Hydrocynus vittatus — the tigerfish — is one of sub-Saharan Africa's most formidable freshwater predators, a silver torpedo armed with a mouthful of interlocking, dagger-shaped teeth that remain visible even when the jaws are shut. Distributed from the Nile drainage in the north to the Limpopo and Zambezi in the south, and across the Congo, Niger, and Senegal basins to the west, it is both a flagship of African river fisheries and a supreme gamefish that tests the limits of conventional angling. In the aquarium trade it occupies a niche for serious large-predator keepers: spectacular in size and bearing, but demanding an enormous commitment of space and attention.

Taxonomy & naming

Hydrocynus vittatus was described by Francis de Laporte de Castelnau in 1861. The genus Hydrocynus belongs to the family Alestidae, the African characins, a group of characteristically torpedo-shaped, piscivorous fishes with a wide distribution across sub-Saharan Africa. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hydrocynus vittatus Castelnau, 1861.

The genus Hydrocynus contains several species and has at various times been placed within the broader Characidae before Alestidae was stabilised as a distinct family. Within its genus, H. vittatus is the most widely distributed species and the only one found throughout southern Africa; in that region it has no close congeners and is the apex characid predator of large river systems. The specific epithet vittatus is Latin for 'banded' or 'striped', a reference to the longitudinal dark stripe that runs along the flank in fresh specimens and juveniles.

Morphology

Hydrocynus vittatus is a large, powerfully built, fusiform fish. FishBase records a maximum fork length of 41.5 in in males and 29 in in females, with a maximum recorded weight of 28 kg. Most aquarium-kept specimens reach around 29.5 in. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, built for sustained pursuit in open water, with a deeply forked tail and a single dorsal fin set near the midpoint of the body.

The dentition is the species' most striking anatomical feature: a single row of large, conical, blade-like teeth in each jaw, arranged so that the upper and lower sets interlock precisely when the mouth closes, leaving their tips projecting like the teeth of a zip-fastener. These teeth are visible from outside even when the fish is not feeding. The flanks are silver to metallic gold, marked by a broad dark longitudinal stripe and several horizontal rows of dark spots or streaks. The fins are often reddish or orange-tipped in fresh specimens. Females grow somewhat shorter than males on average, but otherwise the sexes are similar in external appearance.

Habitat

Hydrocynus vittatus occupies large rivers, major lakes, and floodplain systems across a vast swath of sub-Saharan Africa. Its native range encompasses the Congo River basin, the Niger and Bénoué, the Ouémé, the Senegal, the Chad basin, the Volta, Cross, Sanaga, and Mono systems, the Nile and Omo drainages, and southward through the Zambezi, Limpopo, Rovuma, Shire, Rufiji, and Ruaha rivers, as well as major lakes including Tanganyika, Rukwa, Albert, and Kariba, and the Okavango and Malagarazi systems.

Within these systems it strongly favours warm, well-oxygenated open water in the main channels of large rivers and the pelagic zones of lakes. FishBase records a preferred temperature range of 72–82 °F and classifies the species as potamodromous — undertaking migrations within freshwater, particularly in connection with the seasonal floodplain cycle — and demersal in the sense of associating with large open bodies of water rather than heavily vegetated shallows. Juvenile and sub-adult fish form roving schools of like-sized individuals, a behaviour that persists in adults in some lake populations.

Feeding

Hydrocynus vittatus is an obligate piscivore in all but the earliest juvenile stages. FishBase reports that fish above approximately 3.5–4 in standard length feed exclusively on other fishes; below that threshold they also take aquatic invertebrates and insects. Principal recorded prey include alestid fishes such as Brycinus and Micralestes, cyprinids, and the clupeid sardine Limnothrissa in lake environments. FishBase also records Caridina shrimps and adult insects as occasional components of the diet.

The hunting strategy is one of active pursuit: tigerfish are fast-burst predators that use the main current or open water to run down prey, and the interlocking teeth grip slippery fish firmly once contact is made. The trophic level is recorded at 4.4 by FishBase, reflecting its apex predator position. In captivity the species can be trained onto dead food items such as whitebait and fish fillet, though live prey is strongly preferred by newly acquired specimens.

Mating

Hydrocynus vittatus is an open-water egg-scatterer that practises no parental care. Mature adults undertake potamodromous movements in riverine systems, and spawning is typically associated with the seasonal flood cycle, when rising waters open access to floodplain habitats that serve as nursery grounds for larvae and fry.

Sexual maturity in FishBase data is reached at a fork length of approximately 15.5 in, with a generation time of 3.7 years (range 3.0–5.0 years). Population doubling time is estimated at 1.4–4.4 years under median conditions, indicating moderate resilience. Males and females do not show strong external dimorphism during the reproductive period, and beyond the size difference noted above, sex determination requires examination of internal characters in wild-caught fish.

Breeding

Hydrocynus vittatus has been bred in captivity, but documentation is very limited and no established breeding protocol exists for home aquaria. In the wild, breeding follows the egg-scatter model typical of large characids: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are released into open water or among flooded vegetation with no subsequent parental involvement. Larvae and juveniles recruit to floodplain and littoral nursery areas where invertebrate prey density is higher before transitioning to the piscivorous adult diet.

For aquarists, captive breeding is essentially an impractical goal without extraordinary facilities: the fish reaches sexual maturity at roughly 15.5 in fork length, requires a very large volume of water, and would need companions of similar size to stimulate spawning behaviour. Any breeder pursuing the species seriously should be prepared for multi-year, large-tank projects rather than conventional hobby breeding setups.

In the aquarium

Hydrocynus vittatus is a demanding and ultimately very large aquarium fish that belongs only in the hands of experienced large-predator keepers with genuine facilities to match the species' needs. Seriously Fish recommends keeping the species alone or with same-sized conspecifics; its speed and predatory drive mean it will take almost anything that fits in its mouth, and even fish too large to eat may be injured by investigatory bites. A standard domestic aquarium is inadequate for a full-grown adult.

Water conditions recorded by Seriously Fish are 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–8.0, and hardness 5–25 dH — a moderately wide tolerance that reflects the broad range of large-river environments this fish naturally inhabits. Strong filtration, vigorous oxygenation, and very regular water changes are necessary; the species produces large amounts of metabolic waste and is intolerant of deteriorating water quality. It can be trained onto dead foods, but this may take patience with wild-caught individuals. Given its status as a major gamefish and commercial species across most of its range, sustainably sourced aquarium specimens are almost always wild-caught.

Conservation

Hydrocynus vittatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessment version 2025-2, assessed 14 February 2025), reflecting its very wide distribution across sub-Saharan Africa and ongoing population viability despite fishing pressure. The species supports important commercial and artisanal fisheries across much of its range and is among the most sought-after sport-fishing targets on the continent — the Zambezi and Okavango populations in particular draw international fishing tourism.

Conservation concern is localised rather than global. A South African Water Research Commission study identifies the tigerfish as a flagship species in the north-eastern part of the country (Limpopo and associated systems), where dependence on intact floodplain habitats for breeding and feeding makes the population sensitive to river impoundment, flow regulation, and riparian degradation. In Kruger National Park and adjacent systems, tigerfish populations serve as ecological indicators of river health. Habitat modification, not direct overexploitation, is the principal threat where population declines have been noted.
