Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis was described by Flávio C.T. Lima and Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 2001. The type locality is a small creek on Itaparica Island, Bahia, Brazil — the island that gives the species its specific epithet. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis Lima & Costa, 2001; it remains placed in Hyphessobrycon, one of the largest and most species-rich genera in the family Characidae.
Hyphessobrycon is a sprawling, historically catch-all genus that has resisted clean phylogenetic resolution. Many species placed here are of uncertain affinity to one another, and ongoing molecular and morphological work continues to propose rearrangements within the broader characid tetra assemblage. For the purposes of the Catalog of Fishes, however, itaparicensis is treated as a valid species of Hyphessobrycon, and that placement is followed here.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis is a small, slender-bodied tetra with a maximum reported standard length of 1.5 in. Like many members of the genus it displays the general Hyphessobrycon body plan: a moderately compressed, fusiform fish with a relatively deep body profile, a forked tail, and the typical characid adipose fin.
Detailed colour descriptions from field and aquarium observations are sparse in the available literature, but the species is reported to inhabit shallow, often dark-brown or clear streams — conditions common to many Atlantic Forest tetras — which may be reflected in subtle lateral banding or a humeral spot, characters that characterise numerous small Hyphessobrycon species of eastern Brazil. Precise meristic data and a full colour description require reference to the original description.
Habitat
This species is endemic to coastal basins of eastern Brazil, with a known range extending from the Sergipe river system south through Bahia to approximately the Camamu basin. The type locality is a small, shaded creek on Itaparica Island, Bahia — a coastal island in the state of Bahia separated from the mainland by a narrow bay.
Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis inhabits small streams of slow-flowing, clear or dark-brown water that run beneath gallery forest and small patches of Atlantic Forest. These are typically shallow, well-shaded watercourses with no tidal influence. Its occurrence across several distinct coastal drainage systems, rather than a single river basin, is the key factor behind its stable IUCN assessment: the population is frequent and abundant across its range, and no single hydrological event can threaten all populations simultaneously.
Feeding
Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis has a trophic level of approximately 2.9 (±0.3) according to FishBase, placing it as a low-level omnivore. In the wild, small characids of this type typically feed opportunistically on a mix of small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, small terrestrial insects that fall to the water surface — together with algae and organic detritus.
In the aquarium, it should accept the range of foods that suit small tetras generally: good-quality micro-pellets and fine flake as a staple, supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms. As with most small characids, variety in the diet supports good condition and colour.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis is reported to be an oviparous, egg-scattering open spawner — the reproductive strategy shared by the great majority of Hyphessobrycon species. Males court females with lateral displays and chasing behaviour, typically among fine-leaved vegetation where eggs are scattered and allowed to settle or adhere.
The species is a shoaling fish, and as with most tetras of this type spawning behaviour is most readily observed in a group setting. Males may show subtle intensification of colour or more active fin-spreading during courtship. No parental care is given; adults may consume eggs if left in the spawning vessel.
Breeding
As an egg-scattering characid, Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis follows the standard approach used for most small Hyphessobrycon in captivity. A conditioned pair or small group can be spawned over fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or over synthetic spawning mops, into which the adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered. The breeding tank should be dimly lit, and the adults removed once spawning is complete to prevent egg predation.
Fishipedia notes breeding difficulty as moderate. Recommended aquarium water parameters of 72–82 °F and pH 6–7.5 suggest the species tolerates a range that is soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral. Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis is a shoaling species that should be kept in groups of ten or more individuals — Fishipedia recommends a minimum of ten fish. A group this size brings out natural behaviour, reduces inter-individual stress, and makes the fish far more confident and visible in the aquarium. A tank of at least 25 US gal is suggested given the group requirement.
Water chemistry should reflect the species' Atlantic Forest stream origins: soft to moderately hard water (2–15 GH), slightly acidic to neutral pH (6–7.5), and a temperature range of 72–82 °F. A planted tank with some shading, open swimming space in the midwater, and gentle filtration approximates the shaded, slow-moving stream habitat. The species is described as slightly aggressive — common in many small Hyphessobrycon — and tankmates should be chosen accordingly: similarly sized, robust tetras and small bottom-dwellers generally suit it well. Longevity is reported at approximately four years.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment conducted on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022 (v2022-1). The population trend is stable. The species is described as frequent and abundant within its range across coastal drainages of Bahia and Sergipe.
The primary identified threat is residential and commercial development — housing and urbanisation — in the coastal areas of eastern Brazil where this species lives. However, the IUCN assessment considers this threat not significant enough to trigger a threatened listing, given that the species occurs across multiple distinct drainage systems rather than a single basin. That distributional spread provides a meaningful buffer: degradation or loss of habitat in one coastal catchment does not directly affect populations in others. The Atlantic Forest biome, of which these coastal streams are a part, remains under broad pressure from agricultural conversion and urban expansion, and ongoing habitat monitoring for this and other endemic stream fishes remains important.
