Hyphessobrycon ecuadoriensis is a small, peaceful tetra confined to a handful of forest pools and slow tributaries in the Los Ríos Province of western Ecuador — a restricted footprint that has earned it a Near Threatened assessment from the IUCN. Reaching barely 1 in in total length, the Ecuador tetra belongs to the rosy tetra clade of the genus and rewards a well-planted blackwater aquarium with quiet, mid-water schooling behaviour. Its narrow wild range and the agricultural pressures closing in on the Guayas River drainage make it one of the more conservation-relevant small tetras in the ornamental trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon ecuadoriensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Arthur William Henn in 1914, with the type locality recorded as Vinces, a town in Los Ríos Province on the Pacific slope of western Ecuador (approximately 1°33′S, 79°44′W). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon ecuadoriensis Eigenmann & Henn, 1914, and the species has not been moved from Hyphessobrycon under the current taxonomy.

Phylogenetically, H. ecuadoriensis is placed within the so-called rosy tetra clade of Hyphessobrycon — a loose assemblage of small, often pinkish-bodied characids sharing a suite of features examined in Weitzman & Palmer's 1997 revision of the group (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 7(3–4): 209–242). This clade includes such familiar hobbyist species as the rosy tetra (H. rosaceus) and bleeding-heart tetra (H. erythrostigma), and H. ecuadoriensis sits toward the periphery of that group by virtue of its Pacific-slope distribution, which separates it from the predominantly Atlantic-drainage rosy tetras.

Morphology

The Ecuador tetra is a small, slender-bodied characid. FishBase records a maximum total length of 1 in for males and unsexed individuals, and most specimens in the aquarium trade fall in the 1 in range. As is typical for small Hyphessobrycon, the body is laterally compressed and moderately deep, with the characteristic adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal.

Coloration follows the rosy tetra pattern: the body has a translucent silvery-pink to yellowish base, the mid-lateral field often catching a faint iridescent sheen under good lighting. The fins may carry a reddish or hyaline tinge. Sexually mature males tend to be slimmer and somewhat more intensely coloured than females, which show a fuller body profile when ripe. The species lacks the bold black or red fin markings of some Hyphessobrycon relatives, giving it a subtler, more understated appearance well-suited to a densely planted display.

Habitat

In the wild, H. ecuadoriensis is known only from the type locality region near Vinces in Los Ríos Province, western Ecuador, within the Guayas River drainage on the Pacific slope of the Andes. The IUCN assessment places its extent of occurrence at 1,565–8,297 mi², confined to inland wetlands of the lower Guayas system, including rivers, streams, creeks, permanent freshwater marshes, and forest pools.

Reported habitat is characterised by low light, abundant leaf litter, and slow to still water — the classic forest-pool environment of many small Neotropical tetras. Aquarium sources describe water of moderate acidity (pH 5.5–7.0), low to moderate hardness (0–12 °dH), and temperatures of 72–79 °F. The IUCN notes the species is benthopelagic and forms schools of 30–40 individuals in the wild, suggesting it occupies the mid-water column of these calm, shaded pools rather than hugging the substrate.

Feeding

Hyphessobrycon ecuadoriensis is a micro-omnivore in the wild, feeding on the small invertebrates, zooplankton, and organic particles available in forest-pool environments: items such as microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and fine detritus are all likely components of the natural diet.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts micro-flakes and small granules as a staple, greatly benefiting from regular supplementation with frozen or live micro-foods — baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and similar items. Offering varied, small-particle foods helps maintain colour and condition. Given its 1 in maximum size, food selection matters: particle size should be matched to the fish's small mouth to ensure proper nutrition.

Mating

Like other members of the rosy tetra clade, H. ecuadoriensis is an egg-scattering open spawner. Males court females with fin displays and body shimmering typical of small characids; the species does not form pair bonds and offers no parental care. Spawning in captivity is most readily triggered by providing dim lighting, very soft and slightly acidic water, and the presence of fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops into which the adhesive eggs are broadcast.

Keeping a group skewed toward males, or housing several males together, encourages competitive display and increases spawning activity. As with most small Hyphessobrycon, adults will consume their own eggs immediately after spawning, so separating the spawning medium from the adults is essential if the keeper intends to raise fry.

Breeding

Hyphessobrycon ecuadoriensis has been bred in captivity, although it is not among the most frequently traded tetras and dedicated breeding accounts are sparse. The procedure follows the standard small-Hyphessobrycon protocol: condition a small group of well-fed adults in soft, slightly acidic, warm water; introduce them to a dimly lit spawning tank furnished with Java moss, fine-leaved plants, or spawning mops over a bare or mesh-covered bottom; remove the adults once spawning is observed.

Eggs are adhesive and hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at typical breeding temperatures; fry become free-swimming after a further 3–4 days. First foods should be very fine — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is modest, as expected for a species whose adults top out below 1.5 in. No parental care is provided at any stage.

In the aquarium

The Ecuador tetra is a peaceful, schooling mid-water swimmer well-suited to a quiet community aquarium. A group of 8–10 individuals in a tank of 17.5–23.5 in or larger shows the species at its best, with the school moving cohesively and individual fish displaying more confident behaviour than isolated specimens. Tankmates should be similarly sized and non-aggressive; other small schooling tetras, peaceful rasboras, pygmy corydoras, and small livebearers are all suitable companions.

Water chemistry should lean toward the soft, slightly acidic to neutral end of the spectrum (pH 5.5–7.0, hardness 0–12 °dH, temperature 72–79 °F). A heavily planted setup with subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and some tannin-stained water from driftwood or dried leaves most closely replicates the forest-pool habitat and draws out whatever colour the fish carry. The species is reported to have a lifespan of 3–5 years under good aquarium conditions. Because of its restricted wild range and Near Threatened status, sourcing captive-bred individuals is preferable where possible.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Hyphessobrycon ecuadoriensis as Near Threatened (criteria B1b(iii)), assessed on 26 August 2020 and published in 2023. The listing is driven by the species' restricted range within the Guayas River drainage of Pacific-slope Ecuador — an area under mounting pressure from agricultural expansion and associated pollution. The assessment records an extent of occurrence of 1,565–8,297 mi², placing it close to the Vulnerable threshold under criterion B.

Specific threats identified by the assessment include agricultural encroachment reducing the area and quality of forest-pool habitats, water-quality degradation from runoff, and competition and predation from introduced non-native fishes — including Rainbow Trout, Swordtail, Mosquitofish, Guppy, Common Carp, and Tilapia — that have been introduced into the drainage. No species-specific protection measures are currently in place, though the IUCN notes the species' range may partially overlap with the Manglares Churute Ecological Reserve. The species enters the ornamental trade in small volumes; the relatively low commercial pressure is some mitigation, but the fundamental vulnerability of a range-restricted endemic to habitat loss remains.
