Hyphessobrycon catableptus is a diminutive tetra from the Essequibo River basin of Guyana, reaching no more than 0.5 in total length and known chiefly from the single post-larval holotype collected by Mary Durbin in 1909. Its extreme smallness and the fragmentary nature of the type material have kept it an obscure footnote in Hyphessobrycon systematics for over a century, and it remains Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List as of the 2020 assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon catableptus was originally described by M. L. Durbin in 1909 under the name Dermatocheir catablepta, with the type locality given as the Essequibo River drainage, Guyana. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authority for valid names) records the current valid binomial as Hyphessobrycon catableptus (Durbin, 1909); the parenthetical authority reflects its transfer from the original placement. The description rests on a single post-larval holotype, which imposes significant constraints on what can be known with certainty about adult morphology and meristics.

The genus Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest and most diverse in the family Characidae, encompassing several hundred species distributed across tropical and subtropical South America and ranging into Central America. Species limits within the genus have shifted repeatedly as phylogenetic work has refined Characidae — the broader family — and H. catableptus has attracted little revisionary attention owing to the scarcity of material. Its generic placement in Hyphessobrycon is currently accepted but should be regarded as provisional until additional specimens are studied.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon catableptus is an exceptionally small fish, reaching a reported maximum of 0.5 in total length — placing it among the smallest members of its large genus. The description is based on a post-larval specimen, which means that details of adult body shape, fin-ray counts, and coloration in life are not well documented in the primary literature.

As with other small Hyphessobrycon, the general body plan is presumed to follow the typical tetra bauplan: laterally compressed, fusiform to slightly deep-bodied, with a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins. Pigmentation patterns and any distinctive markings that might aid identification have not been formally described for adults. The species' data-sparse status means that much of its morphology remains to be characterised from fresh material.

Habitat

The known type locality is the Essequibo River drainage of Guyana, one of the major river systems of the Guiana Shield in northern South America. The Essequibo drains a broad catchment of tropical lowland rainforest and flows northward to the Atlantic coast. FishBase classifies H. catableptus as benthopelagic and restricted to freshwater.

Specific microhabitat data for this species are not available in the published literature reviewed for this account, reflecting the fact that no specimens are known beyond the original holotype. By analogy with other small Hyphessobrycon from Guiana Shield drainages, the species likely inhabits clear, soft, acidic blackwater or whitewater tributaries associated with the forested interior, but this inference cannot be confirmed without additional field collections. Water parameters recorded for similar Hyphessobrycon from comparable drainages typically span pH 5.0–7.5 and temperatures in the range of 73–82 °F.

Feeding

No dietary data specific to Hyphessobrycon catableptus have been published, consistent with the species being known only from a single larval type specimen. Members of the genus Hyphessobrycon are broadly omnivorous micro-predators in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — as well as algal and plant material opportunistically encountered in the water column and at the surface.

In any aquarium context (were captive specimens available), a diet of fine live and frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, Daphnia, and crushed flake would be appropriate for a fish of this size. Given its 0.5 in maximum length, only very small food items would be suitable.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in Hyphessobrycon catableptus has not been observed or described in either the wild or captivity, as no live specimens have been reported beyond the type. Hyphessobrycon as a genus are egg-scattering open spawners: males pursue females, and pairs or groups scatter small, non-adhesive to slightly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, mosses, or leaf litter without providing any subsequent parental care.

If H. catableptus conforms to the typical genus pattern — as is assumed by analogy — courtship would involve the male closely shadowing the female in short parallel runs over the spawning substrate, fertilising eggs as they are released. The complete absence of observational data means that any species-specific courtship traits remain unknown.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Hyphessobrycon catableptus are known, and none could be expected given the absence of live material. The original description was made from a post-larval holotype, so egg, larval, and juvenile developmental details are not available.

Based on the broad pattern for congeners of similar size, eggs would likely be small, slightly adhesive, and scattered among fine vegetation, hatching within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures; fry would be tiny at hatching and require infusoria-scale first foods. Without actual specimens this remains inference from genus-level analogy rather than documented observation for this species.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon catableptus is not known to be maintained in the aquarium hobby, and no captive population is recorded. Its maximum length of 0.5 in would make it one of the smallest tetras available to aquarists were it to enter the trade, and its care requirements would presumably align with those of other diminutive, soft-water Hyphessobrycon: a well-established, heavily planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water, gentle filtration, and similarly sized, non-competitive tankmates.

The practical obstacles to keeping this species are significant: it has not been collected since the original type was obtained, it may be genuinely rare or difficult to encounter in the field, and its extreme small size would make collection, transport, and husbandry demanding. Any future hobbyist interest in the species would depend first on re-discovery in the wild and the establishment of a captive-bred line.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon catableptus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 20 December 2020 (IUCN version 3.1). The Data Deficient designation reflects not a low level of concern but an absence of sufficient information to make a reliable determination of extinction risk — a consequence of the species being known only from a single historic type specimen.

The Essequibo River basin in Guyana is broadly considered to be among the better-preserved large river systems in South America, owing to relatively low population density and limited large-scale industrial development compared to other parts of the continent. However, the species' population status, distribution, and ecological requirements are essentially unknown, making it impossible to assess whether or to what degree it faces threats. Targeted surveys of the Essequibo drainage using modern methods would be the most useful step toward understanding whether this taxon persists and what conservation measures, if any, might be relevant.
