Hyphessobrycon auca was described by Almirón, Casciotta, Bechara and Ruíz Díaz in 2004 on the basis of specimens collected from ponds within the Esteros del Iberá, Corrientes province, Argentina. The valid name, as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Hyphessobrycon auca Almirón, Casciotta, Bechara & Ruíz Díaz, 2004. It is placed within the large, polyphyletic genus Hyphessobrycon, which encompasses hundreds of small South American characids. No synonyms are currently recorded.
The specific epithet auca derives from the Mapuche word for "free" or "wild", a reference to the open wetland character of the Esteros del Iberá where the species lives. Within Hyphessobrycon the species belongs to a radiation of small, often brilliantly coloured tetras that are characteristic of South American lowland drainages.
Morphology

The body form is typical of the genus: moderately deep and laterally compressed, with the large eyes, forked caudal fin, and small adipose fin characteristic of characids.

Habitat

Feeding

The rain-fed ponds it inhabits are likely subject to seasonal temperature fluctuation, and some tolerance of a modest range is probable.
As a small, schooling characid it should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals in a well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration. Tankmates should be peaceful and similarly sized. Given the species' conservation status, acquisition of wild-caught individuals is inadvisable; only captive-bred stock should be sought.
