Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon condotensis was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1913, with the type locality given as the Río Condoto in present-day Colombia. Syntypes (BMNH 1913.10.1.19–21) are deposited at the Natural History Museum, London. The species was later catalogued by Lima et al. (2003) in the reference checklist of freshwater fishes of South and Central America, where it was treated under Genera Incertae Sedis in Characidae — reflecting the then-unresolved phylogenetic position of many small Hyphessobrycon-grade characids.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the valid name as Hyphessobrycon condotensis Regan, 1913. The genus Hyphessobrycon encompasses several hundred species of small New World tetras and is one of the largest and most heterogeneous genera in the family Characidae. Maldonado-Ocampo et al. (2008) confirm the species' presence in the Colombian fauna, placing it in Chocó department alongside other Pacific-slope drainages.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon condotensis is a small fish, reaching a recorded maximum of 1.5 in total length (TL) according to FishBase. Like most members of the genus it is laterally compressed and deep-bodied relative to its length, with the typical characid complement of an adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and a small mouth suited to invertebrate prey.
