Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus was described by Albert Ulrey in 1894 from specimens collected in Pará, Brazil. The parenthetical authority reflects the species' original placement in a different genus before being transferred to Hyphessobrycon, where Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) now records the valid name. Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, encompassing more than 150 species of small, often brightly striped or pigmented tetras distributed across South and Central America.
The flag tetra has a long hobby history and appears in older aquarium literature under various spellings of heterorhabdus. No synonyms are in common use today. Its placement within Hyphessobrycon is regarded as stable, and the species has not been the subject of recent revisionary work that might alter its generic assignment. The Catalog of Fishes recognises H. heterorhabdus as a valid species distinct from the superficially similar H. luetkenii and allied forms.
Morphology
A compact, laterally compressed tetra, the flag tetra reaches approximately 1.5 in total length. The body is elongate by Hyphessobrycon standards — somewhat more fusiform than the deep-bodied rosy or serpae tetras — and the caudal fin is moderately forked. Overall colouration is a pale yellowish silver, with the lateral patterning providing the distinguishing character.
The species is defined by three horizontal stripes along the flank. The uppermost is a broad dark stripe running from the eye to the caudal peduncle; below it lies a narrower red or reddish-gold stripe; and beneath that a black stripe completes the arrangement. Together these bands produce the flag-like appearance that gives the fish its common name. The adipose fin is present, as in most characids. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: females are noticeably deeper-bodied and slightly larger than males, a difference that becomes most pronounced when females are carrying eggs.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus is native to the lower Amazon River basin, with the type locality in the state of Pará, Brazil; records also extend to Maranhão and to Colombia. Within this range the species inhabits small forest streams known in Brazil as igarapés — shaded, slow-moving or nearly still channels beneath the Amazonian canopy. These streams are characterised by clear but tea-coloured water, stained dark by humic acids and tannins leaching from submerged leaf litter and decaying wood. Substrates are typically soft mud or fine sand, overlaid with a deep accumulation of fallen leaves and branches.
Water chemistry in these habitats is strongly acidic and very soft, with pH frequently below 6 and negligible mineral hardness. Water temperatures in Pará igarapés range across seasons but are broadly warm, broadly within the range of 73–82 °F. The dim, filtered light, dense leaf litter, and structural complexity of submerged roots and branches characterise the microhabitats the flag tetra occupies in the wild.
Feeding
The flag tetra is an omnivore. In its native igarapés it feeds on small aquatic invertebrates, tiny crustaceans, worms, filamentous algae, and opportunistically on fallen fruit and other organic material washed into the stream. Research on the diet of Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus in eastern Amazon streams has documented spatial and temporal variation in prey composition, consistent with a generalist feeding strategy that shifts with seasonal availability of food items.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts quality dried foods, but shows best condition and colour on a varied diet that includes live or frozen fare. Daphnia, micro-worms, baby brine shrimp, and small bloodworm are readily taken. The fish feeds primarily in the mid-water column and is not an aggressive feeder, so care should be taken that it is not out-competed at mealtimes by faster or more assertive tankmates.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus is an egg-scattering free spawner. In the wild, courtship and spawning take place among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged leaf litter, and root tangles in the igarapés. As in most Hyphessobrycon, there is no pair bond and no parental care: the male pursues the female through the vegetation, and spawning is a brief, vigorous event in which adhesive eggs are scattered over plants or substrate.
Males court females with displays that involve following and circling; the deeper body of the ripe female makes the sexes relatively easy to distinguish during this period. In community aquaria the species will occasionally spawn without deliberate intervention, scattering eggs among plants, though predation by other fish usually prevents fry from developing unless the eggs are removed.
Breeding
Breeding the flag tetra in captivity follows the standard approach for soft-water Hyphessobrycon. A separate breeding tank of 10–15 US gal, filled with very soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, hardness under 4 °dH) and densely planted with fine-leaved plants or furnished with spawning mops, provides the most consistent results. Filtering the water through peat or adding leaf litter helps replicate the humic chemistry of the wild habitat and appears to improve spawning success and egg viability.
A conditioned pair or a small group with more females than males is introduced to the breeding tank in the evening. Spawning typically occurs in the morning, with the female releasing adhesive eggs among the plants. Egg counts are modest — several dozen eggs per spawning event. The parents must be removed promptly after spawning, as they will eat eggs given the opportunity. Eggs hatch in around 24–36 hours at 79–81 °F, and the tiny fry become free-swimming a few days later. First foods of infusoria or commercial liquid fry food should be on hand; newly hatched brine shrimp can be introduced once the fry are large enough to take them.
In the aquarium
The flag tetra is best kept as a school of at least eight to ten individuals in a tank of 15 US gal or more. A densely planted aquarium with areas of open swimming space, a dark substrate, and some surface cover — floating plants or overhanging leaves — recreates something of the dim, sheltered igarapé and encourages natural behaviour and best colouration. Gentle flow and excellent water quality are important; the species is intolerant of poor conditions and of water that is too hard or too alkaline.
Water parameters should target the soft, acidic range the species inhabits in the wild: pH 5.5–7.0 and hardness below 10 °dH, with temperature in the 75–82 °F range. Tannin additions via driftwood, Indian almond leaves, or peat filtration are beneficial and will darken the water to a pale amber. The fish is peaceful and can be kept with other soft-water tetras, dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma, small Corydoras, and other non-aggressive species of similar size. Avoid boisterous or nippy tankmates. Though not the easiest of the small tetras to keep long-term — its requirement for soft, acidic water rules it out for hard-tap-water areas without water treatment — a well-maintained school in appropriate conditions is a striking and lively display.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 4 March 2021. The species has a reasonably broad distribution across the lower Amazon basin — Pará and Maranhão in Brazil, and Colombia — and occupies the extensive igarapé networks of the region, which remain widespread despite deforestation pressures.
The primary conservation concern for the flag tetra, as for many small Amazonian stream fish, is the ongoing degradation of forested watersheds through agricultural expansion, logging, and associated changes to water chemistry and hydrology. Igarapé systems are closely tied to intact canopy cover; forest clearance alters light penetration, increases temperatures, and degrades the leaf-litter inputs that define these habitats. Locally the species may face additional pressure from collection for the ornamental trade, though captive breeding is established in the hobby. Broad-scale assessments suggest populations remain stable, and the LC rating is considered appropriate at present.
