Hyphessobrycon iheringi is a small, poorly known characid described from a single holotype collected at Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará, northeastern Brazil. Known only from that original specimen, the species has never been recorded again with certainty, and taxonomic reviewers have raised the possibility that the holotype may actually represent Serrapinnus piaba — a much more widespread species — making its validity uncertain. The IUCN assessed it as Data Deficient in 2018, unable to reach a conservation conclusion until the underlying taxonomic question is resolved.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon iheringi was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1941, based on a single holotype from Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará state in northeastern Brazil. Fowler placed it in the large and heterogeneous genus Hyphessobrycon, where Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes) maintains it as a valid species, though the name is regarded as tentative pending resolution of its identity.

The species has attracted little subsequent study precisely because only the holotype is known. A critical issue flagged in the IUCN assessment is that the holotype may be a misidentified specimen of Serrapinnus piaba (Lütken, 1875), a widespread northeastern Brazilian characid. If that synonymy holds, H. iheringi would be a junior synonym rather than a distinct taxon. Until morphological or molecular reinvestigation of the type material settles the question, the name is carried on checklists of uncertain Characidae genera — genera incertae sedis within the broader family — rather than confidently assigned to any species group within Hyphessobrycon.

Morphology

FishBase records the maximum standard length as 1.5 in SL, based on the holotype. Beyond this single measurement, morphological data are sparse: no detailed redescription has been published, and the species is not represented in modern museum collections beyond the original type specimen.

As a member of Hyphessobrycon, the species would share the family's characteristic small, laterally compressed, silvery body plan and a single dorsal fin. The generic diagnosis of Hyphessobrycon includes an adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and teeth arranged in one or two rows on each jaw, but specific meristics and colouration for H. iheringi are not available in the published literature accessible from the type description alone.

Habitat

The only documented locality for Hyphessobrycon iheringi is Fortaleza, Ceará, in the semi-arid Caatinga region of northeastern Brazil. Fortaleza sits on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Rio Ceará drainage; freshwater habitats in this region include the coastal rivers, seasonal streams, and reservoirs characteristic of the Caatinga biome, which experiences a pronounced dry season and highly variable water levels.

Because the species is known only from a single historical collection and has not been rediscovered, its actual habitat preferences — substrate, vegetation, depth, and microhabitat type — cannot be characterised with confidence. FishBase describes the species as benthopelagic and subtropical. No water-chemistry data specific to the collection site are recorded.

Feeding

No dietary data exist for Hyphessobrycon iheringi. The species has never been observed alive in the field or kept in aquaria, and the type specimen provides no gut-content information in the available literature.

By analogy with congeners of similar size in the Caatinga and adjacent drainages, it is reasonable to suppose that the species would be a generalist micropredator or omnivore, feeding on small invertebrates, zooplankton, and organic particles — the typical diet of small Hyphessobrycon — but this remains inference rather than documented fact.

Mating

Nothing is known of the mating behaviour of Hyphessobrycon iheringi. The species has never been maintained in captivity and its natural reproductive cycle has not been studied.

Small Hyphessobrycon species are generally egg-scattering open spawners: males court females with lateral displays, and the pair scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, after which adults show no parental care. Whether H. iheringi follows this pattern is an inference from generic biology rather than direct observation.

Breeding

No breeding data are available for Hyphessobrycon iheringi. The species has never been bred in captivity, and its reproductive biology in the wild is entirely undocumented given that no living specimens have been recorded beyond the holotype.

Without established aquarium populations and with the species' very existence as a distinct taxon in doubt, captive breeding is not a realistic conservation option at present. Resolution of its taxonomic status is the prerequisite for any further biological study.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon iheringi is not kept in the aquarium hobby. No living specimens have been collected since the original 1941 holotype, and the species is not in commercial or hobbyist culture.

Should living specimens ever be confirmed and obtained, the general care requirements for small Hyphessobrycon from semi-arid northeastern Brazil — a peaceful, shoaling disposition; warm, neutral to slightly alkaline soft water; and a diet of small live, frozen, and dry foods — would provide a reasonable starting framework, but no specific husbandry recommendations can be made from available data.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hyphessobrycon iheringi as Data Deficient (DD) in November 2018 (assessment date published 2021). The assessors concluded that no conservation evaluation could be reached because of the unresolved taxonomic uncertainty surrounding the holotype: if the specimen proves to be Serrapinnus piaba, then H. iheringi does not exist as a species and has no conservation standing; if it is valid, its restriction to a single historical locality in a heavily modified urban region would likely warrant threatened-category consideration.

The city of Fortaleza has undergone extensive urbanisation since 1941, and the freshwater habitats of the original collection area have been substantially altered or lost. No conservation actions are currently in place, and the species is not documented as occurring in any protected area. The taxonomic question must be resolved — ideally by DNA barcoding or morphological revision of the holotype — before the species' conservation needs can be properly assessed.
