Hyphessobrycon griemi is a small, peaceable characid from the eastern coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil — the coastal streams and rivers running from São Paulo state south into northern Santa Catarina. Reaching only about 1 in, it is a shoaling fish of shaded, slow-moving waters lined with dense vegetation. Long popular with aquarists under the names Griem's tetra and Goldspotted tetra, it was described by Hoedeman in 1957 and named in honour of Karl Griem, the German aquarium dealer and collector responsible for introducing it to the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon griemi was described by J. J. Hoedeman in 1957 in the German aquarium journal Aquarien- und Terrarien-Zeitschrift, where the original paper titled the species as 'eine farbenprachtige Neuheit der bifasciatus-Gruppe aus Gojas' — placing it within the bifasciatus species group of Hyphessobrycon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon griemi Hoedeman, 1957.

Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest genera of characid fishes, encompassing well over 100 species of small tetras distributed across tropical and subtropical South America. The bifasciatus group, to which H. griemi belongs, contains several species characterised by two dark lateral stripes and similar body form; disentangling species limits within this complex has been a recurring subject of revisionary ichthyology. H. griemi's placement within Hyphessobrycon is stable under current usage, and the Catalog of Fishes does not record any synonyms that have been applied to this species.

Morphology

Griem's tetra is a compact, laterally compressed fish reaching a maximum of approximately 1 in standard length according to FishBase, though some sources record individuals up to around 1.5 in in well-maintained aquariums. Like other members of the bifasciatus group it has the typical small-tetra body plan: a relatively deep, oval profile, large eyes, a small terminal mouth, and an adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins.

The colouration is the species' defining feature. The flanks carry a bold, dark lateral stripe running from behind the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin, overlaid on a silvery to pale gold background. A reflective gold or brassy shoulder spot behind the operculum gives rise to one of its common names, 'Goldspotted tetra'. The fins are generally clear to lightly tinted. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: females are visibly rounder in the abdomen, particularly when gravid, while males are slightly smaller and more slender in body profile.

Habitat

In the wild, Hyphessobrycon griemi inhabits the eastern coastal river systems of southeastern Brazil, primarily drainages in the states of São Paulo and northern Santa Catarina. These are predominantly slow-moving streams and rivers with dense bankside and submerged vegetation, sandy or muddy substrates, and heavy shading from overhanging riparian foliage.

The water in these lowland coastal drainages tends to be soft and slightly acidic to neutral. FishBase records the species' water parameters as 73–82 °F, pH 5.8–7.8, and hardness 5–25 dH, reflecting the variability across its range. The shaded, vegetation-rich environment typical of its native habitat is echoed in optimal aquarium conditions: the species is most at ease in planted tanks with subdued or dappled light.

Feeding

Hyphessobrycon griemi is an omnivore. In nature it takes small invertebrates including worms, crustaceans, and insect larvae, along with plant matter and organic debris from the substrate and water column — the generalist diet typical of small characids in vegetated lowland streams.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of foods without difficulty. High-quality fine flake and small micropellets form a workable staple, but the fish benefits markedly from regular supplementation with live or frozen small invertebrates: bloodworms, brine shrimp, Daphnia, and white mosquito larvae are all taken readily. Feeding small amounts once or twice daily rather than a single large meal matches the species' natural feeding behaviour and reduces waste.

Mating

Griem's tetra is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Courtship is typical for small Hyphessobrycon species: males pursue females through vegetation, displaying intensified colour and fin extension to signal fitness. Spawning activity is most pronounced in the morning hours and is stimulated by the combination of mature, well-conditioned fish and appropriate water conditions.

In a group setting, males compete for access to females, and the presence of rival males appears to intensify display behaviour. Keeping a small shoal rather than an isolated pair tends to produce more consistent spawning attempts. The species shows no territorial aggression outside of brief spawning chases and remains peaceful with tankmates at all times.

Breeding

Breeding H. griemi in captivity is straightforward once the fish are properly conditioned. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at around 79 °F, combined with fine-leaved plants or a synthetic spawning mop, replicates the essential conditions of the species' native habitat. A conditioning diet of live or frozen foods brings adults into spawning condition within a week or two.

A pair or small group will scatter adhesive eggs among fine vegetation; a productive spawning may yield up to around 300 eggs. The eggs are light-sensitive and hatch in approximately 24 hours at 79 °F; the fry become free-swimming within a few days thereafter. Because adults will eat eggs immediately, breeders typically move the adults out after spawning, or use a fine mesh over the tank bottom to protect eggs. First foods for fry are infusoria or commercial fry preparations, graduating to microworms and newly hatched brine shrimp as the fish grow. Lifespan in captivity is reported as up to around five years under good conditions, though two to three years is more typical.

In the aquarium

Griem's tetra is an undemanding and rewarding aquarium fish well suited to smaller planted setups. A minimum tank volume of around 10 US gal accommodates a proper shoal; the species is best kept in groups of six or more, as individuals kept in smaller numbers are notably shyer and less active. A planted tank with some open mid-water swimming space, a dark substrate, and subdued or dappled lighting brings out the species' natural colours and reduces stress.

Water chemistry should fall within soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral parameters: pH 5.8–7.8, hardness up to around 18 °dH, and temperature 72–82 °F. The species is peaceful with all similarly sized tankmates and mixes well with other small tetras, small rasboras, pencilfish, and peaceful bottom-dwellers such as corydoras. It is entirely safe with fine-leaved plants. Maintenance is straightforward: regular partial water changes, stable water chemistry, and a varied diet are the main requirements for long-term success.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon griemi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 7 November 2018. The species has a reasonably broad distribution across the eastern coastal drainages of São Paulo and northern Santa Catarina in Brazil, and no specific population-level threats have been identified that would qualify it for a higher threat category at the time of assessment.

The eastern coastal Atlantic Forest drainages of Brazil as a whole face ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion, urban development, riparian deforestation, and water extraction, all of which degrade the slow-moving, vegetation-rich streams that H. griemi and many other small characids depend on. While the species itself is not currently considered at risk, the broader habitat context is one of long-term decline. In the aquarium hobby, Griem's tetra has been in culture for decades and is bred routinely in captivity, making wild collection pressure on this species minimal.
