Hyphessobrycon inconstans is a small, little-known characid from South America, described from a specimen attributed to Pará, Brazil, with the true type locality considered uncertain — Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes notes a possible Colombian origin. Described in 1907 as Hemigrammus inconstans by Carl Eigenmann and W.R. Ogle, it was later reassigned to Hyphessobrycon and sits within the subfamily Hyphessobryconinae. The species sees almost no representation in the aquarium hobby and is known chiefly from systematic literature; it is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon inconstans was originally described as Hemigrammus inconstans by Carl H. Eigenmann and W.R. Ogle in 1907, in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum (volume 33, number 1556, page 17). The holotype, USNM 34591, is catalogued from Pará, Brazil, though that type locality is marked as questionable in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, which also notes a possible origin in Colombia. The valid name as accepted by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hyphessobrycon inconstans (Eigenmann & Ogle, 1907); the parenthetical authority reflects the basionym's transfer from Hemigrammus.

The transfer to Hyphessobrycon was formalised by Lima and Malabarba in their contribution to Reis, Kullander, and Ferraris's 2003 checklist of the freshwater fishes of South and Central America. The species belongs to the subfamily Hyphessobryconinae within Characidae and is one of many small, morphologically conservative Hyphessobrycon taxa whose internal relationships have not been resolved by a modern phylogenetic treatment. Data on this species remain sparse; with fewer than 120 occurrence records in GBIF the fish is understudied relative to more commercially important congeners.

The specific epithet inconstans is Latin, meaning 'inconstant' or 'variable', likely reflecting some degree of morphological variability in the type material.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon inconstans is a small fish reaching a reported maximum total length of around 2 in, though this figure is noted by FishBase as questionable. It displays the general body form typical of the genus: a moderately compressed, somewhat elongate characid with the large eyes, complete lateral line, and small adipose fin characteristic of the group.

Detailed meristic and colour descriptions for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. The original 1907 description provides the primary morphological account, and Géry's 1977 Characoids of the World is the most widely cited secondary reference. The specific epithet inconstans suggests the type material showed variable or inconsistent features, which may have contributed to the limited subsequent attention the species has received from both systematists and hobbyists. No photographs of live specimens are widely published.

Habitat

The type locality of Hyphessobrycon inconstans is listed as Pará, Brazil, with the proviso that this may be erroneous and the true origin could be Colombia; Eschmeyer's Catalog records the distribution as South America, with Colombia marked uncertain. Beyond this geographic ambiguity, detailed habitat data for the species in the wild are not available in the accessible literature.

FishBase records the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish, and the water parameters listed — pH 6.5–7.0, hardness 0–7 dH, temperature 72–82 °F — are consistent with lowland Amazonian and Guianan drainages of tropical South America, the region where most Hyphessobrycon species occur. The trophic level of 2.9 (±0.3 S.E.) recorded in FishBase is consistent with a small omnivorous or micro-predatory characid.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary studies exist for Hyphessobrycon inconstans. Based on its trophic level of approximately 2.9 recorded in FishBase, and by analogy with similarly sized congeners, the species is likely a small omnivore or micro-predator taking invertebrates, micro-crustaceans, and small particles of organic material in the water column and near the substrate.

In the uncommon event that this species is kept in captivity, the general feeding approach suited to small Hyphessobrycon — a varied diet of good-quality micro-pellets or crushed flake, supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and micro-worms — would be expected to meet its requirements.

Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour in Hyphessobrycon inconstans are available. As with the great majority of the genus, the species is almost certainly an egg-scatterer that spawns among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over the substrate, without parental care — a reproductive mode shared broadly across the Hyphessobryconinae.

Males in related, well-studied Hyphessobrycon species typically display lateral coloration and fin-spreading during courtship, with spawning triggered or intensified by seasonal environmental cues including rising temperature and water level associated with the onset of rains in Neotropical drainages.

Breeding

No captive breeding reports for Hyphessobrycon inconstans are known from the accessible hobby or scientific literature. By inference from related species in the genus, breeding would involve egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited and abandoned by the adults. Incubation times and fry size are not documented for this species.

The rarity of the species in the trade means that captive-bred stock is essentially unavailable, and husbandry experience is correspondingly absent. Any hobbyist working with this fish would need to apply general Hyphessobrycon breeding methodology — conditioning with live foods, a separate spawning vessel, removal of adults post-spawning, and very fine first foods for the fry.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon inconstans has virtually no presence in the aquarium hobby. It does not appear in trade under any established common name, and published care information is absent from specialist hobby sources. The species is known almost entirely from museum specimens and systematic literature.

Should specimens become available, general Hyphessobrycon care would apply: a well-filtered, planted aquarium, slightly soft to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.0, low hardness), temperature in the 72–81 °F range, and a peaceful community setting with similarly sized tankmates. The reported maximum size of around 2 in places it in the range of the small, schooling Hyphessobrycon that do well in mid-sized aquaria of 23.5 in or more.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon inconstans is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 15 January 2021. FishBase records a high population resilience estimate, with a potential population-doubling time of less than 15 months — a figure consistent with the rapid turnover typical of small characids.

The species' uncertain type locality and limited occurrence data (fewer than 120 GBIF records) mean that the basis for a full population assessment is thin. No specific threats are documented. Its Least Concern status reflects the absence of evidence of decline rather than detailed survey data, and the true range, population size, and ecological requirements of H. inconstans remain poorly understood.
