A small, vividly striped tetra from the western Amazon basin, Hyphessobrycon eschwartzae carries three distinct horizontal bands — orange above, cream in the middle, and black below — across a yellowish-green body not much longer than a thumbnail. Described formally in 2013 and placed in the Heterorhabdus species-group of Hyphessobrycon, it inhabits slow-flowing, darkly stained streams in Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru, where acidic, low-mineral water winds through densely vegetated corridors. It was previously circulated in the hobby as Hyphessobrycon cf. agulha before receiving its own name, honouring the artist Eugenia Schwartz.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon eschwartzae was described by García-Alzate, Román-Valencia, and Ortega in 2013. The species belongs to the Heterorhabdus group within the large genus Hyphessobrycon, a clade characterised by their elongated body, horizontal pigmentation pattern, and association with soft acidic waters across tropical South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Hyphessobrycon eschwartzae García-Alzate, Román-Valencia & Ortega, 2013.

Before it received a formal name the fish was known in the aquarium hobby as Hyphessobrycon cf. agulha, a reference name that linked it loosely to the blood-flag tetra H. agulha of the eastern Amazon. The 2013 description separated it as a distinct species on the basis of coloration and meristic characters, anchoring it firmly in the Heterorhabdus group alongside such well-known tetras as the serpae and bleeding-heart lineages. Hyphessobrycon itself is one of the most species-rich characid genera, with over 150 described species distributed broadly across lowland South America.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon eschwartzae is a small, slender tetra reaching a maximum of around 1–1.5 in standard length. The body is laterally compressed and elongate in the Hyphessobrycon manner, with a relatively pointed snout and a moderately forked tail.

The most arresting feature is the horizontal banding along the flank. Three parallel stripes run the length of the body: an orange-red uppermost stripe, a white to cream mid-lateral band, and a broad black stripe along the lower flank. The overall body ground colour is yellowish-green, and the upper half of the eye is red — a detail shared with several Heterorhabdus-group relatives. Males and females are similar in patterning; females tend to be slightly deeper-bodied when in spawning condition, a common dimorphism among small schooling characids.

Habitat

Hyphessobrycon eschwartzae occurs in the Rio Madre de Dios drainage and neighbouring Amazon-basin tributaries spanning eastern Bolivia, southwestern Brazil, and eastern Peru. This region is characterised by lowland Amazon rainforest cut through with slow-flowing or near-standing streams where leaf litter, overhanging vegetation, and root tangles dominate the aquatic environment.

The species favours acidic, soft, darkly stained black or brown water — the kind of tannin-rich environment produced by decomposing organic matter in low-energy channels. Recorded water parameters from source data indicate temperatures of 72–77 °F, pH 5.0–6.5, and hardness around 3–8 dGH. It is a mid-column schooling fish that relies on dense aquatic vegetation and shaded, structured habitat.

Feeding

Like virtually all small Hyphessobrycon, H. eschwartzae is an omnivore. In the wild it is assumed to take small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — along with algae and fine plant detritus, foraging through the water column and among vegetation in its slow-flowing stream habitat.

In captivity it accepts standard fare for small tetras: quality flake and micro-pellets, frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and Cyclops. Variety in the diet maintains condition and supports breeding; live and frozen foods are particularly useful for bringing fish into spawning readiness. The species shows no unusual dietary requirements.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon eschwartzae is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the typical small-tetra reproductive pattern. Under good conditions, conditioning a group on varied foods brings the fish into spawning readiness, with females becoming noticeably fuller in the abdomen. Males court females with lateral displays, likely emphasising the contrast of the horizontal stripe pattern.

Spawning takes place among fine-leaved aquatic plants or equivalent spawning media. Adhesive eggs are scattered over vegetation and left entirely unattended; both parents will consume eggs and fry if not removed. The species does not appear to have strongly seasonal breeding triggers in captivity.

Breeding

Breeding H. eschwartzae follows the standard small-tetra protocol. A separate, well-planted or mop-equipped breeding vessel with soft, acidic water — pH 5.5–6.5, low hardness, temperature in the mid-20s Celsius — provides the best results. Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops give the fish a substrate over which to scatter their small adhesive eggs.

After spawning, parents should be removed promptly to prevent egg predation. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–30 hours under warm conditions. The newly free-swimming fry are tiny and require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to micro-worm and freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Water quality must be carefully maintained in the rearing vessel as fry are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite. Growth is gradual, and juvenile coloration develops over several weeks.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon eschwartzae is a peaceful mid-water schooling tetra best kept in groups of ten or more individuals, which both provides the fish with security and produces the most visually striking display of their horizontal banding. A minimum aquarium of around 15 US gal is appropriate for a school. The tank should be densely planted along the sides and back with fine-leaved species, leaving open swimming lanes in the centre; dim or diffused lighting, dark substrate, and the addition of dried leaf litter or driftwood all enhance the fish's colours and reduce shyness.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' black-water origins: soft, acidic conditions with pH 5.0–6.5 and temperature 72–77 °F suit it best. Hard or alkaline water is not appropriate for long-term health. Suitable tankmates are other small, non-aggressive South American species that tolerate similar soft-acid water — small pencilfish, other Hyphessobrycon, Corydoras from soft-water drainages, and dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma. The species is too small and timid to be housed with anything predatory or boisterous.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon eschwartzae has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its distribution across parts of Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru within the Rio Madre de Dios and broader Amazon drainages gives it a wider range than many narrow-endemic small tetras, which is a moderate buffer against localised habitat loss.

Nonetheless, the species' dependence on intact, slow-flowing black-water forest streams means it is broadly susceptible to the pressures bearing on Amazonian lowland habitats: deforestation, agricultural runoff, and sedimentation that alter water chemistry and remove the shaded, vegetation-rich corridors the fish requires. No targeted conservation measures are documented; the best approach for aquarists is to source captive-bred stock where available and to maintain the species under water conditions that support long-term health and reproduction.
