Hemigrammus neptunus is a small, slender characid from the black-water rivers of the Bolivian Amazon — the Mamoré, Guaporé, Beni, and Madre de Dios drainages — where it inhabits soft, acidic waters threading through the lowland savannahs and gallery forests of one of South America's great river systems. Described by Zarske and Géry in 2002, it has since been transferred to the resurrected genus Holopristis, though the original combination continues in wide usage and the FishBase summary retains Hemigrammus neptunus as the searchable name. Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus neptunus was formally described by Axel Zarske and Jacques Géry in 2002. The species was originally placed in Hemigrammus, one of the largest and most diverse tetra genera in the family Characidae, but has since been assigned to Holopristis, a genus that Eigenmann erected early in the twentieth century and that has been revived to accommodate a cluster of species that share morphological characters separating them from the bulk of Hemigrammus. FishBase currently lists the valid name as Holopristis neptunus, though the original combination Hemigrammus neptunus Zarske & Géry, 2002 remains in circulation in the literature and the hobby. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for valid names.

The genus Hemigrammus, in its broadest traditional sense, is a sprawling assemblage that ichthyologists have long recognised as almost certainly non-monophyletic. Ongoing molecular and morphological revisions have been peeling off groups — Holopristis among them — and redistributing them. Hemigrammus neptunus thus illustrates a recurring pattern in neotropical characid systematics: a species described under a catch-all genus, then refined as revisionary work proceeds. The epithet neptunus alludes to the Roman god of the sea, presumably in reference to the aquatic habitat or to some aspect of the fish's appearance, though the authors' specific reasoning was not detailed in sources available to the cache.

Morphology

Hemigrammus neptunus is a small, streamlined characid reaching a maximum standard length of 1.5 in. Like other members of its broader generic alliance, it has the typical tetra body plan: laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied, with a complete lateral line, an adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin. A 2025 ichthyofaunal survey of Beni and Mamoré river tributaries in the Llanos de Moxos wetlands of the Bolivian Amazon — one of the largest seasonally flooded savannahs in South America — documented Holopristis neptunus in black-water and clear-water bodies. Measured conditions at survey sites included a pH of approximately 6.5 and temperatures around 77 °F (77 °F), consistent with the soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral waters typical of seasonally flooded lowland habitats in this region. FishBase records the species as tropical with a preference for black-water rivers.

Feeding

No detailed gut-content or dietary study specific to Hemigrammus neptunus is available in the sources consulted. Breeding

The standard approach for small, egg-scattering Hemigrammus-allied tetras applies by inference: condition a small group of adults on live and frozen foods, then move them to a separate, dimly lit breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops and soft, acidic water in the 75–79 °F (75–79 °F) range. Hemigrammus neptunus is a seldom-seen species in the aquarium hobby, available occasionally from specialist importers who source unusual Bolivian tetras. Its care requirements align with those of other small black-water Hemigrammus species: soft, slightly acidic water in the 75–79 °F range, subdued lighting, a well-planted tank, and dark substrate to bring out the fish's colouration and reduce stress. Water quality should be stable and excellent, with low nitrates.

At 1.5 in it is suited to nano and small-community aquariums. It is a peaceful schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six; fewer individuals tend to produce a skittish, poorly displaying group. Appropriate tankmates are similarly sized, non-aggressive species: other small tetras, dwarf rasboras, small corydoras, and diminutive Apistogramma pairs. Larger or boisterous tankmates are unsuitable. Because it is infrequently imported and seldom bred in captivity at scale, it appeals primarily to tetra enthusiasts and keepers interested in lesser-known South American species.

Conservation

Hemigrammus neptunus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, as referenced by FishBase citing a 2025 IUCN assessment. The species occupies a broad range across multiple Bolivian and Brazilian river systems — Mamoré, Guaporé, Beni, Madre de Dios, portions of the Madeira drainage, and the upper Paraguay Basin — which provides a buffer that small, range-restricted species lack.

The Llanos de Moxos wetlands of the Bolivian Amazon, one of the core areas where this species has been documented, are subject to seasonal flooding patterns that sustain high fish diversity. Ongoing pressures on Amazonian lowland habitats — agricultural expansion, land-use change, and hydrological modification — are relevant to the long-term health of the fish communities in these systems, though H. neptunus does not appear to face immediate range-wide threats at the level warranting a threatened listing.
