Hydrocynus forskahlii is a sleek, stripe-flanked piscivore that ranges more widely than any other tigerfish, threading the Nile, Niger, Congo, Volta, Senegal, and Gambia river systems as well as Lake Turkana and Lake Albert across tropical Africa. Its silvery body is ruled by prominent dark longitudinal stripes, its jaws bear the fearsome canine teeth that give the genus its Greek name — 'water dog' — and it hunts in pelagic open water, corralling small fish in loose shoals. Though far less massive than the celebrated goliath tigerfish it is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, yet faces mounting pressure from commercial fisheries, dams, and water degradation across its pan-African range.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was originally described by the French ichthyologist Georges Cuvier in 1819 as Hydrocyon forskahlii; the genus spelling was later emended to Hydrocynus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the current valid name as Hydrocynus forskahlii (Cuvier, 1819), with the authority parenthesised because Cuvier placed it in a genus that has since been revised. Among the synonyms is Salmo roschal Walbaum, 1792, which has been treated as a nomen oblitum, and Hydrocyon lineatus Schlegel, 1863.

The genus Hydrocynus belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — a group that unites the tigerfish with many of the characin-like fishes of sub-Saharan and Nile drainages. Molecular studies have shown that H. forskahlii is distinct from the larger H. vittatus, with which it was historically confused; the two were sometimes lumped as a single wide-ranging taxon. Systematics work has also identified a potentially cryptic lineage confined to the Sanaga River basin of Cameroon, suggesting the species complex may be more diverse than current taxonomy acknowledges.

The specific epithet forskahlii honours the Swedish explorer and naturalist Peter Forsskål (1732–1763), who collected natural history specimens in the Middle East and North Africa on Carsten Niebuhr's expedition before dying of plague in Yemen. His collections informed some of Cuvier's early descriptions.

Morphology

H. forskahlii is the most slender-bodied member of the genus, with a depth roughly 22.6% of standard length — noticeably shallower than the bulkier H. vittatus. Maximum recorded length is 30.5 in SL and maximum weight approximately 15.5 kg, though fish approaching those dimensions are exceptional; most encountered by anglers and in the trade run considerably smaller. FishBase records a rod-caught record of around 4 kg.

The body is silvery white to pale grey on the flanks, with a series of pronounced dark longitudinal stripes running from head to tail along the scale rows — the feature that gives this and its relatives the common name tigerfish (though the stripes are horizontal rather than the vertical bars of the Asian arowana or other 'tiger'-patterned fishes). The tail fin is grayish with the lower lobe tinged orange, red, or yellow. The jaws are upturned, projecting the characteristic canines that H. forskahlii shares with all members of the genus; two rows of teeth are present, the outer canines being the most prominent. There are two scale rows between the lateral line and the origin of the pelvic fins, a meristic feature useful in distinguishing this species from relatives in the same basin.

Habitat

H. forskahlii is one of the most broadly distributed freshwater predators in Africa. Confirmed drainages include the Nile (including Lake Albert), Lake Turkana, the Omo River, the Congo basin, and across West Africa the Chad, Niger, Ogun, Ouémé, Mono, Volta, Comoé, Bandama, Sassandra, Gambia, Senegal, Cross, Wouri, and Sanaga systems. This breadth sets it apart from most African characins and reflects its tolerance of a wide range of riverine conditions.

The species is characteristically pelagic, preferring the open water zone and the upper portions of the water column in large rivers and lakes rather than structured littoral habitats. It favours well-oxygenated stretches and is classed as potamodromous — undertaking seasonal migrations within freshwater systems, including movements into lake tributaries during the rains that are associated with reproduction. In the wild it forms loose shoals, a social tendency that plays a role in cooperative hunting of schools of small fish.

Feeding

H. forskahlii is an apex piscivore in most systems it inhabits. Studies in Lake Kainji (Nigeria) showed that smaller individuals prey predominantly on small clupeiforms, while larger fish shift heavily to Alestes baremoze and comparably sized cyprinids and other characins — a classic ontogenetic diet shift from small prey to prey approaching the predator's own body length. The species is also documented eating insects and, occasionally, plant material and snails, suggesting opportunistic foraging when fish prey is scarce.

