Taxonomy & naming
Hydrocynus goliath was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1898 from material collected in the Congo River basin. The genus Hydrocynus belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — which, together with the Neotropical families Characidae and others, makes up the broader order Characiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Hydrocynus goliath Boulenger, 1898 as the valid name; the authority is not parenthesised because the species was originally described in Hydrocynus, where it remains.
The genus Hydrocynus contains a small number of large, predatory characins distributed across sub-Saharan African river systems and the East African rift lakes. H. goliath is the largest of them and stands apart from its congeners by its sheer size alone. Common synonymy in the aquarium literature sometimes confounds Hydrocynus goliath with the more widespread H. vittatus (tigerfish of southern and eastern Africa), but the two are distinct: H. goliath is confined to the Congo system and Tanganyika, while H. vittatus has a much broader range.
Morphology
Hydrocynus goliath is the largest characiform fish in Africa, reaching a maximum recorded fork length of 52.5 in and a maximum weight of 50 kg. The body is elongate, laterally compressed, and powerfully muscular — built for burst swimming in open, fast water. The head is large and the jaws are formidable: the species carries 12 to 20 teeth in the upper jaw and 8 to 14 in the lower, interlocking conical fangs that can inflict severe lacerations and are capable of puncturing bone.
The colour pattern is silvery overall, with a series of dark horizontal stripes or a reticulated pattern along the flanks that gives the common name 'tigerfish.' The caudal fin is deeply forked, and pectoral and pelvic fins are well-developed. Sexual dimorphism is present: females can be distinguished from males, and females tend to be larger-bodied. The combination of size, tooth count, and pelagic body form makes H. goliath immediately recognisable among African freshwater fishes.
Habitat
Hydrocynus goliath inhabits the Congo River basin, ranging from the lower Congo upstream through the main channel to the upper Lualaba, and it also occurs in Lake Tanganyika. Within this range it is a pelagic species of large rivers and open-water lake zones, occupying the mid-water and surface layers where it pursues prey. It is not a species of marginal, vegetated, or shallow slow-water habitats.
FishBase records temperature parameters of 73–79 °F, pH 6.5 to 7.5, and hardness of 0 to 25 dH across its range, reflecting the broad chemical diversity of Congo basin waters. The Congo is famous for its powerful, deep, and fast-flowing reaches — including some of the deepest river stretches known anywhere — and H. goliath is one of the few large predators adapted to exploit the open pelagic zone of this system. It supports commercial fisheries throughout its range.
Feeding
Hydrocynus goliath is a strictly piscivorous ambush and pursuit predator. It feeds almost exclusively on other fish, which it seizes with its battery of large interlocking teeth. There is no evidence of omnivory or invertebrate feeding in adults; the entire dentition and body form are optimised for catching and subduing fish prey.
This species is responsible for documented attacks on humans in the Congo River, a fact recorded in the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service ecological risk screening. The combination of great size, power, acute predatory reflexes, and habitat in fast, turbid water makes it dangerous to fishermen and swimmers. In commercial fisheries it is both a significant food fish and an accidental hazard. Its piscivory is absolute: there is no plant or invertebrate supplementation that would make it manageable in captivity, even disregarding its adult size.
Mating
Detailed wild spawning observations for Hydrocynus goliath are sparse in the published literature. The broader genus Hydrocynus is understood to be a broadcast spawner in the characiform manner — eggs are scattered in open water or over substrate without parental care — and H. goliath is presumed to follow the same pattern.
As with other large pelagic characins, spawning likely occurs during seasonal river-level fluctuations linked to the Congo basin's rainfall regime, with fish moving into shallower or flooded marginal areas to spawn. No captive breeding of H. goliath has been documented, and the specific cues, courtship behaviour, and spawning substrate preferences of this species in the wild remain poorly described.
Breeding
Hydrocynus goliath has not been bred in captivity, and no documented breeding accounts exist in the aquarium literature. Its enormous adult size, specialist piscivorous diet, and the logistical demands of housing a fish that reaches 50 kg and over a metre in length make captive reproduction impractical.
In its natural range the species is exploited by commercial fisheries that take adults, and management of the population depends on the natural productivity of the Congo system rather than on any captive supplementation. The IUCN notes its presence within Nsumbu National Park in Zambia (Lake Tanganyika), which provides some degree of protection for a portion of the population.
In the aquarium
Hydrocynus goliath is wholly unsuitable for the home aquarium. Adults exceed 52.5 in fork length and 50 kg; even juveniles grow rapidly into fish that require enormous volumes of water, a species-only or very carefully managed predator setup, and live fish as a primary food source. No standard aquarium configuration can meet these needs.
The species has been noted in the context of the exotic-fish trade as an ecological risk precisely because of its size, aggressive predatory behaviour, and documented willingness to attack humans. Seriously Fish explicitly notes it is unsuitable for aquarium life. It is held in a small number of large public aquariums capable of housing giant predatory fish, but it is not a species for private keeping. Aquarists interested in large African predatory characins are better served by smaller Hydrocynus species such as H. vittatus or H. forskahlii, both of which remain challenging but manageable fish.
Conservation
Hydrocynus goliath is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published on 2025-02-14 and conducted by Lwabanya Mabo. The species is widespread across the Congo basin and Lake Tanganyika, and it supports commercial fisheries throughout its range, indicating that populations remain sufficient to sustain harvest.
Identified threats include agricultural expansion and associated land-use change, overharvesting through fishing and aquaculture operations, dam construction and water management affecting river flow and connectivity, and pollution. The species is recorded as present in Nsumbu National Park in Zambia, which provides a degree of formal protection for the Lake Tanganyika population. Given the scale of the Congo system and the species' wide distribution, the current assessment reflects a population that, while subject to multiple stressors, has not yet declined to a level triggering a threatened category.
