Hyphessobrycon cachimbensis was described by Haroldo Travassos in 1964, with a type locality at the Rio Cachimbo on the Serra do Cachimbo in the state of Pará, Brazil. The specific epithet directly references this type locality. The species was redescribed by Marinho and Dagosta in 2024, a work that clarified its diagnostic features and confirmed its distribution within the upper tributaries of the rio Xingu and rio Tapajós basins — the Serra do Cachimbo acting as a drainage divide between these two major Amazonian river systems.
The genus Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest in the family Characidae, encompassing a diverse assemblage of small tetras distributed across tropical and subtropical South America and into Central America. The valid name Hyphessobrycon cachimbensis Travassos, 1964 is listed in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). No subspecies are recognised. The 2024 redescription by Marinho and Dagosta, published in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology, provides the most recent diagnostic account of the species.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon cachimbensis is a small characid reaching approximately 1 in standard length (SL); FishBase records a maximum of 2 in SL for the species. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, following the general Hyphessobrycon body plan.
The most prominent feature is a longitudinal dark stripe running along the midlateral surface of the body, which is listed as a key diagnostic character. In males, the anal-fin base has a convex profile, a reliable meristic feature identified in the 2024 redescription. Otherwise the colour pattern is typical of small stream tetras in this genus: a pale to silvery ground colour with the dark lateral stripe providing the main contrast. Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle, expressed primarily through the anal-fin shape in males rather than through dramatic colour differences.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Serra do Cachimbo, a sandstone plateau in southern Pará, Brazil, and is known from the headwater streams of both the rio Xingu and the rio Tapajós basins in this region. This is a biologically significant area where two major drainages originate, separated by the plateau's watershed divide.
Water conditions recorded at the type locality area are soft and slightly acidic, consistent with the nutrient-poor, blackwater and clearwater streams typical of Amazonian upland habitats: temperature approximately 73 °F and pH around 6.5. The fish inhabits freshwater streams as a benthopelagic species, likely sheltering among riparian vegetation and substrates typical of headwater forest streams. Data on depth range and further microhabitat details remain sparse.
Feeding
Hyphessobrycon cachimbensis is described as omnivorous, consuming small invertebrates and plant matter — a dietary generalism typical of the genus and of small characids inhabiting Amazonian headwaters.
In the wild, small stream tetras in this guild take aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other invertebrates from the water column and benthos, supplemented by periphyton and plant material. In captivity, the species can be expected to accept a range of small prepared foods including quality micro-pellets and fine flake, with live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and micro-worms serving as nutritional supplements that support condition and colour.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon cachimbensis is described as a rainy-season spawner that engages in group spawning, a pattern consistent with the egg-scattering reproductive strategy widespread in the genus. In the wild, rising water levels during the rainy season likely trigger spawning aggregations in vegetated shallows or flooded marginal areas.
As in other Hyphessobrycon, spawning is presumed to involve open egg-scattering without pair bond formation. Males with the convex anal-fin profile characteristic of the species may engage in competitive displays or pursuit behaviour during courtship, though detailed field observations are not available. The species shows no parental care, and eggs are left to develop unattended after release.
Breeding
Based on the confirmed rainy-season, group-spawning biology, H. cachimbensis likely follows the broadly typical Hyphessobrycon breeding template: eggs are scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, are adhesive, and receive no parental attention. Adults will consume their own eggs if not separated.
In captivity, conditioning a group in soft, slightly acidic water at around 73–77 °F with a period of simulated rainfall or water change is expected to encourage spawning activity. Fine-leaved plants, Java moss, or synthetic spawning mops provide oviposition sites. Eggs should be removed to a separate rearing container promptly; newly hatched fry will require very small first foods. Dedicated captive-breeding data for this species are sparse in the aquarium literature.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon cachimbensis is not regularly seen in the hobby; it is an obscure headwater endemic without an established common name or broad trade presence. Aquarists who obtain it should replicate the soft, slightly acidic, cool conditions of its Serra do Cachimbo origin: water temperature around 72–77 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, and low to moderate hardness.
As a small characid it is expected to be peaceful and best kept in a group of six or more to encourage natural shoaling behaviour and reduce individual stress. A well-planted aquarium with subdued lighting, dark substrate, and gentle filtration suits the species' likely preference for calm, tannin-stained headwater streams. Tankmates should be small, similarly soft-water species. The dark lateral stripe shows up well against pale sandy or leaf-litter substrates. Given its endemism and limited distribution, captive stock may be rare and should be maintained with conservation breeding in mind.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Hyphessobrycon cachimbensis as Least Concern, based on an assessment completed on 7 November 2018. No major threats were identified at the time of that assessment.
Nonetheless, the species' narrow endemism to the Serra do Cachimbo headwaters — a geographically restricted upland plateau in Pará, Brazil — warrants ongoing monitoring. Headwater endemic fishes of the Brazilian uplands can be vulnerable to habitat modification from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and changes to hydrology even when current populations appear stable. The Serra do Cachimbo region is within the broader Amazonian biome, where land-use pressures continue to intensify. The 2024 redescription by Marinho and Dagosta helps consolidate the taxonomic and distributional foundation needed for future conservation assessments.
