Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon clavatus was described by A. Zarski in 2015 in the journal Vertebrate Zoology (volume 65, issue 3, pages 287–296), from material collected in Peru. The valid name as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hyphessobrycon clavatus Zarske, 2015. It belongs to the large genus Hyphessobrycon within the family Characidae, the most species-rich family in the order Characiformes and one of the most diverse groups of freshwater fishes in South America.
The genus Hyphessobrycon encompasses a broad assemblage of small, often colourful tetras, and sorting out species-level boundaries within it has occupied ichthyologists for decades. H. clavatus was placed in the genus on the basis of its overall meristic and morphological profile; within the genus it does not appear to belong to any of the well-known species groups typical of the hobby, and little formal comparative work placing it in a species complex has appeared in the accessible literature since its description.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon clavatus is a small, laterally compressed characid with a distinctly high, short body — the body depth fitting approximately 3.04 times into standard length — giving it the club-shaped or fusiform outline that inspired its name. Maximum recorded size is 1 in standard length. Counts include 31 scales in the longitudinal series and only 5 pored scales in the lateral line, which is incompletely developed as is typical across much of Hyphessobrycon. Mean anal fin ray count is 19.
The colour pattern is understated: the body carries a diffuse, dark longitudinal band running along the flank, and the humeral spot — a mark just behind the head common in many Hyphessobrycon — is weakly developed or essentially absent. The overall impression is a plain, silvery-bodied small tetra without the vivid reds, blacks, or iridescent patches that characterise many congeners.
Sexual dimorphism is present and taxonomically informative. Males possess small hooks on the first six or seven divided anal fin rays, a feature shared by numerous Hyphessobrycon males and functionally linked to spawning behaviour. In addition, the ventral fins of males reach beyond the origin of the anal fin, whereas in females they do not. These characters allow sex determination in adult specimens without dissection.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon clavatus is known from Peru, South America, with its type locality associated with the Río Formiga region. It is classified as a tropical freshwater species occupying pelagic (midwater) zones, consistent with the open-water shoaling behaviour typical of small Hyphessobrycon.
Detailed ecological data — substrate type, riparian vegetation, water chemistry at collection sites, altitude, or seasonal hydrology — have not been published in sources available for this account. The broader Peruvian Amazon basin encompasses an enormous diversity of aquatic habitats ranging from fast-flowing Andean foothill streams to slow, blackwater igapó and várzea floodplain channels; without additional field data, assigning H. clavatus to a specific habitat type beyond 'tropical freshwater' would be speculative.
Feeding
No specific dietary studies have been published for Hyphessobrycon clavatus. Based on its small size, midwater lifestyle, and membership in Hyphessobrycon — a genus whose species are overwhelmingly opportunistic micropredators — the natural diet almost certainly includes small invertebrates such as microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and zooplankton, supplemented opportunistically with organic particles.
In aquarium conditions, small Hyphessobrycon generally accept high-quality micro-pellets and fine flake, frozen foods such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and baby brine shrimp, and live equivalents. Offering a varied diet rather than relying solely on dried foods is advisable for long-term health and colour maintenance, though the species' plain colouration means the diet-colour relationship visible in many tetras is less prominent here.
Mating
No published accounts of mating behaviour specific to Hyphessobrycon clavatus have been located. The species is expected to follow the generalist pattern characteristic of the genus: egg-scattering open spawning in which males court females with lateral displays, driving them into fine-leaved vegetation or other spawning substrates. The presence of anal fin hooks in males is consistent with the spawning clasp described in many characids, in which hooks may help the male maintain position alongside the female during the brief spawning embrace.
Males in the genus frequently become more intensely coloured and active in the presence of rival males, and courtship in group settings — with several males competing for spawning access — is typical. No information on seasonality, triggering cues, or courtship-specific colouration is available for this species.
Breeding
Hyphessobrycon clavatus has not been documented as bred in captivity in any source available for this account. Applying the standard Hyphessobrycon model: spawning would be expected to occur over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small adhesive eggs deposited in multiple small batches rather than a single large clutch. The fry of small Hyphessobrycon are typically tiny at hatching and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, progressing to nauplii of Artemia and finely powdered dry foods. Until captive breeding attempts with H. clavatus are documented, these details remain extrapolations from closely related taxa.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon clavatus is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade as of the time of writing; no confirmed aquarium imports or captive strains have been documented in hobbyist literature. As a shoaling midwater characid, it would be expected to require the same broad conditions as other small Peruvian Hyphessobrycon: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the 73–81 °F range, good filtration, and a school of at least six individuals to express natural behaviour and minimise stress.
Its small size (under 1.5 in) and presumed peaceful temperament would make it compatible with other diminutive, non-aggressive tetras, small rasboras, and corydoras in a well-planted aquarium. The plain colouration — a diffuse lateral band on a silvery body — means it lacks the visual impact of hobby-popular congeners, which likely explains its scarcity in trade. Any keeper who does obtain specimens would be working largely without a published husbandry record to draw on.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon clavatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no official threat category. The species is known from Peru but its range extent, population size, and any pressures it may face from habitat loss, pollution, or collecting have not been evaluated.
As a recently described, trade-absent species from the Peruvian Amazon region, it falls into a large category of newly named small characids whose conservation baseline remains essentially undocumented. The broader Peruvian Amazon faces ongoing habitat degradation from deforestation, agriculture, mining, and hydroelectric development, all of which affect freshwater fish communities. Without range data, population estimates, or systematic surveys, a meaningful threat assessment for H. clavatus cannot be made from available sources.
