Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon ocasoensis was described by García-Alzate and Román-Valencia in 2008 in the journal Animal Biodiversity and Conservation (31(2): 11–23), based on specimens collected from the upper Cauca River drainage (Alto Cauca) in western Colombia. The type locality is the protected area Montaña el Ocaso, near the town of Quimbaya in Quindío Department. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hyphessobrycon ocasoensis García-Alzate & Román-Valencia, 2008.
The species is placed within the heterorhabdus species group of Hyphessobrycon, a large assemblage of small South American tetras within the family Characidae. The genus Hyphessobrycon is itself vast — among the most species-rich of all characid genera — and the placement of ocasoensis within the heterorhabdus group rests on a combination of colour-pattern and meristic characters detailed in the original description.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon ocasoensis is a small, slender-to-moderately deep-bodied tetra with a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1.5 in (1.5 in SL). Like other members of the genus it has the typical characid body form: a laterally compressed, fusiform body, a small terminal mouth, and the characteristic adipose fin of the order Characiformes.
Detailed meristic and colour data are provided in the original description by García-Alzate and Román-Valencia. The heterorhabdus group to which it belongs is generally characterised by a dark lateral stripe and associated colour markings that help distinguish these species from the broader Hyphessobrycon assemblage. Specific chromatic details beyond the group-level pattern are not well documented outside the primary description, and published photographs of live specimens in the aquarium literature are sparse.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the upper Cauca River basin (Alto Cauca) in western Colombia, with the type locality in the Montaña el Ocaso nature reserve in Quindío Department. Within that landscape it inhabits oligotrophic freshwater streams characterised by rocky substrate and clear water — a stream type associated with the Andean foothills of this region.
Water chemistry at the type locality was recorded at approximately pH 7.2, consistent with the slightly alkaline to neutral conditions typical of many Andean foothill streams. The upper Cauca basin is subject to seasonal drought, during which eutrophication pressure on smaller streams can intensify, a stressor noted in the original description as a threat to the species' habitat. The confinement of known records to a single protected area makes the Montaña el Ocaso reserve essentially the species' entire documented range.
Feeding
Dietary information from the original description indicates that H. ocasoensis consumes algae, insects, and detritus in the wild — a broadly omnivorous diet consistent with other small hyphessobrycon tetras from stream habitats. The combination of plant material, aquatic invertebrates, and organic detritus suggests opportunistic feeding across the water column and along the substrate.
In the aquarium, the species would be expected to accept the range of foods taken by comparable small tetras: quality micro-pellets and flake, along with frozen or live invertebrate foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and micro-worms to supplement the diet and support condition.
Mating
No detailed observations of mating behaviour in H. ocasoensis have been published. Based on its placement within Hyphessobrycon and general family biology, the species would be expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care — the reproductive mode typical of the genus. Males likely display to females with fin erection and lateral posturing, as is common among small characids.
In the aquarium, conditioning a group of adults with live and frozen foods and providing fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops for egg deposition follows the standard approach for small hyphessobrycon tetras. Specific reproductive data such as clutch size and spawning temperature have not been formally documented for this species.
Breeding
Hyphessobrycon ocasoensis has not been extensively reported in captive breeding literature, and detailed aquarium-breeding accounts are not available in published sources. The general breeding template for small Hyphessobrycon applies: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, adhesive eggs, and no parental care. Adults will eat eggs and should be removed after spawning.
Incubation times and fry-rearing data specific to this species are undocumented in the sources consulted. A conditioning temperature around the species' native stream conditions (consistent with pH ~7.2, oligotrophic water) would be the logical starting point for aquarists attempting to breed it.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon ocasoensis is a rare species in the hobby and is not commonly available in the ornamental fish trade. Its small size (around 1.5 in SL) and probable peaceful temperament place it in the category of nano or community tetras suitable for smaller planted aquaria. Water conditions reflecting its native oligotrophic Andean stream habitat — neutral pH around 7.0–7.5, moderate temperature, and good oxygenation — would be appropriate.
Because the species has a very restricted natural range inside a Colombian nature reserve and faces documented habitat pressure, hobbyist interest in maintaining and breeding captive populations has conservation value beyond the purely aesthetic. Standard small-tetra husbandry — a well-planted tank, a group of six or more individuals, varied diet, and stable water quality — applies in the absence of species-specific aquarium literature.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon ocasoensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 2014. This designation reflects the species' presence within the protected area Montaña el Ocaso, which provides a degree of formal habitat protection. However, the known range is extremely restricted: all confirmed records originate from a single nature reserve in Quindío Department, Colombia.
The original description notes that the upper Cauca basin faces eutrophication pressure during drought periods, a threat relevant to the oligotrophic streams this species occupies. Endemic species with ranges confined to a single locality are inherently vulnerable to stochastic events, habitat degradation, and water quality changes regardless of their current Red List category. Continued protection of the Montaña el Ocaso reserve and monitoring of water quality in the Alto Cauca streams it inhabits remain the primary conservation priorities for this species.
