Deceptively simple in description — a slim tetra with a black band and a white stripe above it — the black neon tetra is in practice one of the most elegantly marked small characids in the hobby. The iridescent white-to-yellow stripe runs from the eye to the tail along the upper edge of a deep black lateral band, and in good light the stripe takes on a greenish-gold sheen that earns the fish repeated double-takes. Native to the Paraguay River basin of central Brazil, it was described by the prolific French-Swiss ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1961 and named in honour of Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod, the encyclopaedic figure whose tropical-fish publishing empire introduced the hobby to hundreds of species.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi was described by Jacques Géry in 1961. The type locality is Coxim on the Rio Taquari, a tributary of the upper Rio Paraguai basin in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi Géry, 1961, with the authority unparenthesised because the species has remained in Hyphessobrycon since its original description.

Hyphessobrycon is a large, heterogeneous genus of small characids — sometimes called the 'tetras' in the broad sense — distributed widely across South and Central America. The genus has been repeatedly revised and several of its lineages may eventually be broken out into separate genera, but H. herbertaxelrodi has not been subject to such treatment and the name remains stable. It belongs to the 'black neon' assemblage of species that share the basic dark-band/pale-stripe colour pattern, and it is entirely distinct from the true neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi), despite the common name it carries.

The species epithet is a patronym: herbertaxelrodi compresses the name of Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod (1927–2017), the American tropical-fish publisher and ichthyologist whose TFH Publications produced the reference books that defined mid-twentieth-century fishkeeping. Géry named the fish for Axelrod in recognition of the latter's contributions to making tropical-fish knowledge accessible, and the honour proved apt: the black neon tetra became a staple of the very hobby that Axelrod helped to popularise.

Morphology

The black neon tetra is a small, laterally compressed characid reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length (SL) in wild specimens, with aquarium individuals typically ranging up to about 1–1.5 in SL. The body is slender and elongate relative to many Hyphessobrycon, with a rounded snout and the typical adipose fin of the family.

Coloration is the defining feature. A broad, deep black lateral band runs from behind the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin, occupying roughly the lower half of the body depth. Immediately above this band lies a narrower stripe that is white to pale yellow anteriorly and takes on a vivid greenish-gold iridescence under side-lighting or fluorescent illumination, the effect of reflective guanine-based pigment cells. The dorsal surface is olive to brownish, and the fins are largely clear. The eye is bright red in the upper quadrant, contrasting strongly with the body's black-and-white scheme.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle in colour but evident in body shape: females are noticeably deeper-bodied than males, particularly when carrying eggs, and typically appear slightly rounder in the belly. Males are slimmer. Neither sex develops the exaggerated finnage or colour differences seen in some other Hyphessobrycon.

Habitat

In the wild, Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi inhabits the upper Paraguay River basin, with records from Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul states in Brazil. The type locality — Coxim on the Rio Taquari — is part of the Pantanal drainage system, and the species is reported from the upper Rio Sepotuba and various minor tributaries, headwater rivers, oxbow lakes, and seasonally inundated floodplain habitats. It is widely distributed within this basin and is considered common where it occurs.

Habitat character is typically soft, slightly acidic to neutral, and tea-coloured to clear: streams and still-water bodies with abundant submersed and emergent vegetation along the margins, where the fish find shelter and foraging opportunities. Reported conditions from the Taquari/Paraguai system span a moderately wide range: temperatures of roughly 68–82 °F (68–82 °F), pH 5.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. The Pantanal region experiences pronounced seasonal flooding, and populations in floodplain habitats move between permanent channels and temporary pools over the annual cycle, exploiting the aquatic invertebrate and plant resources that peak during inundation.

Feeding

Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi is an omnivore, taking a broad range of small food items in the wild. Natural diet includes small aquatic invertebrates such as insect larvae and small crustaceans, as well as plant material including filamentous algae, and probably fallen fruit and terrestrial invertebrates at the water surface in its floodplain habitats. Like most small tetras it is opportunistic, feeding at multiple levels of the water column rather than being strictly benthic or surface-oriented.

