Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon otrynus was formally described by Ricardo C. Benine and Felipe S. Lopes in 2008. The holotype (USNM 349418), a male measuring 1 in standard length, was collected from the río Las Marías at Quebrada Seca in the río Portuguesa drainage, Portuguesa State, Venezuela. The species belongs to Hyphessobrycon, the largest genus in Characidae, which encompasses hundreds of small tetras distributed across Central and South America.
Within the genus, H. otrynus falls in a group of species in which males develop one or more enlarged bony hooks on the anal fin rays — a derived character present in many Hyphessobrycon and a handful of related characid genera. Its closest relative based on the original description is H. diancistrus, from which it is distinguished by the possession of two very large, spur-like hooks rather than the smaller hooks of that species. The family Characidae, under current taxonomy recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, encompasses the tetras and their relatives as by far the most species-rich family among the Characiformes.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon otrynus is a small characid, with males reaching approximately 1 in standard length based on the holotype measurement. Like other members of the genus it has the typical Hyphessobrycon body plan: laterally compressed and moderately deep-bodied, with a rounded head, a terminal mouth, and a single dorsal fin.
The most distinctive feature is the pair of two very large, bony, spur-like hooks borne on the anal fin rays of mature males — a character that gives the species its name. These hooks are substantially larger than those seen in H. diancistrus and appear to be unique within the genus at this size. They are present on males only and are presumed to play a role in courtship or spawning behaviour. Colouration and precise body proportions are not fully documented in available sources; the species' small size and restricted range mean that detailed descriptions beyond the type series characters are not yet widely published.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon otrynus is known from the río Portuguesa drainage, a major left-bank tributary of the Orinoco river in Portuguesa State, Venezuela. The type locality is a small stream — río Las Marías at Quebrada Seca — and the species is a freshwater inhabitant of the Venezuelan llanos region.
Streams of the Orinoco system in this region are characterised by clear to lightly tannin-stained water, moderate current in smaller tributaries, and substrates of sand and leaf litter. Water chemistry in Venezuelan lowland streams is typically acidic to neutral, soft to moderately soft, and warm year-round; the available habitat notes for this species suggest conditions typical of Orinoco tributary streams, likely in the range of 75–82 °F and near-neutral pH, though no precise measurements for the type-locality stream have been published in accessible sources.
Feeding
No specific feeding studies have been published for Hyphessobrycon otrynus. As a small Hyphessobrycon tetra, it is expected to be a generalised micropredator and omnivore in the manner typical of the genus, feeding on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — as well as fine particulate organic material and algae where available.
In an aquarium setting, small Hyphessobrycon species accept a wide range of foods including quality micro-pellets, crushed flake, and frozen or live foods such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and microworm. A varied diet supports conditioning and good colour. Given the species' small adult size, appropriately sized food particles are important — oversized foods are generally ignored or cannot be consumed.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon otrynus has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions in any source available at the time of writing. Based on the biology of the genus and the Characidae more broadly, it is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner: mature pairs or groups release adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over other submerged structure, with no parental care following spawning.
The two large bony hooks on the anal fin of males are presumed to function during spawning contact — the male hooks onto the female during the spawning embrace, a behaviour documented in other hook-bearing Hyphessobrycon species. The significance of the unusually large size of these spurs in H. otrynus relative to related species is not yet explained by behavioural observations.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Hyphessobrycon otrynus have been published in accessible sources. By analogy with other small Hyphessobrycon species, successful breeding would likely follow the standard approach for egg-scattering tetras: a well-conditioned pair or small group placed in a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, slightly warmer water (approximately 79–82 °F), very soft to moderately soft and acidic to neutral water, and subdued lighting.
Eggs would be expected to be small and semi-adhesive, scattered among vegetation and abandoned. Adults will eat eggs if given the opportunity, so breeders would need to remove adults or eggs promptly after spawning. Fry of small Hyphessobrycon species are initially tiny and require infusoria or rotifers before accepting newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Actual breeding data for this species remain unpublished.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon otrynus is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It is not commercially available and no husbandry accounts appear in available hobby literature. As a small tetra from a clear, flowing Orinoco tributary, it would logically be housed in a well-oxygenated, planted aquarium with soft to neutral water at tropical temperatures (approximately 75–82 °F), conditions broadly suitable for most Hyphessobrycon from the Orinoco basin.
If specimens were obtained, a tank of 23.5 in or more, kept in a small group of six or more to encourage natural schooling behaviour, with fine-leaved plants, a dark substrate, and relatively low lighting, would replicate conditions appropriate to its habitat. Its small size (around 1 in SL) makes it suitable only for aquariums with other small, peaceful fishes. The distinctive male hooks would make it of interest to characid specialists and enthusiasts of rare South American tetras.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon otrynus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment recorded as of November 2020 in FishBase. The Least Concern listing reflects a judgement that the species does not meet the quantitative thresholds for a threatened category, presumably on the basis that the río Portuguesa system supports a reasonably intact watershed and the species is not subject to targeted collection pressure given its obscurity in the hobby.
The Orinoco basin more broadly faces pressures from agricultural expansion, sedimentation, and water extraction associated with the Venezuelan llanos, and small range-restricted stream fishes can be locally vulnerable to habitat degradation. As a species known from a restricted drainage and described only in 2008, its actual population size and the full extent of its range remain incompletely documented. No specific conservation measures are in place for H. otrynus.