H. forskahlii is cannibalistic; larger individuals readily consume smaller conspecifics, a factor with direct implications for group housing in captivity. In the wild it hunts in loose shoals, using cooperative herding to concentrate prey schools. It is a fast-water pursuit predator — the slender body and forked tail are adaptations for burst speed rather than sustained cruising — and takes prey primarily in the open water column rather than from the bottom.

Mating

Like other tigerfish, H. forskahlii is believed to undertake spawning migrations into river tributaries and flooded margins during the wet season; breeding migrations into lake tributaries during the rainy period have been reported in at least some populations. Maturity is reached at approximately 8 in standard length, substantially below the maximum size, allowing fish to contribute reproductively before reaching the large sizes targeted by commercial fisheries.

Sexual dimorphism is not strongly marked externally, and detailed observations of courtship behaviour in the wild are limited. The species is an open-water egg scatterer with no parental care, consistent with the broader pattern in Alestidae. Eggs are likely broadcast over suitable substrate during the spawning migration, with no guarding or nest construction.

Breeding

H. forskahlii is only very rarely reproduced in captivity and has no established aquarium-breeding record in the hobby literature. The combination of large adult size, pelagic schooling lifestyle, and long migratory spawning movements makes replication of the trigger cues for spawning extremely difficult in an aquarium context. No documented captive spawning protocol exists.

In the wild, the species appears to spawn seasonally in connection with flooding events and tributary inflows, a pattern typical of potamodromous African fish. Eggs are adhesive or semi-buoyant and receive no parental attention; larvae presumably drift into productive flooded zones where food availability is high. Growth to the 8 in maturity threshold likely takes several years under natural conditions, and maximum longevity in the wild is not precisely established.

In the aquarium

H. forskahlii is the most frequently encountered Hydrocynus species in the aquarium trade, though it remains rare by any measure — tigerfish in general are specialist fish for large-system keepers rather than the mainstream hobby. Its more moderate adult size compared to H. goliath makes it marginally more tractable, but even modest-sized specimens require a very large, well-filtered aquarium; a fish growing toward 23.5–27.5 in needs a tank measured in thousands of litres if it is to thrive rather than merely survive.

The species is an active, pelagic predator and strongly piscivorous: tankmates are potential prey, and care must be taken to house it only with fish large enough to be safe. Cannibalism between conspecifics is documented, and mixing size classes is inadvisable. The jaws and teeth are capable of inflicting serious wounds during feeding or when the fish is startled; nets and hands should be handled with respect. Water should be warm, well-oxygenated, and clean; the species' pelagic nature means it needs open swimming space with strong filtration and good surface aeration. It does not adapt well to small or cluttered quarters.

The aquarium hobby notes that body colour is silvery with clear stripes and an attractively coloured tail, and newly imported fish often acclimate slowly to dead or prepared foods after a period of live-fish feeding.

Conservation

H. forskahlii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2020 (assessed 8 May 2019) by a team including Akinyi, E., Azeroual, A., and Entsua-Mensah, M., among others. The LC status reflects the species' broad distribution across multiple large river systems, which provides a buffer against localised declines. However, the assessment identifies a suite of threats: commercial fishery pressure, dam construction that interrupts migratory routes and alters flood regimes, water pollution, groundwater extraction, and drought exacerbated by climate change.

The potamodromous lifestyle makes the species particularly sensitive to barriers such as dams and weirs that sever the connection between feeding and spawning habitats. Population trends in heavily fished systems such as Lake Kainji, the Niger, and parts of the Nile have not been well quantified, and the LC assessment should not be read as indicating the species is under no pressure. Its moderate fishing vulnerability score (39/100 on the FishBase scale) reflects the combination of reasonable productivity at 8 in maturity and the risk posed by larger-scale commercial netting of shoaling aggregations.

Molecular evidence for a cryptic lineage in the Sanaga basin also raises the possibility that what is currently treated as a single wide-ranging species may include more narrowly distributed taxa deserving separate conservation consideration once systematics are resolved.
