Hyphessobrycon moniliger was described by Moreira, Lima, and Costa in 2002 from the Rio Tocantins basin of central Brazil. The original description was published as a new characid fish and is archived on ResearchGate. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) is the authority for the valid name Hyphessobrycon moniliger Moreira, Lima & Costa, 2002.
The genus Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest and most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, the true characids, encompassing many of the small tetras familiar to hobbyists. It has been subject to ongoing revision, and phylogenetic work continues to refine which species belong in the core genus versus allied lineages. H. moniliger sits within the broad Hyphessobrycon assemblage without having been moved to a segregate genus by the currently accepted classification.
The specific epithet moniliger derives from Latin: monile (necklace) and gerere (to bear or carry), together meaning 'necklace-bearer', a reference to a row of dark blotches or spots along the body that suggest a string of beads.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon moniliger is a diminutive tetra, with a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in according to FishBase. Like most members of the genus it is laterally compressed and fusiform, with the moderately deep body typical of small hyphessobrycins. It possesses the characid adipose fin and a well-developed lateral line.
The common name Golden Tetra reflects the warm, golden to brassy body lustre that characterises this species. Habitat
Hyphessobrycon moniliger is a freshwater, pelagic species endemic to the Rio Tocantins basin of central Brazil. The Tocantins is one of Brazil's major river systems, draining a large portion of the central plateau (Planalto Central) before emptying into the lower Amazon estuary at the Baía de Marajó. Its upper and middle reaches flow through cerrado (Brazilian savanna) and transitional forest landscapes characterised by seasonal rainfall, varying water levels, and the clear-to-tea-coloured soft, acidic waters typical of upland Brazilian interior drainages.
Data on the precise microhabitat preferences of H. moniliger remain sparse, but small hyphessobrycin tetras in Tocantins tributaries typically inhabit marginal areas of streams and rivers — among aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, and leaf litter in shaded reaches — where they school in the water column. Water conditions in Tocantins headwater streams are generally warm (around 75–82 °F), soft, and slightly acidic to neutral.
Feeding

By analogy with closely related small hyphessobrycins, courtship is expected to involve active chasing and display by males among vegetation or fine-leaved plants, with females selecting vigorous males. At 1 in maximum length, Hyphessobrycon moniliger is well suited to smaller planted aquaria. Like other small tetras it is a schooling species and should be kept in a group of at least six individuals; a larger group of ten or more will produce more confident, naturally behaved fish that school cohesively in the open water rather than hiding.
Water conditions should reflect the species' Tocantins basin origin: warm (around 75–82 °F), soft to moderately soft, and neutral to slightly acidic. A planted tank with subdued or moderate lighting, dark substrate, and some driftwood or leaf litter replicates the shaded, tannin-influenced streams of central Brazil and brings out the best colouration. Compatible tankmates include other small, peaceful tetras, small rasboras, dwarf corydoras, and similarly sized non-aggressive species. Its diminutive size means very large or boisterous tankmates are unsuitable. This species remains uncommon in the hobby and may require sourcing from specialist breeders or importers.
Conservation
