Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon nicolasi was described by Amalia M. Miquelarena and Hugo L. López in 2010, in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 8, number 1, pages 1–6). The type locality is El Pelado stream, a tributary of the Uruguay River in Entre Ríos Province, Argentina (approximately 32°19'S, 58°14'W). The holotype is catalogued as ILPLA 1808, a female measuring 2 in standard length. Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon nicolasi Miquelarena & López, 2010.
The species belongs to the large, heterogeneous genus Hyphessobrycon within the family Characidae. Miquelarena and López distinguished H. nicolasi from related species by a combination of characters: a well-defined oblique black stripe on each caudal fin lobe, one to three maxillary teeth bearing three to ten cusps, a high anal-fin ray count (27–36 rays), and the presence of bony hooks on dorsal, anal, and caudal fin rays in mature males — a trait seen in many characins and associated with physical contact during spawning. No synonyms are recorded for the species.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon nicolasi is a small, moderately elongate characin reaching 2 in standard length, with most specimens falling between 33.7 and 2 in SL. FishBase records a maximum size of 2 in SL for males and unsexed material. The body form is typical of the genus: laterally compressed, with a rounded snout, a small mouth, and the paired adipose fin common to characins.
The most diagnostic external feature is the caudal fin pattern: each lobe carries a well-defined oblique black stripe, giving the tail a distinctive banded appearance unlike the more common humeral or midlateral spots seen in many congeners. Maxillary teeth number one to three and bear three to ten cusps, and the anal fin is notably long at 27–36 rays. Mature males develop bony hooks along the rays of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins — a tactile feature used during the approach to spawning rather than for display.
Habitat
The type locality and primary known habitat is El Pelado stream, a tributary of the Uruguay River in Entre Ríos Province, northeastern Argentina. Peces Criollos records the habitat as clear water with a rocky and sandy bottom featuring stones, cobbles, and boulders. The stream has distinct zones: shallow, fast-running sections roughly 23.5 in deep, and calmer, deeper reaches approaching 7 ft that support submerged vegetation.
This is a subtropical freshwater environment within the Uruguay River drainage. Co-occurring species recorded at the type locality include Corydoras paleatus, Cheirodon interruptus, Characidium species, and Crenicichla lepidota — a community consistent with the temperate-to-subtropical streams of the Río de la Plata basin. The species appears to be endemic to this region of the Uruguay River basin, and its restricted known range underlies its Endangered listing.
Feeding
No published dietary studies specific to Hyphessobrycon nicolasi are available. Based on the feeding ecology of the genus and the productive invertebrate community of clear rocky Uruguayan streams, the species is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and organisms dislodged from the substrate — along with algal and plant material.
In the aquarium, closely related Hyphessobrycon species accept quality flake and micro-pellet foods supplemented with frozen or live items such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm. A varied diet is likely beneficial for conditioning and colour. Given the limited data, aquarists keeping this species should default to the feeding regimen used for other small, active Hyphessobrycon.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon nicolasi has not been studied in detail under controlled conditions, but all morphological evidence points to the open egg-scattering reproductive strategy characteristic of the genus. The presence of bony hooks on the dorsal, anal, and caudal fin rays of mature males is typical of characins that make brief physical contact or grasp during spawning — a behaviour observed in numerous Hyphessobrycon species — suggesting spawning involves close parallel swimming or a clasping approach among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate.
As in other Hyphessobrycon, males likely develop brighter or more intense markings during breeding condition, and competition among males probably drives selection of spawning sites or females. The habit of spawning among submerged vegetation at the type locality is consistent with the gravelly, vegetated deeper zones recorded there.
Breeding
No captive-breeding records for Hyphessobrycon nicolasi have been published in the accessible literature, and it is seldom if ever available in the ornamental trade. By analogy with the genus, breeding is expected to follow the standard characin pattern: eggs are adhesive and scattered among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, with no parental care and active egg predation by the adults if they are not removed after spawning.
Incubation and fry development data are unavailable; for similarly sized subtropical Hyphessobrycon in cool to moderate temperatures (68–75 °F, approximating Entre Ríos stream conditions), hatching typically occurs within 24–48 hours and fry become free-swimming within a few days. First foods for any successfully bred fry would be infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' Endangered status, captive breeding would be of genuine conservation value, but no programme appears to be underway.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon nicolasi is essentially absent from the ornamental trade; no commercially produced captive stock is known, and wild collection from its already stressed population would be inappropriate given its Endangered status. Any specimens in captivity are likely to be in the hands of specialist Neotropical fish researchers or dedicated hobbyists with conservation intentions.
Should individuals become available through responsible channels, the clear rocky streams of Entre Ríos suggest a preference for clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current and a temperature range reflecting the subtropical Uruguayan climate — cooler than many tropical Hyphessobrycon, likely performing best in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius. A tank with a fine gravel or sandy substrate, smooth stones, and some fine-leaved planting would approximate natural conditions. Like other Hyphessobrycon, the species is assumed to be a shoaling fish best kept in a group. Data on tankmate compatibility and long-term captive husbandry are sparse.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon nicolasi is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2020. The listing reflects the species' highly restricted known distribution — confined to the El Pelado stream and nearby waters of the Uruguay River basin in Entre Ríos Province, Argentina — and its apparent endemism to a very small geographic area.
No specific conservation measures are documented for the species. The Uruguay River basin faces the pressures typical of intensively farmed lowland Argentina: land clearing, agricultural runoff, and altered hydrology. A species known from a single stream tributary has effectively no buffer against local disturbance; the loss or degradation of El Pelado stream would constitute a serious threat to the species' survival. The scientific description itself — published only in 2010 — means population trend data are limited. Targeted surveys to confirm whether the range extends to other tributaries or stretches of the Uruguay basin would be a priority first step for any conservation assessment.
