Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon compressus was originally described by Seth Eugene Meek in 1904, with the type locality given as El Hule in the Río Papaloapam basin of Oaxaca, Mexico. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Hyphessobrycon compressus (Meek, 1904), with the parenthetical authority indicating the original description was placed in a different genus. The species is the nominal type of the genus Hyphessobrycon, making it the anchor point for the entire genus-level name.
A synonym, H. compressus milleri Durbin, was described in 1908 from Los Amates, Guatemala (the description is associated with work by Eigenmann), and this name is now treated as a junior synonym. Phylogenetic work noted by Seriously Fish places H. compressus closer to the 'rosy tetra' clade — the cluster of species including H. eques, H. pulchripinnis, and H. socolofi — than to many other members of Hyphessobrycon, a reminder that the genus in its current circumscription is almost certainly not monophyletic. The name Hyphessobrycon milleri is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
The Mayan Tetra is a small, strongly laterally compressed characid, reaching a maximum of about 1.5 in total length (males/unsexed) according to FishBase, with standard lengths in the range of roughly 0.5–1.5 in recorded across surveyed specimens. The body is deep relative to its length, a form reflected in the species name compressus (Latin: compressed).
Colouration is subdued by the standards of more celebrated tetras. The body is silvery with a faint bluish or yellowish tint, and the fins are largely hyaline. Males develop darker, more intensified colouration during the nuptial period. The fish lacks the bold lateral stripe or vivid reds of its showier relatives, but its proportions — deep body, large eye, and neat fin arrangement — are characteristic of the genus.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon compressus is native to southern Mexico (states of Veracruz, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, and Quintana Roo), Guatemala, and Belize, across the Río Papaloapam basin and adjacent drainages of the Atlantic slope of Central America. The IUCN assessment confirms a broad distribution across multiple countries and numerous subpopulations.
Within that range the species is benthopelagic and occupies a variety of still and slow-flowing freshwater habitats: lagoons, swamps, backwater pools, and quiet river reaches over mud or sand substrates. Seriously Fish also records it from smaller rivers, streams, and temporary freshwater swamps, as well as permanent lakes. Reported water parameters span 68–79 °F (68–79 °F) and pH 6.5–8.0, consistent with the warm, often soft-to-moderately hard lowland waters of the region. It occurs within the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, which provides some degree of formal habitat protection.
Feeding
The Mayan Tetra is a probable opportunistic omnivore. The IUCN assessment characterises it as such based on its habitat use and the general feeding ecology of the group. In the wild it likely takes small aquatic invertebrates, microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and plant or detrital material available in the swampy, productive lowland waters it inhabits.
In the aquarium it should accept standard small-tetra fare without difficulty: quality flake and micro-pellets supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A varied diet supports best condition and natural colouring.
Mating
Like other Hyphessobrycon, H. compressus is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males intensify in colour during the nuptial period, a behavioural cue documented by Seriously Fish; this suggests competition among males and active mate choice, in keeping with the typical pattern of the 'rosy tetra' clade to which this species is phylogenetically close.
Spawning is presumed to occur among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over submerged substrate in the shallower, vegetated margins of swamps and backwaters — the habitat type the species preferentially uses in the wild.
Breeding
Hyphessobrycon compressus has not been extensively documented as a captive-bred species; it is not well established in the ornamental trade, and detailed spawning accounts in the hobby literature are scarce. In practice, breeding can be expected to follow the typical Hyphessobrycon pattern: a conditioned group or pair spawning over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, depositing small adhesive eggs among the vegetation, with the adults offering no further care and needing to be separated from the spawn to prevent egg predation.
Incubation and fry-rearing requirements should be broadly comparable to those of related species: eggs hatching within a few days at tropical temperatures, with the fry requiring infusoria or commercial fry food initially before graduating to nauplii and finely powdered foods. The species' scarcity in the hobby means breeding records remain anecdotal.
In the aquarium
The Mayan Tetra is noted by Seriously Fish as not well known in the ornamental trade, and it rarely appears in general retailers. Hobbyists who do keep it would treat it much as any small Hyphessobrycon: a group of six or more in a well-planted aquarium of 23.5 in or more, soft to moderately hard water across a pH of 6.5–8.0 and temperatures of 68–79 °F (68–79 °F), with peaceful tankmates of similar size.
Its appeal lies principally in its taxonomic significance — it is the type species of one of the largest and most familiar genera of aquarium fish — rather than in spectacular colouration. Hobbyists with an interest in systematics or in assembling a representative collection of Hyphessobrycon will find it a worthwhile, low-maintenance fish that performs best when given a natural, softly lit, well-planted setting that mirrors its swampy Central American home.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Hyphessobrycon compressus as Least Concern (assessed 12 September 2018, published 2019). The assessment notes a widespread distribution across southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, with numerous subpopulations. Population trend is listed as unknown; the IUCN considers that although habitat loss and degradation are possible threats, a population decline meeting the threshold for Vulnerable is unlikely given the broad range.
The species occurs in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, which provides some protected-area coverage. Its tolerance of varied freshwater habitats — including temporary swamps and degraded backwaters — may confer resilience compared to more habitat-specialist fish. It is not a species under immediate threat, though continued monitoring of lowland freshwater systems in the region remains important as agricultural and urban pressures on these habitats grow.
