Hyphessobrycon poecilioides was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913 from material collected in the Cauca River basin of Colombia. The genus Hyphessobrycon belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes, and encompasses well over 150 valid species distributed across South America and Central America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon poecilioides Eigenmann, 1913.
The genus name combines the Greek hyphesson (lesser, smaller) and brykon (to bite), a diminutive construction reflecting the small size of members relative to the more broadly biting characids. This naming convention was applied liberally by early describers to distinguish smaller Neotropical characins from their larger relatives. The species epithet poecilioides is Neo-Latin, formed from Poecilia with the suffix -oides (from Greek eidos, form or appearance), meaning 'resembling Poecilia' or 'Poecilia-like in form', a reference to some aspect of the fish's colouration or body patterning that Eigenmann found reminiscent of the livebearing family Poeciliidae.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon poecilioides reaches a maximum total length of approximately 2.5 in, placing it in the mid-size range for the genus. Like other Hyphessobrycon it is a slender, laterally compressed characid with the typical tetra body plan: a forked caudal fin, a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and the small teeth and large eyes common across the family. Its benthopelagic habits suggest it spends time both in the lower water column and in open midwater.
The species' common name and epithet imply a patterned, variably coloured appearance reminiscent of poeciliid livebearers — but detailed colour descriptions in the available literature are sparse. Sexual dimorphism, if present, is not well documented in accessible sources, which is typical for many lesser-studied Hyphessobrycon species outside the flagship hobby species.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon poecilioides is distributed in the Cauca River basin in what is now Colombia, South America. The Cauca is one of Colombia's principal river systems, a major tributary of the Magdalena, draining the western cordilleras before joining the larger river to the north. As a benthopelagic tropical freshwater species it inhabits the warmer, lowland and foothill reaches of the system.
Specific microhabitat data for this species are not well represented in available literature. By analogy with the broader genus and with the Cauca basin's character, it likely occupies clear to moderately turbid flowing waters associated with vegetated margins, submerged roots, and leaf litter. Small tetras of this type are shoaling fish and display best in groups of six or more. Tankmates should be peaceful and similarly sized — other small characids, small rasboras, or non-aggressive dwarf cichlids. A planted setup with open swimming lanes and areas of shade created by floating plants or overhanging leaves replicates the natural habitat and reduces stress. As with any less-studied species, careful observation of behaviour and condition remains the best guide to husbandry.
