Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon khardinae was described by Axel Zarske in 2008 in Vertebrate Zoology (volume 58, number 1), based on material collected from the rio Itaparana near the town of Tapauá in Amazonas state, Brazil, within the rio Purus river system. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon khardinae Zarske, 2008 at the time of description; the species was placed in the 'rosy tetra clade', a grouping that includes several dozen small, laterally compressed characids typically bearing a humeral spot and a dark mid-lateral stripe.
A phylogenomic study published in 2024 in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society by Melo and colleagues re-examined higher-level relationships within Characidae using genome-wide data. That revision reassigned Hyphessobrycon khardinae to the genus Megalamphodus, a name that had long been used for the bleeding-heart tetras and their relatives. FishBase consequently lists the species as Megalamphodus khardinae pending formal uptake by subsequent literature. The taxonomic history of Hyphessobrycon and its satellites is complex, with numerous small genera proposed, synonymised, and revived as molecular data accumulate; the 2024 reassignment is the most recent change for this species.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon khardinae is a small tetra reaching approximately 1 in standard length (SL) based on type-series measurements. The body depth is 2.62–2.93 times into SL and the head length 4.07–4.41 times into SL, giving the fish the relatively deep, compressed profile characteristic of the rosy tetra clade. The lateral-line scale count falls between 31 and 34, a meristic typical of mid-sized Hyphessobrycon.
The most prominent external marking is a triangular humeral spot — a dark blotch immediately behind the operculum — which is a recurrent character in the rosy tetra lineage. A dark mid-lateral band and a caudal peduncle spot are also present, as in related species. Coloration in life follows the rosy-tetra pattern: a pale to pinkish body with reddish overtones and translucent unpaired fins. In keeping with the typical sexual dimorphism of the clade, mature males are expected to develop a hook-like bony hook on the anal-fin rays, though detailed comparative notes on this character for the species are sparse in the available literature.
Habitat
The type locality of Hyphessobrycon khardinae is the rio Itaparana near Tapauá, a small town in Amazonas state, Brazil, within the rio Purus drainage. The Purus is a large, meandering white-water river system flowing through the southwestern Amazon lowlands, characterised by seasonally flooded forests (várzea), oxbow lakes, and slow-flowing side channels with heavily silted, warm, and moderately productive water.
Distribution data compiled in Amazonian biogeographic studies place the species in the middle-to-lower reaches of the Madeira and Purus river systems. No precise habitat parameters — temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen — have been published for the specific collection site, but comparable white-water lowland Amazonian streams typically run warm (79–86 °F), near-neutral to slightly acidic to alkaline depending on local geology, and with moderate conductivity. The region is remote, lightly surveyed for small characids, and no additional populations outside the Purus system have been confirmed.
Feeding
No detailed dietary studies have been published for Hyphessobrycon khardinae specifically. By analogy with closely related rosy tetras of similar body size and habitat, the species is expected to be a generalised micro-predator and opportunistic omnivore in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — as well as terrestrial insects and plant material that fall to the water surface.
In captivity, small Hyphessobrycon of the rosy-tetra clade accept a broad range of prepared and live foods without difficulty. High-quality micro-pellets or finely crushed flake, supplemented with frozen or live Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm, represent a suitable diet. Given the species' small size, appropriately fine-grained foods are important for optimal condition and colour.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon khardinae has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions, and no direct behavioural observations from the wild have been published. Based on the reproductive biology of other rosy-clade Hyphessobrycon, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner that deposits small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged root tangles without providing parental care.
Courting males in the rosy tetra group typically intensify coloration and pursue females through plant cover; spawning occurs in brief chasing sequences with eggs released and fertilised in mid-water before sinking to or adhering to plant surfaces. Both parents ignore the eggs after spawning.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Hyphessobrycon khardinae are documented in the available literature or hobby press. The general breeding approach for small rosy-clade tetras provides a reasonable template: a dedicated spawning aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the range of 79–82 °F, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and a small group of well-conditioned adults. Eggs are adhesive and scattered among vegetation; adults should be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the clutch.
Incubation times for comparable tetras range from 24 to 48 hours at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry appearing two to three days post-hatch. First foods are typically infusoria or commercial fry preparations before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Whether H. khardinae is available in the ornamental trade is unclear; given its remote type locality and apparent absence from published aquarium accounts, wild-caught specimens appear to be extremely rare in the hobby.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon khardinae is not an established aquarium species and does not appear in mainstream hobby literature or trade lists at present. Its small size and rosy-tetra body plan suggest it would be compatible with the husbandry approach suited to other small, peaceful Hyphessobrycon: a well-planted aquarium of at least 23.5 in length, soft to moderately hard water with neutral to slightly acidic pH, temperatures around 79–82 °F, and a school of at least six to eight individuals to support natural behaviour and minimise inter-individual stress.
Should the species enter the trade, appropriate tankmates would be other small, peaceful characids, dwarf cichlids, corydoras catfishes, and small loricariids that share similar water-parameter preferences. The species' remote provenance and limited collection history mean that captive-bred stock is essentially unavailable; any specimens encountered would almost certainly be wild-caught, and their rarity in the trade should be kept in mind.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon khardinae has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). The species is known with certainty only from the rio Itaparana near Tapauá in the rio Purus drainage of Brazil, a single type-locality record in a remote and lightly surveyed region of the western Amazon. Without additional collection records or population surveys, it is impossible to assess range, abundance, or trend.
The rio Purus basin faces ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and small-scale gold mining in upstream reaches, activities that degrade water quality and riparian habitat throughout Amazonian tributaries. Small-bodied, potentially narrow-range characids are among the most vulnerable groups in such environments, as limited dispersal ability can strand isolated populations in degraded microhabitats. Systematic ichthyological survey of the middle Purus tributaries would be needed to determine whether H. khardinae is genuinely localised or has been overlooked across a broader distribution.
