The species belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Hyphessobrycon within the family Characidae, the tetras and their allies.
Hyphessobrycon is one of the most species-rich characid genera, with well over a hundred recognised species distributed across tropical and subtropical South America and Central America. Phylogenetic work has repeatedly shown the genus to be non-monophyletic — a long-standing problem that successive revisions have not fully resolved — and the placement of individual species, including H. duragenys, continues to be reassessed as new molecular and morphological data accumulate.
