-red, or gold that runs the full length of the body from the snout — passing through the eye — to the base of the caudal fin. This stripe is bordered by a narrower pale or white line below in many individuals, and the leading ray of the dorsal fin carries a matching orange-red blotch, mirroring the body stripe. The intensity of the stripe responds to health, mood, and lighting: fish in top condition under warm, tannin-stained water glow especially brightly, while stressed or chilled individuals pale noticeably.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Females are heavier-bodied, particularly when gravid, and the stripe in ripe females may appear rounder in cross-section against the swollen abdomen. Males are slightly more slender. Both sexes otherwise share the same colouration.

Habitat

In the wild, Hemigrammus erythrozonus inhabits the Essequibo River basin and the Corentyne River basin of Guyana. These are lowland Guiana Shield drainages that carry both clear-water and blackwater tributaries; the glowlight tetra is associated particularly with tannin-stained, blackwater environments — forest streams and river margins with sandy or gravelly substrates, dense leaf litter, submerged root masses, and overhanging riparian vegetation that filters the light to a warm amber.

The chemistry of these habitats is soft and acidic. Field data and aquarium-husbandry references converge on a pH range of approximately 5.5–7.0 and temperatures of 73–82 °F (73–82 °F). Hardness is very low in the blackwater reaches of the Essequibo system, with general hardness rarely exceeding a few degrees. The fish is typically found in the mid to upper water column in slow-moving or still stretches, often in areas with dense marginal vegetation or drifting leaf detritus that provides refuge and foraging habitat.

Feeding

Hemigrammus erythrozonus is an opportunistic omnivore that feeds in the upper and middle water column. In its native blackwater habitats the natural diet consists primarily of small aquatic invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and worms — along with plant matter and organic detritus. It is a visual, active feeder that targets small, moving prey items.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts a wide range of foods. High-quality micro-pellets and fine-grade flake form a practical staple, but the fish responds visibly to small live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp nauplii, Daphnia, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and micro-worms. A diet incorporating these live and frozen items produces superior colouration and brings fish into breeding condition. As with most small tetras, offering food in several small meals rather than a single large feeding reduces waste and maintains water quality.

Mating

The glowlight tetra is an egg-scattering, open spawner with no parental care — a typical breeding strategy for the genus Hemigrammus and for small characins generally. Courtship is brief and not elaborately ritualised: males pursue and display to females in the plant thickets or over the substrate, chasing and circling them, with spawning triggered by the female's gravid condition and suitable environmental cues such as slightly raised temperature, dim lighting, and very soft water.

Spawning occurs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or in the water column near it, with the pair making short, quivering drives during which eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The eggs are small, slightly adhesive, and sink or adhere loosely to plant leaves and fine substrate. Because adults — including the spawning pair — will consume their own eggs immediately after release, successful captive reproduction requires separating the eggs or removing the adults at once.

Breeding

Breeding Hemigrammus erythrozonus in captivity is achievable with modest preparation. The conditioning approach typically involves separating a small group of males and females for one to two weeks on a high-quality diet of small live and frozen foods before introducing them to a dedicated spawning tank. A small aquarium of 5.5–10 US gal with very soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.8, hardness well below 5 dGH) and a temperature at the warmer end of the species' range — around 79–82 °F — provides the stimulus the fish respond to.

Spawning substrate should consist of dense clumps of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops that allow eggs to settle and hide from the adults. Lighting should be dim. Eggs hatch within 24–36 hours under warm conditions, and the larvae are free-swimming within two to three days. First foods for the fry must be extremely small — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — for the first week or so, before graduated introduction of newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Fry growth is moderately rapid in clean, warm water with frequent small feedings, and juvenile colouration begins to appear within a few weeks.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus erythrozonus is a classic community fish: peaceful, hardy within its preferred water parameters, and deeply rewarding to keep as a school. A group of eight or more individuals should be considered the minimum, as the species is a shoaling fish that is noticeably more settled, bolder, and more colourful in numbers. Smaller groups tend to be skittish and subdued. The species occupies the mid to upper water column and pairs naturally with bottom-dwelling species such as dwarf corydoras or peaceful loricariids that do not compete for the same space.

Water quality should reflect the soft, warm, slightly acidic conditions of the Essequibo blackwaters. A pH between 6.0 and 7.0 suits most captive populations, though the species tolerates moderately neutral water more readily than many soft-water tetras, and hardness up to about 12 dGH is generally acceptable. Temperature should be kept between 23 and 82 °F. A planted aquarium with dark substrate, driftwood, and some peat or catappa leaf to tint the water brings out the stripe at its most vivid. Strong filtration flow should be avoided — the fish prefer calm water.

Although the species was once collected from the wild extensively, virtually all glowlight tetras in the trade today are farm-raised, making captive-bred stock easy to source and removing any collecting pressure from wild populations.

Conservation

No formal IUCN Red List assessment has been published for Hemigrammus erythrozonus under a confirmed taxonomy ID accessible in current records. The species is sometimes cited as Least Concern on the basis of aggregator sources, reflecting its continued presence across the Essequibo and Corentyne drainages and its widespread availability through commercial aquaculture. The Guiana Shield drainages where it is native are, for the most part, less severely degraded than many Amazonian river systems, though deforestation, mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining, and habitat alteration in Guyana's interior are documented threats to freshwater biodiversity across the region.

The aquarium trade's long reliance on captive-bred stock is broadly positive from a conservation standpoint: farm-produced fish have dominated the hobby since at least the mid-twentieth century, and there is little incentive for wild collection of a species that breeds so readily in captivity. Nonetheless, the patchy data on the species' precise distribution, population status, and local threats within Guyana underscores the general gap in formal conservation assessment for many small Neotropical characins.
