Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon paucilepis was formally described by Carlos A. García-Alzate, César Román-Valencia, and Donald C. Taphorn in 2008. The holotype (IUQ 1897) was collected from the overflow channel of Los Quediches Reservoir in Lara state, Venezuela, which remains the only confirmed type locality. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authority for valid names) places the species in Hyphessobrycon Durbin, within the family Characidae.
The species belongs to the large and morphologically diverse genus Hyphessobrycon, a group of small New World characids spanning much of tropical South America. Comparative morphology places it within Venezuelan representative species, from which it is principally distinguished by a reduced number of scales — both laterally and in the predorsal series — that is unusual among its congeners in that region. Subsequent revisionary work on related Venezuelan species (including revisions of the heterorhabdus-group) has confirmed its dorsal-fin ray formula of three unbranched plus eight branched rays as a useful diagnostic character.
