Hyphessobrycon natagaima is a small Colombian tetra, reaching about 2 in standard length, described in 2015 from the Laguna Saldañita wetland system within the upper Magdalena River Basin. It belongs to a cluster of Hyphessobrycon species endemic to the Magdalena drainage and is distinguished from its closest relatives by a dark interrupted lateral stripe that does not reach the caudal spot, a rhomboid caudal-peduncle blotch, and a modest count of pored lateral-line scales. The species inhabits shallow wetland water fringed by riparian grasses and rooted aquatic vegetation — habitat that has come under increasing pressure from agricultural encroachment. It has not been assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon natagaima was formally described in 2015 by Carlos A. García-Alzate, Donald C. Taphorn, César Roman-Valencia, and Francisco Villa-Navarro in the Colombian botanical and zoological journal Caldasia (volume 37, number 1, pages 221–232). The type locality is the upper Magdalena River Basin in Colombia, specifically wetland habitat in the Laguna Saldañita system. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name; the species remains in Hyphessobrycon, one of the largest and most heterogeneous genera in the family Characidae.

Hyphessobrycon natagaima belongs to a group of Hyphessobrycon species endemic to the Magdalena drainage that includes H. poecilioides, H. proteus, and H. ocasoensis. The four species are morphologically similar but differ in scale counts, the extent and continuity of the lateral stripe, the shape of the caudal-peduncle spot, and the presence of fin hooks on males. In H. natagaima the lateral stripe is dark and interrupted rather than continuous, and it does not extend to meet the rhomboid caudal-peduncle spot — a combination that separates it from the other Magdalena congeners. Males possess hooks on all fins, a character shared across much of the genus.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon natagaima is a small, laterally compressed characid reaching approximately 2 in standard length. It shows the generalised Hyphessobrycon body plan: a moderately deep torso, a simple adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin. The lateral-line scale count is low, with 8–12 pored scales along the lateral line, a character the original description uses as a diagnostic feature separating this species from close relatives.

The most distinctive pigmentation feature is a dark, interrupted lateral stripe running along the flank that stops short of the caudal peduncle spot, which is rhomboid in shape rather than circular or diffuse. This combination — interrupted stripe plus rhomboid peduncle spot — is the key visual character for field identification within the Magdalena Hyphessobrycon assemblage. Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern typical for the genus: males develop small hooks on the fin rays, a character associated with spawning behaviour, while females are generally more rotund when gravid.

Habitat

The type series was collected from the Laguna Saldañita wetland, a shallow wetland system in the upper Magdalena River Basin of Colombia. The habitat at the type locality is characterised by riparian grasses fringing the water margin and a mix of rooted and floating aquatic vegetation within the body of the wetland itself. Water is fresh, standing to slow-moving, and the species is described as benthopelagic — actively using both the water column and areas near the bottom but preferring vegetated zones.

The upper Magdalena Basin is a warm-water lowland system; tropical temperatures and soft-to-moderately hard freshwater conditions are typical for this part of Colombia. The Laguna Saldañita wetland in particular has been identified as threatened by agricultural encroachment, which alters marginal vegetation and can substantially degrade the shallow-water microhabitats this species depends on. Whether H. natagaima occurs in additional wetlands or streams within the upper Magdalena drainage is not established from available data.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study for Hyphessobrycon natagaima has been published. The species is a small insectivore-omnivore by guild, consistent with the broad feeding habits documented across Hyphessobrycon. Small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and whatever falls or drifts through the vegetation — almost certainly constitute the bulk of the natural diet in the Laguna Saldañita wetland.

In captivity, congeners of similar size and habitat preference accept fine-particle prepared foods, small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms, and finely crushed flake. A varied diet maintains condition and can enhance colour in Hyphessobrycon generally; the same is expected to apply here. Given the species' rarity in the hobby, direct aquarium feeding observations are essentially unavailable.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon natagaima has not been reported to spawn in captivity in published accounts. Like other members of the genus it is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care. Males of H. natagaima bear hooks on all fins, a trait associated with spawning contact in characids — males use fin hooks to maintain physical proximity to females during the spawning act.

In related Hyphessobrycon species, courtship involves the male displaying alongside and nudging the female into fine-leaved vegetation or other structures where eggs are scattered and fertilised. No parental care follows; adults of many congeners will consume their own eggs if not separated. Breeding is presumed to be triggered by the usual cues — a slight temperature increase, water change, and longer photoperiod — as observed in aquarium-bred relatives.

Breeding

No captive breeding account for Hyphessobrycon natagaima is on record. Based on the biology of close relatives in the genus, eggs would be small, adhesive to semi-adhesive, and scattered among fine-leaved plants or substrate. Incubation times in similar Hyphessobrycon species at tropical temperatures (75–82 °F) are typically 24–48 hours, with fry free-swimming within a few days of hatching.

Should the species become available to aquarists, the approach used for similarly sized Hyphessobrycon — a well-planted spawning tank, a water change with slightly cooler fresh water, removal of adults after spawning, and first foods of infusoria or commercial fry food followed by newly hatched brine shrimp — would serve as a reasonable starting protocol. Data on clutch size, egg appearance, and fry development remain absent from the literature.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon natagaima is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade. The species was described from a threatened wetland and has not been reported from commercial collection or aquarium literature in any substantive way. Seriously Fish, which covers many small Colombian tetras, has no dedicated care guide for this species. It should be considered a scientific specimen rather than a hobby fish at present.

Were it to enter the trade, the care framework for other small upper-Magdalena Hyphessobrycon would apply: a modestly sized planted aquarium, soft to moderately hard tropical freshwater in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, a small shoal of six or more individuals, fine-particle foods, and peaceful tankmates of comparable size. The species' wetland origin suggests it would be comfortable in a heavily planted, subdued-light setup with gentle filtration mimicking slow-moving vegetated water.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon natagaima has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its conservation situation is nonetheless a matter of concern: the type locality, Laguna Saldañita, has been identified in the original species description as a wetland under active threat from agricultural encroachment. Shallow, vegetated wetlands in the Colombian Magdalena lowlands are among the more degraded freshwater habitats in northern South America, reduced by cattle ranching, rice cultivation, and draining for agriculture over recent decades.

A species known only from a single threatened wetland system, with no IUCN assessment and minimal presence in the hobby, depends entirely on the persistence of its type-locality habitat. Formal survey work to establish whether the species occurs elsewhere in the upper Magdalena system, and a Red List assessment to quantify its status, would be the most important conservation actions. Until then, the precautionary inference from its restricted known range and threatened habitat is that it merits concern.