In aquaria the species accepts virtually all standard foods without difficulty: good-quality flake and micro-pellets, frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and Cyclops, and live foods when available. Including some live or frozen invertebrate prey on a regular basis brings fish into better colour and breeding condition. The species is not aggressive at feeding and in a community tank may be outcompeted by faster or more assertive fish, so care should be taken that quieter individuals receive adequate nutrition, particularly with small, meaty items.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi is a typical egg-scattering, open-water spawner with no parental care. Males initiate courtship by displaying alongside females, orienting broadside to show the lateral pattern, and pursuing females into fine-leaved vegetation or dense plant growth at the tank margins. The behaviour is not elaborate by characid standards, and spawning can be triggered in a well-maintained aquarium with relatively modest conditioning.

Females ripen visibly: a gravid female becomes noticeably rounder and deeper in the belly than a slim male, making the sexes straightforward to distinguish when the female is ready to spawn. Spawning tends to be most active in the morning hours, with pairs or small groups working through fine-leaved plants releasing eggs that are mildly adhesive and settle among the plant leaves and substrate. No pair bond forms, and both sexes will resume normal shoaling behaviour after spawning.

Breeding

Breeding Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi in captivity is straightforward, and the species has been commercially produced for the hobby for many decades. A dedicated breeding setup uses a small, bare or moss-bottomed tank with a spawning medium of fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops; slightly soft, acidic to neutral water (pH around 6.0–7.0) at 75–79 °F (75–79 °F) suits the species well, though it tolerates a broader range. Adults should be conditioned separately on a varied diet before introduction to the breeding tank.

Eggs are scattered among the plants and sink or adhere to surfaces; they are small and relatively transparent. Embryonic development is comparatively rapid: eggs hatch in approximately 24–30 hours under warm conditions, a timeline documented in controlled studies of this species. The adults are enthusiastic egg-eaters and offer no parental care whatsoever, so spawning adults should be removed immediately after spawning activity ceases, or the eggs transferred to a separate hatching container. Newly hatched fry are tiny and require very fine first foods — infusoria, commercial liquid fry food, or rotifers — before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii and finely powdered dry foods. Growth is steady at warm temperatures with frequent small feedings.

In the aquarium

The black neon tetra is one of the most reliable and attractive community fish available to aquarists. Hardy, peaceful, and visually striking, it suits a wide range of planted community setups and is tolerant enough of water conditions to thrive in most temperate-to-tropical freshwater aquaria. It is at its best in a well-planted tank with some open swimming space, dark substrate, and subdued or side-directed lighting that catches the iridescent stripe — under such conditions the fish display their colours far more vividly than under flat overhead illumination.

Being a shoaling species, black neon tetras should be kept in groups of at least six, and larger groups of ten or more produce more natural schooling behaviour and a more impressive display. A group in a well-planted 23.5 in or larger aquarium, moving in loose synchrony, shows off the repeating pattern of black-and-white stripes to excellent effect. The species mixes well with other small, peaceful fish: other small tetras, Corydoras and small loricariids, peaceful rasboras and danios, and small livebearers. Avoid keeping them with boisterous or nippy species, which stress them and damage their fins.

Water chemistry should reflect their natural range: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 68–81 °F / 68–81 °F). They tolerate harder or slightly more alkaline water in community tanks without distress, though soft, slightly acid conditions are preferred for breeding. Diet is undemanding; a rotation of quality flake, small frozen foods, and occasional live foods keeps them healthy and well-coloured.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed in 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The assessment notes that the species has a stable population within the Paraguay and connected river systems. In Spanish the species is known as Neon-negro in conservation literature.

The species' broad distribution across the upper Paraguay basin, its tolerance of varying habitat conditions including the seasonally dynamic Pantanal landscape, and its status as a commercially abundant ornamental species all contribute to the Least Concern designation. While ornamental collection occurs, the species is extensively tank-bred by commercial producers worldwide, meaning the hobby demand does not translate directly into wild collection pressure to any significant degree.

The Pantanal wetland — the largest tropical wetland ecosystem on Earth and the core of this species' range — faces ongoing pressures from agricultural conversion, soy and cattle production upstream, and altered hydrology, all of which affect the seasonal flood pulse that drives the ecosystem's productivity. These are landscape-level threats to the whole biome rather than species-specific concerns, and at present they have not moved the black neon tetra's status. Continued monitoring of the Paraguay basin's ecological integrity is warranted given the pace of regional land-use change.
