Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon maculicauda was described by the German ichthyologist Ernst Ahl in 1936. The valid name, with Ahl as authority, is maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), the standard reference for valid fish names. The genus Hyphessobrycon Durbin, 1908 is one of the largest in the family Characidae and encompasses a bewildering diversity of small tetras distributed across South and Central America. Generic limits within this group have long been contested, and molecular and morphological revisions continue to move species in and out of Hyphessobrycon and related genera.
The specific epithet maculicauda is Latin in construction — macula (spot) combined with cauda (tail) — and refers to a spot or marking near the caudal peduncle or base of the tail, a feature seen in several members of the genus. The exact type locality for the original description is recorded as central Brazil, though precise geographic data were not always captured for specimens of this era, and the wider distribution of the species in Brazilian river systems remains incompletely mapped.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon maculicauda is a small fish, reaching a maximum total length of approximately 1.5 in, which places it in the smaller range of the genus.
