Hyphessobrycon brumado is a small, slender characid from the highlands of Bahia state in north-eastern Brazil, collected in the rio Brumado, a tributary of the rio de Contas drainage at elevations approaching 1,000 metres. The species is immediately distinguished by a broad, intense black lateral stripe that runs the full length of the body and extends onto the median rays of the caudal fin — a bold signal set against a yellow-orange ground colour that gives displaying males an almost jewel-like quality. Described by Zanata and Camelier in 2010, it has attracted modest but growing attention in the specialist hobby as a hardy, adaptable fish from a relatively understudied upland stream fauna.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon brumado was described by Angela M. Zanata and Priscila Camelier in 2010, with the type locality given as the rio Brumado, a tributary of the rio de Contas drainage in Bahia state, north-eastern Brazil. The valid name as recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is Hyphessobrycon brumado Zanata & Camelier, 2010; the species remains placed in Hyphessobrycon and the authority is not parenthesised.

Hyphessobrycon is among the largest and most taxonomically challenging genera in the family Characidae, containing well over 150 valid species and serving as a receptacle for many small-bodied tetras of uncertain interrelationship. The genus is defined partly by the presence of a humeral spot or lateral stripe, the presence of an adipose fin, and features of the dentition, though it is widely acknowledged to be non-monophyletic pending broader molecular revision. H. brumado is placed there on the basis of shared morphological characters and its overall body plan, and Zanata and Camelier's 2010 description provided a diagnosis distinguishing it from congeners on the basis of its distinctive lateral pigmentation and meristic counts.

The specific epithet brumado is a toponym referring directly to the rio Brumado, the stream in which the type material was collected. 'Brumado' is a Portuguese adjective meaning foggy or misty, descriptive of the cool, highland atmosphere of this part of the Chapada Diamantina region of Bahia.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon brumado is a slender, elongated tetra reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1 in. The body form is typical of stream-adapted Hyphessobrycon: laterally compressed but noticeably more elongate than the deep-bodied rosy tetra group, with a streamlined profile suited to moderately flowing water. An adipose fin is present.

The most diagnostic external feature is the broad, intense black lateral stripe. Beginning on or near the snout, it runs the full length of the body and continues onto the median rays of the caudal fin, making the stripe conspicuous at a glance and distinguishing this species from superficially similar congeners whose stripes terminate at the caudal peduncle or only faintly enter the fin. The ground colour of the body is yellow-orange, warmer in males and particularly in dominant or displaying individuals. Sexual dimorphism is moderate: males tend toward more pronounced colouration, with the black stripe reported as more intense, while females are somewhat less vivid and may be deeper-bodied when ripe.

Habitat

The type locality of H. brumado is the rio Brumado, a tributary of the rio de Contas drainage in Bahia state, north-eastern Brazil, part of the hydrological system of the Chapada Diamantina highlands. Collection sites recorded for the species range between approximately 971 and 1,157 ft above sea level — elevations unusually high for Hyphessobrycon and representative of the cooler, oxygenated upland stream fauna of north-eastern Brazil's interior.

Stream habitat at these altitudes in the region typically features moderate to fast flow over rocky and sandy substrates with riparian gallery forest providing overhead cover, leaf litter accumulation, and inputs of terrestrial invertebrates. Aquatic vegetation is present but may not be dense in faster-flowing reaches. Water temperature at such elevations is measurably cooler than lowland streams in the same state, and the chemistry of the rio de Contas drainage in this area tends toward soft to moderately mineralised water, consistent with the crystalline basement and Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of the Chapada Diamantina region.

The restricted, upland distribution of H. brumado makes it a habitat specialist by circumstance: the combination of the rio Brumado itself and the broader rio de Contas upper drainage defines essentially the entire known range of the species.

