Hyphessobrycon pando is a diminutive blackwater tetra from the remote Manuripi River of Bolivia's Pando Department — a species named for the very department in which it was discovered. Reaching barely 1.5 in standard length, it is a slender, red-bodied characin with a crisp black humeral spot and a darkened dorsal marking, found in soft, acidic water draining into the lowland Amazon at around 571 ft elevation. Known from a single locality within the Manuripi Heath National Park, it qualifies as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List by virtue of its protected setting, though the full extent of its distribution remains incompletely surveyed.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon pando was described by G. Hein in 2009, with the type locality given as the Manuripi River near Puerto Cardenas in Pando Department, northern Bolivia, at an elevation of approximately 571 ft. The species name is a direct toponym, referencing the Bolivian department where it was collected. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Hyphessobrycon pando Hein, 2009; no subsequent revisions have moved it from Hyphessobrycon.

Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae, encompassing well over a hundred species of small, often colourful tetras distributed across lowland South America. The genus is diagnosed in part by a combination of soft-rayed fins, an adipose fin, and typically 8 dorsal soft rays — H. pando falls within this meristic envelope, with 8–9 dorsal soft rays recorded and 22–25 anal rays, the latter count on the high side relative to many congeners. The species has no scales on the caudal fin and an incomplete lateral line, two features noted in the original description and useful in field identification alongside the distinctive colour pattern.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon pando is a small, slender tetra, recorded to a maximum of 1.5 in standard length. The body is laterally compressed with a characteristic characin profile — moderately elongate, deepest just behind the head, tapering toward the caudal peduncle. The caudal fin bears no scales, and the lateral line is incomplete, two meristic details that distinguish the species within its genus.

The colouration is notable for a small tetra: the ground colour is red to reddish, overlaid with a distinct black humeral spot behind the operculum and a darkened marking associated with the dorsal fin base. These high-contrast pigment patches are visible in life and presumably serve species-recognition functions in the dimly lit blackwater habitat. Like many blackwater tetras, the red body tones would be intensified in the natural tannin-stained water of the Manuripi River. Dimorphism has not been formally described in published sources consulted, but female Hyphessobrycon species are generally deeper-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

The species is known from the Manuripi River near Puerto Cardenas in Pando Department, northern Bolivia. This river drains westward into the Madre de Dios system and ultimately the Amazon basin. The type locality lies at roughly 571 ft above sea level in the lowland Amazonian foothills, within the area protected by the Manuripi Heath Amazonian Wildlife National Reserve.

Water chemistry data recorded at the collection site reflects a classic blackwater environment: pH 5.9 and conductivity of only 15 µS/cm, indicating extremely soft, acidic water heavily stained with dissolved organic matter from decaying leaf litter and loamy, poorly buffered soils. The IUCN assessment notes loamy banks and an absence of rooting aquatic plants at the type locality — a habitat profile consistent with exposed riverbank margins and slow or slack backwater zones common in Amazonian blackwater tributaries. Whether the species also occurs in adjacent western Peru has not been confirmed.

Feeding

No stomach-content study specific to Hyphessobrycon pando has been published. The IUCN assessment characterises the diet as based on aquatic and terrestrial arthropods, consistent with the foraging ecology of most small Hyphessobrycon tetras in blackwater rivers, where invertebrate food items drift in from surrounding forest and accumulate in slow-moving margins.

FishBase assigns the species a trophic level of 2.9 ± 0.3, placing it firmly among invertebrate-feeding secondary consumers rather than specialist piscivores or herbivores. In the aquarium, closely related blackwater Hyphessobrycon species accept small live and frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and finely chopped bloodworm — as well as high-quality small-particle flake or micro-pellets. A protein-rich and varied diet is advisable, as it maintains both health and the red body colouration for which the species is valued.

Mating

No specific courtship or mating observations have been published for Hyphessobrycon pando. The species can be assumed to follow the general characin reproductive pattern typical of the genus: egg-scattering open-water spawning in which males pursue ripe females among fine-leaved vegetation or submerged plant debris, releasing adhesive eggs that settle among plants or substrate.

Male Hyphessobrycon typically display intensified colouration and more active pursuit behaviour when conditioning and approaching spawning condition. The red body tone and distinct black markings of H. pando may serve as visual signals during such displays, as analogous pigment patterns do in closely related species. No aquarium breeding record for this species was located in sources available at time of writing; the aquarium hobby notes that it may be misidentified in trade, so any captive breeding records attributed to it should be confirmed against meristic data.

Breeding

No documented breeding record for Hyphessobrycon pando in captivity is available in published or hobbyist sources consulted. Based on the biology of the genus, spawning would be expected to follow the standard Hyphessobrycon pattern: a soft-water, slightly acidic, warm aquarium with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, conditioned adults fed live foods, spawning over several sessions with small numbers of adhesive eggs deposited among the plants.

For closely related blackwater Hyphessobrycon species, breeding temperatures in the range of 81–82 °F in soft, acidic water (pH 6.0–6.5) have proven productive. Eggs are adhesive and typically hatch within 24–36 hours at these temperatures; fry are free-swimming a few days later and require very fine first foods. Adults show no parental care and will consume both eggs and fry if not separated promptly. Given the species' single known wild locality and its protected-area status, establishing a captive breeding population would be of conservation value.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon pando is rarely encountered in the mainstream ornamental trade and is considered a specialist fish. The IUCN assessment notes that the species is often misidentified in the aquarium trade, meaning that fish sold under this name may not always be correctly identified — hobbyists seeking the genuine species should verify against the published description, particularly the meristic counts (dorsal rays 8–9, anal rays 22–25, no caudal scales, incomplete lateral line) and the specific collection locality.

Where genuine specimens are available, care follows the template for blackwater Hyphessobrycon tetras. Soft, acidic water (pH around 5.5–6.5, conductivity well below 100 µS/cm) with warm temperatures approximating the type-locality range is appropriate. Tannin-stained water created with botanicals, peat filtration, or commercial blackwater extracts closely replicates the natural environment and tends to enhance colouration. The species is small and should be housed with appropriately sized, non-aggressive tankmates; a species aquarium or a biotope setup reproducing a Pando-region blackwater margin is an ideal context. Group sizes of six or more are recommended, as with most small tetras.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon pando was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2016 (Sarmiento & Carvajal, assessed 21 April 2014). The principal rationale for the LC designation is that the known type locality falls within the Manuripi Heath Amazonian Wildlife National Reserve, a large protected area in northern Bolivia, providing a meaningful degree of habitat security for the population.

Despite the LC status, the species' ecology warrants caution. It is known from a single confirmed locality, and the population trend is listed as unknown. The possibility of occurrence in western Peru has been noted but not verified. The restricted distribution means that any significant degradation of the Manuripi River catchment — whether from deforestation, agricultural expansion, or water-quality change — could affect the entire known range of the species. Thorough distributional surveys within the Manuripi drainage and adjacent systems would help establish whether the Least Concern assessment reflects a genuinely widespread population or a narrow endemic that happens to fall within protected boundaries.
