Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon coelestinus was described by George S. Myers in 1929 (in Eigenmann & Myers, 1929), based on material from Lagoa Bonita, a lake that drains into the Rio São Bartolomeu in what is now the Distrito Federal of Brazil. The type locality thus anchors the species firmly to the upper São Bartolomeu drainage, a headwater system of the Paraná basin on the central Brazilian plateau.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon coelestinus Myers, 1929. The genus Hyphessobrycon belongs to the subfamily Hyphessobryconinae within the family Characidae. EtyFish places this species in Acestrorhamphidae in some classifications that split out the American characid tetras, but the top-level family designation used by the primary ichthyological checklists for this group is Characidae.
Morphology
H. coelestinus is a small, slender tetra reaching a maximum of 1.5 in standard length, placing it among the smaller members of an already small-bodied genus. As its specific epithet suggests, living individuals display a bluish-silvery lateral coloration — a pale, sky-blue sheen over the flanks, presumably complemented by a dark lateral streak that is typical of many Hyphessobrycon species.
Detailed meristic and morphometric data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature; it has received little aquaristic coverage. The body form is the compressed, moderately deep tetra profile common to the genus, with a forked caudal fin and the small adipose fin characteristic of characids. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described in the sources reviewed, though the slight abdominal fullness of ripe females seen in related species is plausible.
Habitat
The species is endemic to headwater streams of the São Bartolomeu basin in the Distrito Federal and Goiás, Brazil, at elevations typical of the Cerrado plateau. These are gallery-forest streams — narrow, shaded channels running through riparian woodland — with slow or gentle flow, gravel, log, and leaf-litter substrates, and clear to lightly tannin-stained water.
Water chemistry recorded at collection localities is remarkably dilute: conductivity ranging from only 2.9 to 5.5 µS/cm, pH 5.30–6.25, dissolved oxygen 7.20–10.27 mg/L, and temperature 68–72 °F. These are among the softest, most oligotrophic conditions on record for any Hyphessobrycon species, reflecting the ancient, weathered soils of the Brazilian Shield. The low conductivity and acidic pH are ecological constraints that define the species and inform what captive water chemistry would need to replicate.
The IUCN estimates an extent of occurrence of approximately 186 mi² with three known locations, making this one of the most geographically restricted tetras on the continent.
Feeding
IUCN assessors describe H. coelestinus as omnivorous with an invertivore tendency — a diet weighted toward small aquatic invertebrates (insect larvae, microcrustaceans) supplemented with organic plant material and detritus gleaned from the stream substrate and water column. This is consistent with the feeding ecology of small headwater Hyphessobrycon generally.
No aquarium feeding records appear in the sources reviewed. By analogy with congeners, the species would accept small live and frozen foods (Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, Cyclops, micro-worms) as well as appropriately sized dry foods in captivity, though its specialisation to extremely soft, acidic water suggests it may be sensitive in ways that limit its aquaristic tractability.
Mating
No behavioural observations of courtship or mating have been published for H. coelestinus in the sources available. As a member of Hyphessobrycon, it is expected to follow the egg-scattering, open-spawning strategy of the genus: males pursue females, and eggs are scattered among fine-leaved aquatic plants or deposited over the substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs clinging briefly to vegetation before the adults disperse.
There is no indication of parental care in any Hyphessobrycon species, and none is expected here. The soft, acidic conditions of its native streams suggest that breeding stimulus — if captive spawning were ever attempted — would likely involve very soft, warm water and conditioning on live foods.
Breeding
Hyphessobrycon coelestinus has not been bred in captivity in any documented case found in the sources reviewed, and it appears to be effectively absent from the ornamental fish trade. Captive breeding of this species therefore remains an unexplored area.
By extrapolation from closely related species, spawning would be expected to involve egg scattering over fine-leaved plants (Java moss, spawning mops) in soft, acidic water, with the adults removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Eggs in related small Hyphessobrycon typically hatch in 24–36 hours at tropical temperatures; fry would require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, graduating to nauplii. The species' extreme sensitivity to water chemistry — conductivity below 6 µS/cm in the wild — would pose a significant practical challenge to captive husbandry.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon coelestinus is effectively absent from the aquarium hobby. FishBase records no aquarium maintenance data for the species, and it does not appear in mainstream hobbyist literature or trade catalogues. Its combination of a highly restricted natural range, Endangered conservation status, and extreme water-chemistry specialisation (conductivity under 6 µS/cm, pH 5.3–6.3, cool temperatures of 68–72 °F) makes it both difficult to source legally and demanding to maintain.
Any hobbyist acquiring this species through legitimate, captive-bred channels would need to replicate very soft, slightly acidic, cool water with minimal dissolved solids — conditions more typical of a blackwater or Cerrado-stream biotope setup than standard community aquarium conditions. Small, peaceful tankmates adapted to the same chemistry would be required. Given its rarity and conservation status, the priority for this species lies with in-situ conservation rather than ornamental collection.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon coelestinus is assessed as Endangered (EN) under IUCN criterion B1ab(iii) — assessed 7 November 2018 and published 2022. The assessment records an extent of occurrence of approximately 186 mi² across three locations within the São Bartolomeu basin in the Distrito Federal and Goiás, Brazil. The primary threats are urban sprawl and agricultural expansion causing habitat loss and fragmentation; the Distrito Federal is one of the most rapidly urbanising regions of Brazil, and gallery-forest streams in this catchment have been cleared, channelled, and polluted at a high rate.
The species qualifies for Endangered status because its already small range is continuing to decline in habitat quality — specifically, the condition of stream habitats as gallery forest is cleared for urban and agricultural use. With only three known locations and a total range smaller than metropolitan Brasília, the population has almost no buffer against further degradation. There are no known captive populations or active conservation breeding programmes. The most important actions identified are protection of remaining gallery-forest riparian zones within its range and monitoring of known stream populations.
