Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon latus was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1941, in a paper covering a collection of freshwater fishes obtained in eastern Brazil by Dr. Rodolpho von Ihering, published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 93, pages 123–199). The type locality lies in eastern Brazil, in the Rio de Janeiro region. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the name as valid, with Fowler as sole authority; it is not a synonym of any other species, and no subsequent generic reassignment has been applied.
The genus Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest in the family Characidae, encompassing more than 140 described species of small South American tetras. The genus is broadly defined by an elongate to moderately deep body, the presence of an adipose fin, and an incomplete lateral line, though the group is almost certainly paraphyletic as currently constituted and has been the focus of ongoing systematic revision. H. latus sits within this large and taxonomically complex assemblage, and its precise relationships to other species in the genus have not been resolved in published phylogenetic work to date.
Morphology
As a member of Hyphessobrycon, H. latus conforms to the general body plan of the genus: a small, laterally compressed characid with a moderately elongate body, a well-developed adipose fin positioned between the dorsal and caudal fins, and an incomplete lateral line that does not extend to the tail. The species' name latus — Latin for 'broad' or 'wide' — may refer to a relatively broad body form, though detailed morphometric data are not widely published for this species.
Published size data are sparse. On the basis of typical Hyphessobrycon proportions and the general characteristics of the genus as recorded in the literature, the fish is likely to reach a few centimetres in standard length. Coloration in life has not been described in detail in accessible sources; like many Hyphessobrycon it presumably shows silvery flanks with some degree of iridescent sheen and possibly a lateral stripe or spot pattern, but firm colour notes from type or topotype material are not available in the literature reviewed here.
Habitat
The type locality of Hyphessobrycon latus is eastern Brazil, in the Rio de Janeiro region, based on specimens collected by Rodolpho von Ihering. This places the species within the Atlantic Forest river drainages of southeastern Brazil, a region characterised by warm, often soft and slightly acidic to neutral freshwaters draining forested hilly terrain toward the Atlantic coast.
No detailed habitat observations specific to H. latus have been published in readily accessible sources. Given its placement in Hyphessobrycon and its origin in Atlantic Forest streams, the species likely inhabits shallow, vegetated stretches of rivers or streams, possibly with leaf-litter substrate and dappled light — conditions typical of many small characids from this region. Water parameters for Atlantic Forest streams in the Rio de Janeiro area generally range from warm (72–82 °F) to soft and mildly acidic, though some coastal drainages are more neutral. Feeding
No dietary studies specific to Hyphessobrycon latus have been published. The feeding ecology of the species must be inferred from the general biology of the genus and the ecological conditions of the Atlantic Forest drainages it inhabits. The species is presumed to follow the open egg-scattering pattern universal in Hyphessobrycon: males court females with lateral displays and fin-spreading, pursuing them through fine-leaved vegetation or open water until the pair release eggs and milt simultaneously.

Hyphessobrycon latus is not a commonly traded species and is rarely, if ever, available through the mainstream ornamental fish industry. Its care requirements, to the extent they can be inferred from genus-level knowledge, would follow the standard template for small Hyphessobrycon: a well-filtered, planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, temperatures in the range of 72–82 °F, subdued lighting, and a quiet community of similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates.
As a schooling species it should be kept in groups of six or more to allow normal social behaviour and reduce individual stress. A small aquarium of 23.5–31.5 in is likely adequate for a school of adults given the expected size of the fish. Specific husbandry notes from experienced keepers are not available for this species, and any aquarist who obtains specimens would be in a position to contribute useful observations to the literature.

Whether H. latus persists in good numbers, has contracted in range, or is locally threatened is unknown in the absence of systematic surveys. The lack of data itself is a conservation concern: species not surveyed cannot be managed. Future field work in the Atlantic Forest drainages of Rio de Janeiro state would be needed to establish the current status of this species.
