Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon eilyos was described by Flávio C.T. Lima and Carlos R.S.F. Moreira in their 2003 paper "Three new species of Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes: Characidae) from the upper rio Araguaia basin, Brazil," published in Neotropical Ichthyology 1(1): 21–33. The species was one of three Hyphessobrycon novelties from the same drainage documented in that single contribution, underscoring how incompletely the ichthyofauna of the upper Araguaia was known at the time.
The genus Hyphessobrycon Durbin, 1908 is one of the largest and most taxonomically unwieldy genera in Characidae, encompassing several hundred species of small tetras distributed across South and Central America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Hyphessobrycon eilyos Lima & Moreira, 2003 as the valid name. The common name "Ely's tetra" used in hobby and database sources is a vernacular rendering of the epithet.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon eilyos is a diminutive tetra, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1 in. Like most small Hyphessobrycon it has the characteristic compressed, roughly oval body form of the genus, with a moderately elevated back and a fairly large eye relative to head size.
Detailed colour data from the original description are not reproduced in the available secondary sources, and the species remains poorly documented in hobby literature relative to more widely traded tetras. In the aquarium, small Hyphessobrycon from clear, tannin-stained Cerrado rivers typically display silvery or lightly pigmented bodies with a dark lateral stripe or blotch and often a humeral spot, though pattern specifics for eilyos should be verified against the primary description or fresh specimens.
Habitat
The species is native to the upper Rio Araguaia basin in the state of Goiás (and likely Mato Grosso), Brazil. The upper Araguaia drains the southern fringe of the Cerrado, Brazil's vast tropical savanna, and its headwater tributaries are characterised by clear to slightly tea-coloured water, sandy and gravelly substrates, and patches of aquatic vegetation, submerged leaf litter, and marginal riparian cover.
Aquadiction's species profile records the habitat as clear waters with gentle currents, sandy substrate, and aquatic vegetation — a description consistent with the backwater and marginal environments many small Hyphessobrycon prefer. Water chemistry reported for the species' range spans pH 5.5–6.5, hardness 1–5 dGH, and temperatures of 79–82 °F, reflecting the warm, soft, slightly acidic conditions typical of Cerrado-margin rivers. FishBase extends the temperature range slightly to 73–82 °F for tropical maintenance.
Feeding
Hyphessobrycon eilyos is considered an omnivore, as is typical for small characins of this genus occupying similar Neotropical habitats. In the wild, micro-invertebrates, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and organic detritus make up the likely diet, supplemented by plant matter and biofilm in vegetated backwaters.
In the aquarium it accepts high-quality dried foods — fine flake and micropellets — as well as frozen or live offerings such as brine shrimp nauplii, Daphnia, and bloodworm. Feeding a varied diet that includes live or frozen foods supports condition and helps bring small, softwater tetras to breeding readiness. Given its small adult size, fine-grade foods or those formulated for nano fish are appropriate.
Mating
Like all members of Hyphessobrycon, H. eilyos is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males are generally slimmer than gravid females and may display intensified colour or fin posturing during courtship, though published behavioural observations for this species specifically are sparse.
Courtship in small Hyphessobrycon typically involves males chasing and displaying to females among fine-leaved vegetation, with spawning occurring in short bursts as the pair or group scatters small adhesive eggs onto plant leaves and fine-textured substrates. No pair bonding occurs, and the spawning act is brief and opportunistic.
Breeding
Hyphessobrycon eilyos has been spawned in the aquarium, though it is not a commonly traded species and documented breeding accounts are limited. The general approach for small softwater Hyphessobrycon applies: a small, dimly lit breeding tank with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops, very soft and slightly acidic water (pH around 5.5–6.5, hardness below 5 dGH), and temperatures in the upper range around 79–82 °F.
Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent them from consuming the adhesive eggs. Incubation typically runs two to three days at warm temperatures, and the fry are very small at hatching, requiring infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. Like other small Hyphessobrycon, fry growth is gradual, and survival depends on pristine water quality and appropriately sized foods in the early weeks.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon eilyos is suited to a softwater nano or planted aquarium kept at pH 5.5–6.5 and temperatures of 79–82 °F. At 1 in adult size, it is genuinely a nano fish and can be maintained comfortably in tanks from around 10 US gal upwards, provided the water chemistry, filtration, and plant cover match the species' requirements. A dark substrate, subdued lighting, tannin from driftwood or dried leaves, and dense planting in the margins will reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
The species should be kept in groups of at least eight to ten individuals: small schooling tetras are more secure and display more naturally when kept in numbers. It is a peaceful fish appropriate for community setups with other small, softwater South American species — pencilfish, dwarf corydoras, apistogrammas, and similarly sized tetras all make compatible companions. It is not widely available in the trade and may require sourcing from specialist dealers or breeders who work with uncommon Araguaia-basin characins.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hyphessobrycon eilyos as Near Threatened (NT) on 7 November 2018, with a population trend recorded as decreasing. The assessment reflects the species' restricted range within the upper Rio Araguaia basin and the ongoing pressures that affect that system, including agricultural conversion of the Cerrado, sedimentation from cattle ranching, and water extraction in the headwaters.
The upper Araguaia catchment sits within a region of Brazil that has experienced among the highest rates of Cerrado deforestation over recent decades. The loss of riparian gallery forest and the increased silt loads that follow degrade the clear, low-nutrient backwaters that species like H. eilyos depend on. While the species is not currently assessed as threatened at the species level, the trajectory of its habitat and the narrowness of its range justify monitoring, and the Near Threatened listing signals that further deterioration of catchment condition could elevate its risk category.
