Hyphessobrycon mutabilis is a small, clear-water tetra from the upper Xingu River basin of Mato Grosso, Brazil, where it inhabits shallow Cerrado streams no more than 31.5 in deep, drifting among dense aquatic vegetation over sandy and muddy substrates. Its specific epithet — Latin for 'changeable' — alludes to a remarkable ability to shift colour rapidly, a trait that makes it at once difficult to pin down on paper and instantly engaging in a biotope aquarium. Reaching around 1 in standard length, it was described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa and Jacques Géry in 1994 and is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon mutabilis was formally described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa and Jacques Géry in 1994, with specimens drawn from the upper Xingu River drainage in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The valid name is listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Hyphessobrycon mutabilis Costa & Géry, 1994, placing it within the large and taxonomically intricate genus Hyphessobrycon.

The genus name traces to the Greek hyphesson, meaning 'lesser' or 'smaller', combined with bryko, 'to bite', reflecting the group's original characterisation relative to the larger, more powerful Brycon. The specific epithet mutabilis is Latin for 'changeable' or 'variable', a direct reference to the fish's documented ability to alter its colour — an unusual trait among small tetras that sets this species apart from most of its Hyphessobrycon relatives. No subspecies are currently recognised.

Morphology

H. mutabilis is a small, laterally compressed characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1 in. The body is typical of the genus: moderately deep, with a straight to gently curved dorsal profile, a well-defined lateral stripe, and the adipose fin present as in virtually all Hyphessobrycon. Meristic counts recorded for the species include 20–23 anal fin rays and 23 vertebrae.

The colour pattern is variable — as the epithet directly states — and the fish can shift between a more subdued, silvery-transparent appearance and a more richly pigmented state, with the degree of colour expression influenced by mood, background colouration, and lighting. A dark lateral stripe runs from the snout toward the caudal peduncle, a feature consistent across the genus, though its intensity fluctuates with the fish's physiological state.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the upper Xingu River basin in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. Within that drainage it occupies shallow, clear-water streams in the Cerrado biome — the vast Brazilian savanna — where it has been recorded at depths of 19.5–31.5 in. Substrate is sandy to muddy, and the sites where it occurs are characterised by dense aquatic vegetation that provides both cover and foraging structure.

The Cerrado streams feeding the upper Xingu tend toward clear, well-oxygenated water with low turbidity, reflecting seasonal rainfall patterns and catchment geology rather than the white-water or black-water chemistry more familiar from the lower Amazon. The species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the shallow water column just above the substrate. Although agriculture and livestock farming pressure Cerrado habitats broadly, the IUCN's 2018 assessment noted that H. mutabilis has been found in altered habitats and that the impact of surrounding land use is not currently assessed as significant for the population.

Feeding

H. mutabilis is omnivorous. The IUCN assessment characterises it as an omnivore, and the shallow, vegetation-rich Cerrado streams it inhabits offer a diet that likely includes small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, plant material, and organic detritus typical of such environments.

In the aquarium the species accepts standard small-tetra fare readily: quality micropellets or finely crushed flake supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, microworms, and newly hatched brine shrimp. Given its diminutive size — under 1 in — food particle size should be kept appropriately small, and live or frozen offerings are particularly effective at encouraging the active foraging behaviour that brings out the species' colour-change trait.

Mating

Like other Hyphessobrycon species, H. mutabilis is an egg-scattering open spawner. Courtship in the genus typically involves a male pursuing a receptive female into fine-leaved vegetation, with the pair making brief, rapid side-by-side runs during which eggs and milt are released simultaneously. No pair bond forms and the adults take no interest in the eggs once shed.

Given the dense aquatic vegetation of its natural habitat, spawning sites in the wild are presumably among submerged plants, where the small, semi-adhesive eggs settle or cling between leaves and stems. Males in good condition may display heightened pigmentation during courtship, consistent with the colour-change capacity the species is named for.

Breeding

Captive breeding follows the standard protocol for small Cerrado and upper-Amazon tetras. A conditioned pair or small group can be transferred to a dedicated breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops; slightly soft, warm water in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius and subdued lighting encourage spawning activity. Eggs are scattered and adhesive, deposited among vegetation, and the adults must be removed promptly as they will eat their own eggs.

At typical incubation temperatures eggs hatch within 24–36 hours and the larvae become free-swimming a few days after that. First foods should be appropriately microscopic — infusoria, paramecia, or commercial liquid fry food — followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. The species remains uncommon in the hobby and there is limited published hobbyist documentation of its breeding, but no unusual difficulties are expected for an experienced small-tetra keeper.

In the aquarium

H. mutabilis is a specialist's fish rather than a mainstream aquarium species. Its small size, clear-water Cerrado origins, and the colour-change trait that makes it interesting in the first place all point toward a biotope or near-biotope setup: a sandy-substrate tank with clear, moderately warm water (approximately 72–79 °F), dense fine-leaved planting, and a dark or natural background that allows the fish's shifting pigmentation to be fully appreciated.

The species is peaceful and shoaling, as expected for a small Hyphessobrycon, and does best in groups of six or more. Tankmates, if any, should be similarly diminutive and non-aggressive — other small Xingu basin tetras or dwarf Corydoras make natural companions. The species is legally permitted for the ornamental trade in Brazil and occasionally appears in specialist lists, but tank-bred stock is sparse and wild-caught specimens may require careful acclimatisation. Availability is low and the species is likely to appeal primarily to biotope aquarists and characin enthusiasts.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon mutabilis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment published in 2022 based on a November 2018 evaluation. The assessment acknowledges the species' restricted range within the upper Xingu basin and the broad agricultural and livestock-farming pressures that characterise Cerrado land use, but notes that the species has been recorded in modified habitats and that the current impact on the population is not assessed as significant.

No formal protected-area coverage or conservation programmes are recorded for the species. It is legally subject to ornamental capture under Brazil's 2012 fisheries framework. Given the ongoing conversion of Cerrado habitat — one of the world's most threatened biomes by area lost — continued monitoring of Xingu headwater stream integrity is warranted, even for a species currently assessed as non-threatened.
