Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon frankei was formally described by Zarski and Géry in 1997, in a paper published in German under the title 'Beschreibung eines neuen Salmlers aus dem Einzugsgebiet des Río Ucayali in Peru' ('Description of a new tetra from the Rio Ucayali basin in Peru'). The type locality lies within the Ucayali River basin of Peru, placing the species within the diverse Amazonian ichthyofauna of the upper Amazon drainage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Hyphessobrycon frankei Zarski & Géry, 1997.
Hyphessobrycon is a large, diverse genus within the family Characidae, the characins, and encompasses many of the small, colourful tetras popular in the aquarium hobby. The genus has long been acknowledged as paraphyletic, and ongoing phylogenetic revisions continue to reorganise its constituent species, but H. frankei is currently retained in Hyphessobrycon. The species was documented in the Lima et al. (2003) Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, which remains a standard reference for Neotropical ichthyology.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon frankei reaches approximately 1.5 in standard length, making it a small tetra in the lower size range of the genus. Like other members of Hyphessobrycon it is a laterally compressed, spindle-shaped fish with the characteristic large eye and terminal mouth of a mid-water forager. Specific colour pattern details are sparse in the available literature, but the species belongs to a group of Peruvian Hyphessobrycon associated with soft, acidic forest streams, where transparency and subdued lateral markings are common.
Data on detailed meristics and colouration beyond the original description are limited in accessible sources, which is not unusual for species described from remote Amazonian localities and rarely exported to the ornamental trade. Aquarists working with live specimens report a typical small Hyphessobrycon appearance, with the body condition and colour intensity strongly influenced by water quality.
Habitat
The species is known from tributaries of the Ucayali River basin in Peru, a major western tributary of the Amazon. In the Ucayali system these smaller forest streams are typically slow-flowing to almost still, heavily shaded by riparian and flooded forest, and characterised by extraordinarily soft and acidic water. Leaf litter accumulates on stream beds, releasing humic and tannic acids that stain the water brown, lower the pH, and suppress conductivity to near-distilled levels.
Reported water parameters for the species' natural habitat include temperatures in the range of 72–81 °F and a pH of 3.5–5.0 — values that place it among the more extreme blackwater tetras. Dense aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, and drifts of fallen leaves provide shelter and feeding habitat. These conditions are typical of terra firme forest streams across western Amazonia, where seasonal flooding and dry-season isolation shape fish community structure.
Feeding
Hyphessobrycon frankei is an omnivore, consistent with the broad feeding strategy typical of small Hyphessobrycon species. In its natural habitat it likely exploits a range of small invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and other zooplankton — along with organic detritus and fine plant matter associated with leaf-litter environments.
In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, small brine shrimp, micro-worms, and bloodworm, as well as good-quality dry foods including fine-grade flake and micropellets. A varied diet with regular live or frozen components supports both health and colouration. Because natural foraging occurs at low light intensities among leaf litter, feeding in a dimly lit tank with ample cover likely reduces stress and encourages more natural behaviour.
Mating
Like other small Hyphessobrycon, H. frankei is an egg-scattering species with no parental care. Courtship in the genus typically involves the male pursuing the female through fine-leaved vegetation or over spawning substrate, with brief parallel-swimming and contact spawning bouts during which small numbers of adhesive eggs are released and fertilised.
Dim lighting and the presence of fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops appear to encourage spawning activity, reflecting the low-light, heavily vegetated conditions of the species' natural habitat. As with most characins, both sexes will readily consume freshly laid eggs if left together in a spawning tank, so egg removal is standard practice for breeders aiming to raise a cohort.
Breeding
Hyphessobrycon frankei is an egg-scatterer that spawns among fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, depositing small adhesive eggs that cling to plant material. Breeding requires very soft, acidic water that closely mimics natural conditions — attempting to spawn the species in hard or alkaline water is unlikely to succeed and may prevent egg development even if spawning occurs. Water temperature in the 75–79 °F range and pH below 6.0 are appropriate starting conditions.
The adults show no parental care and will eat their eggs and fry; breeders typically condition a group, move them to a dedicated spawning vessel over fine-leaved plants or mops, and remove the adults after spawning. Eggs hatch in several days at spawning temperatures, and the tiny fry require infusoria or similar micro-foods initially before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Good water quality and very gentle filtration — a sponge filter is preferred over power filtration that can injure or disperse fry — are essential through the early rearing phase.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon frankei is a fish for the specialist rather than the general community aquarium. Its requirement for very soft, highly acidic water (pH 3.5–5.0) places it outside the comfort zone of most standard community setups and demands dedicated preparation: reverse-osmosis or rainwater, careful acidification, and the use of botanicals such as dried leaves, alder cones, or peat filtration to replicate blackwater conditions. The species rewards the effort with natural behaviour in a well-designed Amazonian biotope.
A group of six or more is recommended, as small tetras kept singly or in pairs tend to be shy and inactive. Tankmates, if any, must share the same extreme water parameter requirements — other blackwater Hyphessobrycon, small apistogrammas, or pencilfish from Amazonian forest streams are appropriate choices. Bright lighting should be avoided; a heavily planted or botanical tank with dim, diffuse illumination and a dark substrate allows the fish to settle and display more confidently. Because the species is seldom commercially available, sourcing specimens may require contact with specialist breeders or rare-fish importers.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon frankei is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 23 April 2014. The IUCN assigns it high population resilience, with a population doubling time estimated at less than 15 months, and a low fishing vulnerability score of 10 out of 100. The Ucayali River basin supports an exceptionally diverse fish fauna, and while the species is associated with forest-stream habitats that face broader deforestation pressure across Amazonian Peru, no population-level threat has been identified that would elevate it above Least Concern at the time of assessment.
As with many narrowly distributed Amazonian tetras, the longer-term conservation outlook depends in large part on the integrity of the riparian and flooded-forest habitats of the Ucayali drainage. Deforestation, agricultural run-off, and changes to stream hydrology from land-use change are ongoing regional pressures. The species' restricted trade presence means collection pressure is minimal, and it is not a significant commodity in the ornamental fishery.
