Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon langeanii was described by Flávio C. T. Lima and Cristiano R. Moreira in 2003, in a paper presenting three new Hyphessobrycon species from the upper rio Araguaia basin of Brazil, published in Neotropical Ichthyology volume 1, issue 1. The type specimen is catalogued as MZUSP 75127. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Hyphessobrycon langeanii Lima & Moreira, 2003; because the species was described directly in the genus Hyphessobrycon, no parenthetical authority is required.
The specific epithet langeanii is a patronym honouring the Brazilian ichthyologist Francisco Langeani, recognising his contributions to Neotropical ichthyology. The genus Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest and most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, containing well over a hundred described species of small characids distributed broadly across South and Central America. Within that diversity, H. langeanii belongs to the species-rich assemblage of forms centred on central Brazilian river systems.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon langeanii is a small fish, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in, though most individuals are likely smaller. Like other members of the genus it is laterally compressed, with the typical slender-to-moderately deep Hyphessobrycon body form, a relatively pointed snout, and the large eye characteristic of small characids.
The key diagnostic features that set H. langeanii apart from related species are the presence of a single humeral spot that is round to horizontally oval in outline, a reticulate pattern of dark pigmentation on the body scales that gives the flanks a net-like or latticed appearance, and a caudal-peduncle blotch that is horizontally elongate rather than round. These markings, taken together, are the characters used by Lima and Moreira to separate it from other Araguaia-basin Hyphessobrycon. FishBase records the species as pelagic and tropical, consistent with the open-water, mid-column habits typical of small characids in flowing South American rivers.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon langeanii is endemic to the upper rio Araguaia basin in the state of Goiás or Mato Grosso, Brazil. The rio Araguaia is a major tributary of the rio Tocantins, itself draining into the Amazon system; the upper Araguaia runs through cerrado (tropical savanna) and gallery-forest landscapes in the Brazilian Plateau before descending to the lowland floodplains.
As a freshwater pelagic species, H. langeanii likely inhabits the open water column of main-channel and tributary streams, probably seeking cover among marginal vegetation and flooded grasses during higher-water periods as do most small characids in the region. Precise habitat data from the original description are limited; distribution is recorded by FishBase as Brazil, upper rio Araguaia basin. Water conditions in the upper Araguaia are typically soft and slightly acidic to neutral, reflecting the heavily leached, low-conductivity soils of the cerrado catchment.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of 2.9 for Hyphessobrycon langeanii, which is consistent with an omnivorous to insectivorous diet typical of small Hyphessobrycon species. At that trophic level, the natural diet almost certainly includes small aquatic invertebrates such as midge larvae, microcrustaceans, and other zooplankton, supplemented by terrestrial insects falling onto the surface and algal or detrital material.
In the aquarium, H. langeanii can be expected to accept the range of foods taken readily by congeners: quality small-particle flake and micro-pellets, frozen and live Daphnia, brine shrimp, cyclops, and bloodworm. A varied diet with live or frozen components will maintain condition and natural coloration. Like most small characids it feeds continuously through the day, picking small items from the water column, and benefits from multiple small feedings rather than a single large one.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon langeanii has not been specifically studied in terms of reproductive behaviour, but as a member of Hyphessobrycon it almost certainly follows the egg-scattering reproductive strategy universal in the genus. Males of Hyphessobrycon typically display to females with fin-spreading and body posturing; in many species there is a subtle sexual dimorphism in body depth or fin shape that becomes more apparent during courtship.
Spawning in Hyphessobrycon is generally prompt under the right conditions: a pair or small group introduced into a well-planted spawning tank in soft, slightly warm water will usually spawn within 24–48 hours if well conditioned. The species is not known to form lasting pair bonds, and multiple males may court a single female. No courtship-specific data exist for H. langeanii in particular.
Breeding
Like its congeners, Hyphessobrycon langeanii is presumed to be a typical Hyphessobrycon egg-scatterer: spawning among fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, depositing small, slightly adhesive eggs, with no parental care. Adults will readily consume eggs after spawning, so the eggs or spawning medium should be moved to a separate rearing container as soon as spawning concludes.
Eggs of small Hyphessobrycon species typically hatch within 24–36 hours at tropical temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius. Fry are free-swimming within a day or two of hatching and require very fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry preparations — before moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp. No specific breeding records for H. langeanii appear in the published literature; the above is extrapolated from well-documented congeners under similar conditions.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon langeanii is an unassuming small characid that should suit the general community aquarium for soft-water South American fishes. Like virtually all Hyphessobrycon it does best when kept in a shoal of six or more individuals; a single fish or a very small group will be shy and may not feed confidently. A planted aquarium with dark substrate and some driftwood, maintaining the slightly acidic to neutral, soft conditions of the upper Araguaia, will bring out the best in the species.
Temperament is peaceful. Good tankmates include other small characids, small Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, and small rasboras. The species is unlikely to bother any fish it cannot swallow. Avoid very large, boisterous, or nippy tankmates. FishBase records high resilience in the wild, suggesting it is not unusually delicate in captivity, though as a relatively obscure species it is rarely encountered in the trade and most hobbyists who keep it may have sourced it as an incidental import with similar small characids from the Araguaia–Tocantins drainage.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon langeanii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 07 November 2018 and carried out by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The Least Concern rating reflects a population that, while endemic to the upper rio Araguaia basin, is not currently considered to face threats sufficient to qualify for a threatened category under the IUCN criteria.
Nonetheless, the upper Araguaia basin has experienced significant land-use change associated with cerrado agricultural expansion, and small endemic characids can be affected by habitat degradation, sedimentation, and altered hydrology. The species is not known to be targeted by the ornamental trade to any significant degree, and its relatively high trophic resilience score on FishBase (high resilience) indicates the population can sustain moderate pressure. Monitoring through future IUCN reassessment cycles will be important given ongoing pressures on the Brazilian cerrado biome.
