Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus was described by Max Ellis in 1911. The type locality is the Rio Parahyba at Campos, in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus Ellis, 1911, with authority in parentheses not required since the species has always been placed in Hyphessobrycon.
The genus Hyphessobrycon is one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae and contains a large number of small, laterally compressed tetras distributed across tropical and subtropical South America. The yellow tetra belongs in a grouping of small Hyphessobrycon with paired lateral bars, but generic boundaries in this complex have shifted repeatedly with molecular and morphological revisions, and relationships within the group remain incompletely resolved. For the present, H. bifasciatus remains a valid and stable name under the Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus reaches a maximum of approximately 2 in total length, with a standard length of 1.5–2 in reported for large adults. The body is the typical Hyphessobrycon profile: moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a blunt snout and a relatively large eye.
The common name captures the fish's most distinctive feature — a warm golden-yellow to straw-coloured base on the flanks that intensifies in well-conditioned fish, especially males. Two dark vertical bars mark the body: one just behind the operculum and a second further back along the flank, and it is these that the specific epithet bifasciatus (Latin, twice-banded) references. The fins are largely hyaline. Females in breeding condition are noticeably deeper-bodied and plumper than males; males are more intensely coloured.
Habitat
The yellow tetra is distributed through coastal river drainages from Espírito Santo to Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, as well as in the upper Paraná basin — a range that spans both Atlantic drainages and an interior basin connection. Seriously Fish describes typical habitat as floodplain tributaries, lakes, and streams under forest cover, the sort of slow to gently flowing, shaded water that is characteristic of many small characids in this region.
Water conditions across its range span a fairly broad envelope: FishBase records temperatures of 68–77 °F and a pH range of 5.8–8.0, while Seriously Fish cites pH 5.0–7.5 and hardness in the 36–268 ppm range, reflecting the variety of soft, acidic Atlantic forest streams and harder, more neutral inland waters the species occupies. This breadth makes H. bifasciatus one of the more adaptable Hyphessobrycon.
Feeding
In the wild Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus is an omnivore, feeding on aquatic invertebrates and fallen fruit — a diet consistent with the forest-edge and floodplain habitats it occupies. Like most small characids it is an opportunistic feeder that takes whatever suitable food items are available in the water column and at the surface.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of foods without difficulty. A varied diet based on good-quality flake or micro-pellets, supplemented with frozen or live items such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, maintains condition and supports the best body colour. Small, frequent feedings suit the species better than single large portions.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus is an egg-scattering open spawner. In the aquarium, males in breeding condition are more intensely coloured than females and actively court gravid females, which become noticeably plumper. The species does not form pair bonds and shows no territorial behaviour associated with spawning site defence.
Spawning typically takes place over fine-leaved vegetation or synthetic spawning mops. Males display alongside females, and the pair or group scatter eggs among the planting material. There is no parental care; both eggs and newly hatched fry are liable to be eaten by the adults if not separated.
Breeding
Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus has been bred in captivity since at least 1925, making it one of the historically earliest tetras to be reproduced under aquarium conditions, and tank-bred stock is the norm in the trade today. Conditioning adults on live and frozen foods brings females to spawning readiness relatively quickly.
Eggs are scattered adhesively among fine-leaved plants or mops and are not attended by the parents. To raise fry successfully, breeders typically remove the adults after spawning or transfer the egg-laden mops to a separate rearing vessel. At typical aquarium temperatures the eggs hatch within a few days. The fry are small and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. The species is regarded as straightforward to breed and is a good introduction to characid reproduction.
In the aquarium
The yellow tetra is an undemanding, peaceful schooling fish well suited to a community aquarium. It is best kept in groups of six or more, where its social behaviour and the mild competitive display between males are most apparent. A planted aquarium with some open swimming space, subdued to moderate lighting, and soft to moderately hard water at 68–77 °F suits the species well, though it tolerates a fairly wide range of conditions.
It is compatible with other small, peaceful characids, rasboras, small corydoras, and similarly sized community fish. Its modest size — under 2 in — makes it appropriate for tanks from about 23.5 in upward when kept as a small school. Feed a varied diet and carry out regular water changes to maintain colour and breeding condition. Hardy and long-lived for its size, H. bifasciatus rewards basic attentive care with consistent colour and lively, active behaviour.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 04 March 2021. The species has a broad distribution across multiple drainages of southeastern Brazil and does not face any documented range-wide threat at the population level that would warrant a higher category.
Its wide natural range, tolerance of varied water conditions, and long history of aquarium propagation mean that the hobby trade is well supplied with tank-bred stock. No special conservation measures are currently indicated, though habitat degradation of Atlantic Forest stream systems in southeastern Brazil — driven by deforestation, agriculture, and urban expansion — remains a general concern for many small fish endemic to the region.
