Hyphessobrycon minimus is a remarkably small characid — at around 1 in total length, it is among the tiniest members of the genus Hyphessobrycon and one of the smallest tetras known to science. Endemic to the Mahaica River basin of coastal Guyana, this little fish occupies blackwater and clear lowland streams where soft, slightly acidic water filters through dense tropical vegetation. It remains one of the least-studied members of its genus, assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, and is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby despite its extraordinary miniature proportions.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon minimus was described by Mary J. Durbin in 1909, with the type locality recorded as Cane Grove Corner in the Mahaica River system of Guyana. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the name as valid with no synonyms or subsequent reclassifications on record; the species has remained within Hyphessobrycon since its original description.

The genus Hyphessobrycon belongs to the family Characidae — a sprawling family of characiform fishes that includes the great majority of species known colloquially as tetras. Hyphessobrycon itself is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family, with well over 150 valid species spread across Central and South America. H. minimus has been treated in studies of genera incertae sedis within Characidae, reflecting the ongoing challenges of resolving phylogenetic relationships among small-bodied characids. Its placement within the genus is stable, however, and it stands as a valid, named taxon with a clear type locality and original description.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon minimus reaches approximately 1 in total length, making it one of the smallest species in its genus and among the most diminutive tetras documented. The overall body plan follows the Hyphessobrycon pattern: a moderately compressed, fusiform to slightly deep-bodied fish with the characteristic adipose fin of characids and a forked tail. At this scale, all features are correspondingly miniaturised.

Detailed morphological data for H. minimus are sparse in the accessible literature, which is common for very small, rarely studied Guianan characids. The coloration in life is not well documented from published sources, and preserved material is the basis for most of what is known taxonomically. As with many small Hyphessobrycon, a lateral stripe or humeral blotch may be present, but without high-quality field photographs or detailed morphological accounts readily available, specific coloration details cannot be reliably reported here.

Habitat

Hyphessobrycon minimus is known from the Mahaica River basin on the Atlantic coast of Guyana — a lowland drainage system flowing through coastal savanna and forest to the south and east of Georgetown. The Mahaica and its tributaries drain terrain that includes both seasonally flooded grasslands and gallery forest, and small characids in this region typically inhabit shallow, slow-moving forest streams and marginal vegetation zones.

FishBase records the species as benthopelagic and lists water parameters of pH 6.0–7.0, hardness 5–15 dH, and temperature 73–81 °F — a moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral profile consistent with the general character of Guianan lowland waters. The Mahaica basin is part of the broader Guyana coastal plain ichthyofaunal zone, a region recognised for its endemic small characids and catfishes. Field data specifically on microhabitat use by H. minimus are not documented in the available sources.

Feeding

FishBase categorises Hyphessobrycon minimus as an omnivore, which is consistent with the general feeding biology of small Hyphessobrycon throughout their range. At 1 in, the mouth is extremely small, and prey items in the wild are likely limited to the finest invertebrates: zooplankton, microcrustaceans, small insect larvae, and possibly algae and organic detritus.

No detailed stomach-content analyses for this species appear in the accessible literature. Specific observations of courtship behaviour in Hyphessobrycon minimus have not been published in the sources available. Based on what is known of Hyphessobrycon generally, H. minimus almost certainly follows the characteristic egg-scattering pattern of the genus: males court females with fin displays, driving them toward fine-leaved plants or other dense substrate where eggs are scattered and fertilised without pair bonding.

No parental care is known in Hyphessobrycon, and H. minimus is not expected to deviate from this pattern. Given its extremely small size, any spawning output would involve correspondingly tiny, adhesive eggs deposited among fine vegetation. Seasonal or water-chemistry cues may trigger spawning in the wild — perhaps coinciding with the Mahaica basin's wet season — but this has not been documented for this species specifically.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Hyphessobrycon minimus is not documented in the readily accessible hobbyist or scientific literature, and the species is effectively absent from the mainstream aquarium trade. By analogy with closely related small Hyphessobrycon, breeding would involve egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, with adhesive eggs requiring removal of the adults to prevent predation.

At 1 in adult size, fry would hatch at a miniature scale requiring infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods as first foods before any larger particle. Incubation times and clutch sizes are undocumented. The species' rarity in captivity means that if it were to be bred, it would represent a notable achievement and the resulting husbandry notes would fill a genuine gap in the literature on this taxon.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon minimus is rarely available in the aquarium hobby and is not a commercially traded species in meaningful numbers. Its extremely small adult size of around 1 in means it would require specialist care: a dedicated nano aquarium with very gentle filtration, similarly miniature tankmates, and food small enough for a mouth at this scale. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water matching the Mahaica basin profile — pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 73–81 °F — would be appropriate.

For aquarists who do encounter this species, a densely planted species tank with dim lighting and fine live or frozen foods (Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, Daphnia nauplii) would best meet its requirements. Given its fragility at this size, mixing with larger fish would be inadvisable. Its hobby status is effectively that of a collector's specimen — of interest primarily to specialists working with miniature Guianan characids. The species' genuine rarity in culture means most husbandry guidance must be extrapolated from related species rather than direct experience.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon minimus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, based on an assessment dated 04 March 2021. The Data Deficient designation reflects an absence of sufficient population data to evaluate extinction risk, not an absence of concern — a species can be Data Deficient and simultaneously genuinely threatened.

The Mahaica River basin on Guyana's Atlantic coast faces pressures common to coastal lowland drainages in South America: agricultural expansion, drainage modification, and land-use change in the coastal plain. Whether H. minimus remains abundant within its type locality or has experienced population decline is not known. Its status as a Guyana Shield endemic recorded from a single river basin, combined with its extreme small size and likely specialised microhabitat requirements, makes it potentially vulnerable to localised disturbance. Formal field surveys targeting this species would be necessary before a more informative Red List category could be assigned.
