Hyphessobrycon heteresthes is a diminutive characid from the Neotropical region of Brazil, reaching a maximum recorded total length of just 0.5 in. Described by Ulrey in 1894, it belongs to one of the largest genera in the family Characidae — a sprawling assemblage of small tetras distributed across South and Central America. Because it is rarely collected and infrequently encountered in the hobby or in systematic surveys, fundamental aspects of its natural history, including diet, reproduction, and precise distributional range, remain poorly documented. Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon heteresthes was described by Albert Ulrey in 1894, making it one of the earlier members of a genus that had not yet accumulated the enormous species richness it holds today. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al.) records the valid combination as Hyphessobrycon heteresthes (Ulrey, 1894); the parenthetical authority reflects the placement of the species in Hyphessobrycon subsequent to its original description. The type locality is given as Brazil, most likely in the vicinity of the Pará region of the lower Amazon basin — the same general area that produced several related Hyphessobrycon species described by Ulrey around the same period, including H. heterorhabdus (the Flag Tetra).

The species may belong to or be closely associated with the H. heterorhabdus species-group, a cluster of small, flag-patterned tetras from northeastern Brazil whose interrelationships and exact membership have been subject to ongoing systematic revision. Hyphessobrycon as a whole is not currently considered monophyletic, and the genus has been subject to repeated partitioning, synonymisation, and recombination as molecular and morphological work advances. H. heteresthes has not been the subject of a modern morphological or phylogenetic revision based on ample material, and its precise placement within or near the genus remains incompletely resolved.

The specific epithet heteresthes derives from the Greek, suggesting a reference to variation in squamation or body covering; however, the diagnostic characters that distinguish it from close relatives in the field or in collections have not been widely documented outside the original description. The precise rivers, lakes, or drainage systems in which H. heteresthes has been collected are not documented in available sources, and the species is not listed from any specific water body in the literature reviewed here. Its apparent rarity in collections may reflect genuine low abundance, restricted microhabitat, or simply limited collecting effort in its range. No depth, substrate, or vegetation-association data are available.

Feeding

Whether H. heteresthes would prove compatible with those conditions in practice is untested.