Feeding

Gut content analysis and field observations reported for H. brumado indicate an omnivorous diet that takes advantage of the full range of resources available in an upland stream. Wild specimens have been found to consume filamentous algae and plant material alongside aquatic invertebrates, including larvae of dipterans (midges and related flies) and trichopterans (caddisflies), as well as terrestrial invertebrates such as ants and spiders that fall into the water from riparian vegetation.

This dietary breadth is characteristic of small characids in dynamic highland streams, where resource availability shifts seasonally and the fish must exploit both aquatic and terrestrial prey. In the aquarium, H. brumado accepts the standard range of foods offered to tetras: good-quality flake and micropellets, frozen foods including bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp, and live small invertebrates. Including plant-derived foods — spirulina-based flake or blanched vegetable matter — reflects the algivorous component of the wild diet and helps maintain the ground colour.

Mating

Like the great majority of Hyphessobrycon species, H. brumado is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males are reported to show more intense coloration, particularly a more pronounced black lateral stripe, and the typical tetra pattern of male courtship involves active pursuit of females, lateral displays, and spawning dashes into fine-leaved vegetation or other fibrous substrate.

No detailed field study of courtship behaviour in H. brumado has been published, but observations from captive spawnings are consistent with the typical characid pattern: males court actively in the early morning and compete with one another for access to receptive females, making short parallel runs alongside the female before the pair scatter eggs among plants. As an upland species, the fish may respond to modest reductions in temperature — simulating the cooler, higher-rainfall highland season — as a spawning trigger.

Breeding

Captive breeding of H. brumado follows the standard Hyphessobrycon protocol. Conditioned adults scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or over synthetic spawning mops; the eggs adhere lightly to the spawning medium by short filaments. Adults do not guard eggs or fry and will consume both if given the opportunity, so eggs or the spawning medium should be removed to a separate rearing container once spawning is observed.

At temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius appropriate for this highland species, eggs hatch within roughly 24 to 48 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming after another day or two once the yolk sac is absorbed. First foods should be suitably small: infusoria, paramecia, or commercial liquid fry food in the first days, graduating quickly to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered fry food. The upland origin of the species suggests it should be bred at somewhat cooler temperatures than lowland tetras — the mid-20s rather than the upper 20s — and this cooler approach also tends to improve egg survival and reduce fungal losses.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon brumado is a straightforward tetra for experienced freshwater aquarists seeking a less common species from north-eastern Brazil. Its modest size — under 1.5 in standard length — makes it suitable for aquaria from around 23.5 in upward, though a shoal of six to ten fish is recommended both for the fish's social welfare and to bring out the full intensity of male coloration and the lateral stripe. A planted aquarium with darker substrate and a few areas of shading will set off the yellow-orange and black colouration to best advantage.

The highland origin of the species is the most important husbandry consideration. Temperatures in the range of 68–75 °F are more appropriate than the higher ranges often given for lowland Hyphessobrycon; sustained warmth above 79 °F is likely to cause stress over time. Water should be soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral, in keeping with the headwater chemistry of the rio de Contas drainage. Good filtration and regular water changes support the elevated oxygen demands typical of stream-adapted fish. H. brumado is peaceful and mixes well with other small, similarly sized South American characids, rasboras, or small catfishes that share its preference for cooler water.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon brumado is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The Least Concern assessment reflects that the species is not currently considered to face sufficiently severe threats to qualify for a threatened category, though the restricted range in the upland rio de Contas drainage of Bahia is a structural vulnerability.

The Chapada Diamantina region of Bahia, while partly protected within a national park of the same name, faces pressures from agriculture, water abstraction for irrigation, and altered hydrology in stream systems outside the park boundary. Upland stream fish with limited ranges — like H. brumado, which is known only from the rio Brumado and adjacent parts of the rio de Contas system — are inherently at risk from localised catchment changes because there is no adjacent, unaffected population to buffer a local decline. No specific conservation programme for the species has been documented, and it is likely maintained in the hobby in small numbers by specialist breeders interested in the characid fauna of north-eastern Brazil.
