Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon dorsalis was described by Zarski in 2014. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name. The original description was based on aquarium specimens of uncertain provenance, but paratypes have been linked to the Rio Caures drainage in the Barcelos region of Amazonas state, Brazil. The IUCN assessment notes that the species is recorded from Pará, Rondônia, and Amazonas states, though the IUCN also flags a need for taxonomic revision and fuller documentation of its true geographic range.
The species belongs to the large, morphologically diverse genus Hyphessobrycon within the family Characidae. The rosy-tetra assemblage — a loosely defined species group sharing a pinkish to reddish body flush and similar proportions — has long challenged systematists because shared colour patterns are difficult to interpret phylogenetically, and species limits within this complex have shifted with successive revisions. H. dorsalis fits broadly within this assemblage and its affinities await more detailed molecular and morphological work.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon dorsalis is a small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for males; hobby sources cite a practical aquarium size of around 1 in. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the typical characid fashion, with the proportions and overall silhouette of a rosy-group Hyphessobrycon. The common name Mini Rosy Tetra reflects both the small size and the pinkish to rosy body colouration characteristic of the group.
Detailed meristic and morphometric data from the original description are not reproduced in the sources available, and a full diagnostic comparison with related species awaits specialist review. Females become noticeably more rounded in the abdomen when gravid, which is the most reliable field indicator of sex. Otherwise the sexes are similar in colour and finnage at non-breeding condition.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon dorsalis is native to the Rio Caures basin in Amazonas, Brazil, within the broader Amazon drainage. The Rio Caures is a blackwater tributary characteristic of the nutrient-poor, highly acidic, tannin-stained river systems of the central Amazon lowlands. Habitat notes from hobbyist sources describe tannin-stained waters with a substrate of twigs and accumulating leaf litter — the dark, slow-moving forest streams typical of the region's igapó and terra firme blackwater environments.

Feeding
Hyphessobrycon dorsalis is an omnivore in the field, as expected for a small characid inhabiting leaf-litter-strewn blackwater streams where the diet likely encompasses microinvertebrates, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and organic particles associated with the decomposing leaf substrate.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide variety of foods. Hobbyist sources note a preference for small live and frozen foods — bloodworms, mosquito larvae, Daphnia, and brine shrimp — alongside quality dry foods such as flakes and micropellets scaled to its small mouth. A diet varied with live or frozen items helps maintain colour intensity and promotes breeding condition. As a benthopelagic species it forages across the middle and lower water column, making it compatible with surface-feeding and bottom-dwelling tankmates with minimal competition at the feeding zone.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon dorsalis is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the reproductive pattern common to the rosy-tetra group and the genus broadly. Males court females with lateral displays, and spawning takes place among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over spawning mops into which the adhesive eggs are scattered. There is no formation of a lasting pair bond and no guarding of eggs or fry by either parent.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle outside of breeding condition, with females distinguished primarily by a fuller, rounder abdomen when gravid. Conditioning the group on live and frozen foods enhances breeding readiness. Because the species is a shoaling fish, keeping a group rather than a pair tends to produce more natural social dynamics and more reliable spawning behaviour.
Breeding
Breeding H. dorsalis follows the pattern typical of small Hyphessobrycon: the pair scatters adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, after which the adults should be removed to prevent predation on the eggs. Hobbyist accounts recommend soft, acidic water for a breeding setup — pH 6.0 to 7.0, low hardness achieved with peat filtration or reverse-osmosis water — mirroring the blackwater conditions of the natural habitat.
Eggs hatch in approximately 24 to 36 hours at typical tropical temperatures, and the fry become free-swimming after roughly five days. First foods should be appropriately small: infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered dry food as the fry grow. Adults can live up to five years under good aquarium conditions.
In the aquarium
The Mini Rosy Tetra is a peaceful, sociable, and undemanding aquarium fish well suited to the community aquarium. Hobbyist sources recommend keeping it in groups of ten or more individuals, as it is a confirmed shoaling species that displays better behaviour and colouration in the security of a proper group. It occupies the middle to upper regions of the water column.
Water conditions should reflect the soft, acidic blackwater of its native habitat: pH 6.0 to 7.0, low general hardness (GH 2 to 12), and a temperature range of 73–82 °F (73 to 82 °F). A well-planted aquarium with subdued lighting, dark substrate, and the addition of dried leaf litter or driftwood to encourage tannin release will show the fish at its best and reduce stress. Its small size makes it compatible with other peaceful nano and small community fish; it should not be kept with species large enough to view it as prey. The species is rated straightforward to maintain and breed, making it accessible to hobbyists who can meet its soft-water preferences.

Hyphessobrycon dorsalis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) for Brazil. The assessment notes the species as widely distributed within Brazil (Pará, Rondônia, and Amazonas states), with no identified major threats at the time of evaluation.
The IUCN assessment does flag that the species was originally described from aquarium specimens of uncertain locality, that only 22 type specimens were examined, and that both the taxonomic status and the true geographic range require further study. FishBase records a high population resilience for the species, with a minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months. The principal conservation actions recommended are additional surveys to establish the range more precisely and taxonomic revision to confirm species limits within the rosy-tetra complex.
