Hyphessobrycon paepkei is a small, rosy-bodied tetra from the Rio Negro drainage of Brazil, described in 2014 and distinguished from its many congeners by a prominent golden or brassy shoulder blotch that gives the fish its common name. Reaching only about 1.5 in standard length, it belongs to the large and variable rosy-tetra group within Hyphessobrycon and was first brought to wider attention through specimens that appeared in the ornamental-fish trade before the formal scientific description. The species is assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, reflecting how little is yet known of its wild ecology and population status.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon paepkei was formally described by Zarski in 2014. The type specimens passed through the ornamental-fish trade — Aquarium Glaser GmbH in Germany was among the first to document the fish — and the description was grounded in material associated with the Rio Negro basin of Amazonas state, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name, which remains Hyphessobrycon paepkei Zarski, 2014.

The species belongs to Hyphessobrycon, the largest and most taxonomically complex genus of small South American characins, a group that encompasses the rosy tetras, the bleeding-heart tetras, and dozens of other colourful, often commercially important small fish. Molecular and morphological revisions of the genus continue, and the boundaries of species groups within it remain contested; H. paepkei falls near the rosy-tetra assemblage on the basis of coloration and body proportions. FishBase lists the species under Characidae, which is here retained as the family assignment in accordance with that reference.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon paepkei is a small, laterally compressed tetra reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length. The body shape is typical of the rosy-tetra group: moderately deep, with a slightly arched dorsal profile and a pointed snout. Coloration centres on a pinkish to rosy body with a conspicuous golden or brassy shoulder spot — the character that distinguishes it from superficially similar congeners in the trade — and the fins may carry reddish tints consistent with the rosy-tetra complex.

As with most small Hyphessobrycon, the species carries the adipose fin characteristic of characins and the lateral line may be incomplete or partially reduced, a feature common in the genus. Detailed published meristic data for H. paepkei are sparse in the accessible literature; the descriptions available emphasise the shoulder marking and overall rosy-pink body as the principal diagnostic features useful to aquarists and traders.

Habitat

FishBase assigns H. paepkei to the Rio Demini basin of Brazil, a tributary system of the Rio Negro in Amazonas state, while Aquarium Glaser's trade documentation references the Rio Negro more broadly as the source of commercial specimens. The Rio Negro and its tributaries drain one of the most distinctive aquatic environments in South America: dark, extremely soft, acidic blackwater stained with tannins from decomposing organic matter. The river earns its name from water the colour of strong tea, with pH values often below 5 and conductivity among the lowest of any major river system.

Small characins in this system typically inhabit shallow, shaded tributaries, flooded forest margins, and slow-flowing side channels where dense aquatic or overhanging terrestrial vegetation provides cover and a rain of invertebrate food from above. Water temperatures in the Rio Negro basin are warm year-round, generally in the range of 75–82 °F, and the extreme softness and acidity of the water appear to be important for conditioning and breeding in many species from this region.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of H. paepkei in the wild has been published in the accessible literature. Like most small Hyphessobrycon species, it is presumed to be an opportunistic micropredator and omnivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, surface-fallen insects, zooplankton, and incidental plant material in its natural blackwater habitat.

In aquarium keeping, the species accepts the range of foods typical for small tetras: high-quality micro-pellets and fine flake, supplemented with frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, and Cyclops. Offering live and frozen foods alongside dry food supports condition and coloration, and the golden shoulder patch shows most vividly in well-fed, healthy specimens.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon paepkei is presumed to follow the egg-scattering, open-spawning reproductive strategy universal to the rosy-tetra group. Males in breeding condition likely display intensified coloration and pursue females actively, performing short side-by-side swimming passes near fine-leaved vegetation or other substrate, releasing eggs and milt in brief spawning drives. No parental bond forms, and neither sex guards eggs or fry.

As with other small Hyphessobrycon from blackwater drainages, spawning in captivity may be facilitated by soft, acidic water that approximates conditions in the Rio Negro system. Groups kept in good condition in appropriately soft, warm water may spawn spontaneously without deliberate intervention from the keeper.

Breeding

No published captive-breeding account for H. paepkei has been located in the available sources, but the reproductive pattern expected for a small Hyphessobrycon from the rosy-tetra group is egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among vegetation and no subsequent parental care. The adults will consume their own eggs if given the opportunity, and breeders of related species routinely remove eggs or spawning medium to a separate rearing container.

Soft, slightly acidic water — reflecting the blackwater origins of the species — is likely to improve spawning success and egg viability. Aquarium Glaser noted keeping the species at around 77 °F and pH 6.5, parameters that serve as a practical starting point. Fry would require very fine first foods, as is standard for small characins, progressing from infusoria or commercial micro-fry food to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Published data on clutch size, incubation time, and fry development are not available for this species.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon paepkei first appeared in the European ornamental-fish trade before its formal scientific description, which speaks to its appeal as a colourful, compact tetra with a distinctive shoulder marking. It is best kept in a group of six or more, as a shoaling species that displays more natural behaviour and richer coloration when outnumbered by conspecifics. A well-planted tank with subdued lighting, dark substrate, and some surface shadow — evoking the shaded tributaries of the Rio Negro — suits the species well and enhances the golden shoulder patch against the rosy body.

Water chemistry should lean toward soft and slightly acidic, consistent with its blackwater origins: a pH around 6.0–7.0 and low hardness are preferable, though Aquarium Glaser kept specimens successfully at pH 6.5 and approximately 77 °F. The species is peaceful and of a size appropriate for community aquaria with other small, non-aggressive tetras, small rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, and bottom-dwelling corydoras or small loricariids. Its modest size and dietary simplicity make it a manageable choice for aquarists with some experience keeping blackwater species.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon paepkei is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed in November 2018. The Data Deficient category signals that insufficient information exists to evaluate the species' extinction risk; it does not imply that the species is not threatened, only that the evidence is too limited to assign a threat category.

The species originates from the Rio Negro system, a vast and largely pristine Amazonian basin where industrial deforestation pressure has historically been lower than in parts of the Amazon proper, but which faces growing threats from illegal mining, infrastructure development, and climate-driven changes to hydrology. Wild collection for the ornamental trade occurs in the Rio Negro basin, and without population data it is not possible to determine whether collection pressure on H. paepkei is sustainable. Aquarists keeping this species are encouraged to source tank-bred specimens where available and to support efforts to document the species' actual range and abundance.
