Hyphessobrycon peruvianus is a small, attractively marked characid from the upper Amazon basin of Peru and adjacent Brazil, haunting the shadowed quebradas — narrow, tannin-stained tributary streams overhung with vegetation — where the water runs soft, acidic, and slow. Long a modestly traded species in the ornamental hobby, it is often confused with its close relative H. loretoensis; both belong to the H. aghula species group and share a similar colour scheme, but peruvianus is the more widespread and the better documented. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2014.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon peruvianus was described by Werner Ladiges in 1938, in an account of material collected during an expedition to the middle Amazon. The type locality is placed between Tabatinga (Brazil) and Iquitos (Peru), along the Solimões–Amazonas corridor in Loreto State, Peru. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes confirms the valid name and authority as Hyphessobrycon peruvianus Ladiges, 1938; the authority is not parenthetical, as the species has remained in Hyphessobrycon since its original description.

The species belongs to the H. aghula species group within the large and heterogeneous genus Hyphessobrycon, one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae. It is most frequently confused with H. loretoensis (also from the Iquitos region) and with H. metae; distinguishing these trio in the field or aquarium requires attention to colour-pattern details and body proportions rather than any single obvious feature. FishBase notes that some classifications have moved the broader American tetra assemblage into Acestrorhamphidae, but the top-level family assignment used here follows the current working treatment of Characidae.

Morphology

H. peruvianus is a small characid reaching around 1–1.5 in standard length (Seriously Fish), with FishBase recording a maximum of 1.5 in SL. It is a typical small Hyphessobrycon in body plan: slender to moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed, with the rounded snout and large eye characteristic of the genus. The two adipose and dorsal fins are well developed, and the caudal fin is forked.

The colour pattern centres on a dark, roughly rectangular humeral spot behind the operculum and a lateral band or stripe running back toward the caudal peduncle, where it typically intensifies into a dark blotch. The body is otherwise silvery to pale yellowish, with a faint iridescent sheen under good lighting. Males in peak condition show more saturated pigmentation than females. The species is not as vividly coloured as the more popular Hyphessobrycon species in the hobby, but groups in a well-planted, dark-substrate tank display a quiet, coherent elegance.

Habitat

The species ranges across the upper Amazon basin, recorded from the Ríos Amazonas–Solimões, Marañón, Napo, Itaya, Tigre, Corrientes, and Ucayali drainages, primarily in Loreto department of Peru and adjacent Amazonas state of Brazil. It inhabits small, shallow tributary streams (quebradas) rather than main-channel river water, typically where overhanging vegetation, submerged branches, exposed tree roots, and leaf litter provide dense structural cover and a layer of shade.

The water in such quebradas is characteristically soft and acidic, stained brown by humic compounds leaching from leaf litter and decaying wood. Seriously Fish gives a working range of pH 5.0–7.0 and hardness 36–179 ppm (the upper end reflecting seasonal or site variation), with temperatures of 72–81 °F. FishBase records pH 6.0–7.0, dH 5–10, and a tropical range of 75–79 °F for the core population. These are low-energy, structurally complex environments with little current — very different from the open, fast-flowing várzea channels of the main Amazon.

Feeding

In the wild H. peruvianus is an opportunistic omnivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — along with fallen fruit and other organic material that collects in the leaf-litter and root tangles of its quebrada habitat. The species forages at mid-water and near the substrate, exploiting whatever the slow-flowing water delivers.

In the aquarium it is straightforward to feed, accepting high-quality small flake or micro-pellets as a staple and responding well to regular offerings of small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm. A varied diet improves colour and keeps the fish in breeding condition; a monotonous flake-only regime produces paler, less active individuals. Like most small tetras it does best fed small amounts twice daily rather than a single large meal.

Mating

H. peruvianus is an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, following the typical Hyphessobrycon reproductive pattern. Males in breeding condition are more intensely coloured than females, and ripe females become noticeably fuller and rounder in the abdomen. Courtship consists of the male pursuing and flanking the female, orienting side-by-side over a spawning substrate.

Spawning takes place among fine-leaved aquatic plants or other dense, filamentous cover. The pair release adhesive eggs that settle among or cling to plant leaves and stems. In a community tank most eggs are consumed quickly by other fish or by the parents themselves; deliberate breeding requires either removing adults after spawning or transferring the egg-laden plants to a separate rearing vessel.

Breeding

Breeding H. peruvianus in captivity follows the standard small-tetra protocol. A dedicated spawning tank of 10–15 US gal, furnished with clumps of fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Cabomba, or synthetic spawning mops) and lit dimly, works well. Soft, slightly acidic water — pH 6.0–6.8, hardness below 10 dH, temperature around 79 °F — encourages spawning. A conditioning period on live and frozen foods brings both sexes into readiness within a week or two.

Adults are removed as soon as spawning is confirmed, or the eggs are transferred to a clean rearing container, since the fish will eat their own spawn without hesitation. The adhesive eggs hatch in roughly 24–36 hours at 79 °F, and the fry become free-swimming after another two to three days once the yolk sac is absorbed. First foods are infusoria or commercial fry preparations, with newly hatched Artemia nauplii and micro-worm introduced as the fry grow. Growth is steady under good conditions; the young reach sellable size in two to three months.

In the aquarium

The Peru tetra is an adaptable, peaceful shoaling fish that does best in a group of eight or more individuals in a well-planted aquarium. Its natural biotope — tannin-stained, dim, root-tangled blackwater — can be evoked with driftwood, dried leaf litter, a dark substrate, and subdued lighting; under these conditions the fish relax, shoal naturally, and show their best colour. A tank length of 23.5–31.5 in is comfortable for a small group of adults.

Water chemistry should be on the soft, acidic side: pH 6.0–7.0, low hardness, temperature 72–81 °F. The species tolerates a wider range than its natural habitat implies, but extremes of hardness or alkalinity should be avoided. It is entirely peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive characids, small corydoras, and dwarf cichlids that share its water-parameter requirements. The Peru tetra is not widely available in mainstream retail but appears reliably in specialist shops and at aquarium society auctions; most stock in the hobby is wild-caught or sourced from small-scale breeders. Confusingly, it may be sold under the name 'Loreto tetra', a label it shares with H. loretoensis, so confirming identification at purchase is worthwhile.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon peruvianus was assessed by the IUCN in April 2014 and listed as Least Concern (LC). The assessment reflects a broad distribution across multiple river drainages in the upper Amazon basin and no evidence of major population decline or acute threat. The species is collected for the ornamental trade from the Iquitos region of Peru, one of the most active wild-fish export hubs in South America, but collection at current levels is not considered to be driving a decline.

The upper Amazon basin faces ongoing habitat pressure from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining, all of which degrade the small tributary streams that H. peruvianus favours. These pressures are diffuse rather than targeted at any single species, and the Peru tetra's range is wide enough that localised habitat loss is unlikely to threaten it at the population level in the near term. No specific conservation measures are in place for the species.
