Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon niger was formally described by Carlos A. García-Alzate, César Román-Valencia, and Saúl Prada-Pedreros in a 2010 paper published in Zootaxa (volume 2349, pages 55–64). The type locality is the River Mojaculo, Vereda Dinamarca, municipality of Acacias, Meta department, Colombia, at approximately 3°53′20.6″N, 93°28′30″W. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon niger García-Alzate, Román-Valencia & Prada-Pedreros, 2010, with no known junior synonyms.
The species belongs to the large, diverse genus Hyphessobrycon within the family Characidae. The genus has been subject to ongoing revision, and higher-level placement of some of its members continues to evolve as molecular phylogenetic work advances; however, the Catalog of Fishes remains the governing authority for the valid name and its placement. No subspecies or colour-form variants have been described.
Morphology
H. niger is a small, slender tetra reaching 1 in standard length. As its specific epithet and common name suggest, the species is notably dark in overall colouration — heavily pigmented with melanophores that give the body, and particularly the flanks, a dusky to blackish cast. Like other Hyphessobrycon it is laterally compressed, with the typical characid body plan: a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin.
Detailed meristic data for this species are sparse in widely accessible sources beyond the original description. The combination of small adult size, strongly dark pigmentation, and the type locality in the Meta llanos provides the key diagnostic features distinguishing it from sympatric congeners described in the same period.
Habitat
The known range of Hyphessobrycon niger lies within the upper Orinoco River basin of Colombia, specifically the Meta department lowlands. The type locality, the River Mojaculo near Acacias, is a small tributary within the llanos — the seasonally flooded savannas that dominate the Colombian and Venezuelan interior.
Small characids in this region typically inhabit shallow, often vegetated stream margins and forest-edge waters. The llanos undergoes dramatic seasonal hydrological variation, with rivers expanding broadly during the wet season and contracting to isolated pools and stream channels during the dry season. Water conditions in such streams tend to be warm and circumneutral to slightly acidic, influenced by the heavy rainfall and lateritic soils of the region, though specific physicochemical data for the type locality of H. niger are not available in widely accessible literature.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Hyphessobrycon niger appears in the accessible literature. By analogy with other small Hyphessobrycon from similar lowland Colombian habitats, the species is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — zooplankton, insect larvae, and terrestrial insects — together with algae and fine plant material.
In the aquarium, congeners of similar size accept standard small-particle prepared foods, frozen and live invertebrates such as Daphnia and brine shrimp nauplii, and finely crushed flake. A varied diet is advisable to maintain condition and encourage natural behaviour, though specific feeding preferences for H. niger are not documented.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon niger has not been described in the scientific literature with respect to its reproductive behaviour in the wild. It is presumed to follow the typical Hyphessobrycon pattern: an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males in the genus often display competitive behaviours during courtship, intensifying their colour and fins to attract receptive females.
Spawning in related species occurs among fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate, with the pair swimming closely together and releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that scatter among plants. These general reproductive traits of the genus have been documented for many Hyphessobrycon species in the aquarium, though no specific field observations for H. niger are recorded.
Breeding
No captive breeding accounts for Hyphessobrycon niger have been published in the reviewed sources, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade at the time of writing. Based on congener biology, breeding would be expected to follow the standard Hyphessobrycon protocol: conditioning adults on varied live and frozen foods, providing fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as egg depositories, and removing adults after spawning to prevent predation on eggs.
Eggs in related species are small and hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures; fry are tiny and require very small first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' small adult size, extra attention to fine-particle foods throughout the fry-rearing phase would be advisable.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon niger is not currently an established aquarium species. It was described from wild-caught material and has not entered the ornamental trade in meaningful numbers. Any specimens available would almost certainly be wild-caught from the Meta region of Colombia.
If kept, the husbandry requirements would likely parallel those of other small, lowland Colombian Hyphessobrycon: soft to moderately hard, warm water (roughly 75–82 °F), neutral to slightly acidic pH, gentle filtration, a planted tank with subdued lighting to encourage natural colouration, and a species group of six or more to promote shoaling behaviour. Its very small size means it should be kept with suitably small, peaceful tankmates that will not outcompete it at feeding.
Conservation
FishBase records Hyphessobrycon niger as Least Concern (LC) based on a 2020 assessment, though no dedicated IUCN Red List assessment page was located during research for this article. The species is recorded as endemic to Colombia, known primarily from the type locality in the upper Orinoco drainage of Meta department.
As a narrow-range endemic, H. niger is potentially vulnerable to habitat degradation from agriculture, cattle ranching, and petroleum extraction, all of which are active in the Meta department llanos. However, absence from wider assessments and limited available distributional data make it difficult to evaluate population trends. The species' small known range warrants monitoring as surveys of the Colombian Orinoco ichthyofauna continue.
