Hemigrammus orthus is a small, slender characid from the river basins of Guyana, reaching little more than 1.5 in in total length. Described by Durbin in 1909 from a Guyana creek below Kaieteur Falls, it inhabits clear to tea-coloured, acidic rivers of the Essequibo and Demerara drainages — waters coloured and softened by forest leaf litter. It is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with a stable population estimated above 10,000 individuals, though gold mining within its range represents a persistent localised threat.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus orthus was described by Mary Durbin in 1909, with the type locality recorded as Tukeit Creek, a tributary of the Potaro River below Kaieteur Falls in what is now Guyana. The holotype is deposited at the Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH 53034, ex CM 1458), and eleven paratypes are held at the Natural History Museum in London. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises H. orthus Durbin, 1909 as the valid name.

A taxonomic complication has been noted: FishBase flags the possibility that H. orthus may be a synonym of Hemigrammus bellotii (Steindachner, 1882), a species with wider Amazonian distribution. The relationship has not been formally resolved, and H. orthus is currently maintained as a valid species. FishBase also tentatively places it in the broader distribution that includes the lower Tapajós River, though the IUCN assessment — which postdates those records — treats the species as endemic to the Essequibo and Demerara basins of Guyana.

Hemigrammus is a large genus of small characins — the 'hemigrammuses' — widely distributed across tropical South America. The genus is diagnosed by a set of scale and lateral-line characters; most species are small, silvery schooling fish found in forest streams and river shallows.

Morphology

Hemigrammus orthus is a small, slender-bodied characid. FishBase records a maximum total length of 1.5 in, placing it among the smaller members of the genus. The body form is typical of the group: compressed laterally, moderately elongate, with the large eye characteristic of small characins adapted to dim, tannin-stained water.

No detailed published description of external colouration for H. orthus is available in the research literature consulted for this article. In general form and size it resembles other small Hemigrammus from Guiana shield drainages — likely a translucent to silvery fish with the indistinct lateral stripe common in the genus, but specific pattern details are data sparse for this species in the available sources.

Habitat

The IUCN assessment places H. orthus within the Essequibo and Demerara river basins of Guyana, with the type locality in Tukeit Creek, a Potaro River tributary below Kaieteur Falls. FishBase additionally reports records from the lower Tapajós River drainage in Brazil, though the IUCN treats the range as Guyanese. The species is categorised as benthopelagic in freshwater, inhabiting tropical river systems.

The habitat is described as rivers with swift to moderate current, clear to tea-coloured water, acidic pH, and low mineral content — the classic conditions of Guiana shield blackwater and clearwater streams draining ancient Precambrian rock through forest. Tea-coloured water in this region is stained by dissolved humic and tannic acids from decaying plant material, driving pH low and buffering capacity down. Such environments are oligotrophic but rich in small invertebrates and organic particles.

Gold mining is noted by the IUCN as the primary threat within the species' range, with the potential to increase sedimentation and mercury contamination in affected tributaries. Between 1 and 10 per cent of the population is estimated to occur within protected areas.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies of Hemigrammus orthus in the wild have not been published in the sources available for this article. As a small, benthopelagic characin from soft, acidic forest streams, it almost certainly feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and worms — along with fine organic detritus and any algae or plant material available in the water column and at the substrate margin. This feeding mode is typical of small Hemigrammus species across Amazonian and Guiana shield drainages.

In an aquarium context, fish of this size and type generally accept good-quality micro-pellets or fine flake, along with frozen or live small invertebrates such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms. Frequent small feedings suit the metabolism of a fish this size better than a single large daily meal.

Mating

No specific behavioural observations of courtship or mating in Hemigrammus orthus have been published in the literature consulted for this article. Small characins in the genus Hemigrammus are generally egg-scattering open spawners: males pursue and court females with fin displays and body posturing, and spawning occurs in short bursts over fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or among substrate debris. Eggs are adhesive or semi-adhesive and scattered without parental guarding.

No parental care is provided by either sex — both adults will consume eggs given the opportunity, which is the norm for the genus. Based on the reproductive biology of closely related small Hemigrammus species, the general approach for breeding small egg-scattering characins applies: condition adults on varied live and frozen foods, provide a breeding tank with fine-leaved plants (such as Java moss) or synthetic spawning mops over a bare or fine-gravel base, and use soft, slightly acidic, warm water that approximates the species' natural habitat.

Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Eggs typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and the small fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as a first food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Specific data on clutch size, incubation time, and fry development for H. orthus remain sparse in the available literature.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus orthus is not a widely traded aquarium fish and is rarely encountered in the hobby. Its small size — just over 1 in — and likely peaceful, schooling disposition would suit it to a small species tank or a community aquarium housing other diminutive, non-aggressive fish from similar South American forest-stream habitats: small rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf corydoras, or other small tetras.

Water chemistry should reflect its origin in soft, acidic Guiana shield blackwater: temperatures in the range typical for lowland Amazonian and Guyanese fish (approximately 75–82 °F), pH on the acid side of neutral (5.5–7.0), and low hardness. Good filtration with gentle flow, leaf litter or driftwood to tint the water, and subdued lighting with live or artificial plants would approximate the conditions of its native creek habitat. Because the species is data sparse in hobbyist literature, keepers should treat it with the care appropriate to a wild-caught or rarely bred fish of uncertain requirements.

Conservation

Hemigrammus orthus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 20 December 2020 and published in 2022 by assessors Donald C. Taphorn and Douglas Rodríguez-Olarte. The population is estimated at more than 10,000 individuals and is considered stable. No major population decline has been documented, and the species is not subject to targeted collection for the ornamental trade at a scale sufficient to threaten it.

The principal identified threat is gold mining, which is prevalent within the Essequibo and Demerara drainages of Guyana and which carries risks of sedimentation, habitat disruption, and mercury contamination in affected waterways. Between 1 and 10 per cent of the population is estimated to occur within formally protected areas, leaving the majority of its range outside active conservation management. The combination of a stable but moderately small population, a restricted geographic range within a single country, and an active industrial threat in that range suggests that continued monitoring is warranted even under a Least Concern assessment.
