Hyphessobrycon procerus is a small, poorly-known characid from the Guyrau-gua River basin of the Caaguazú Department in eastern Paraguay. Reaching only 1.5 in standard length, it is among the more slender members of a genus that spans several hundred species across South and Central America. Its restricted range and documented habitat degradation have led the IUCN to assess it as Endangered — a status that stands in contrast to its near-total absence from the aquarium trade and ichthyological literature outside the original description.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon procerus was described by Volker Mahnert and Jacques Géry in 1987. The holotype, catalogued as MHNG 2385.068 at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève, measures 1.5 in SL and was collected from the río Guyrau-gua in the Caaguazú Department of Paraguay, which serves as the type locality. Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon procerus Mahnert & Géry, 1987; no subsequent revision has moved the species to a different genus, so the authority is used without parentheses.

The species belongs to the large and taxonomically unwieldy genus Hyphessobrycon, one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae. Hyphessobrycon in the broad sense is considered polyphyletic by many ichthyologists, and ongoing phylogenetic work continues to partition and regroup its members; H. procerus has not been the subject of revisionary study and its precise affinities within the genus remain unresolved. The neotropical characids of this region are poorly collected overall, and H. procerus is essentially known only from the original description and a handful of subsequent records.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon procerus is a very small characid, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. The holotype of 1.5 in SL represents the largest documented specimen. Like most Hyphessobrycon, it is a slender, laterally compressed fish with the family's characteristic adipose fin, forked tail, and a relatively terminal mouth suited to feeding in the water column.

Detailed morphological information beyond the type description is sparse in the available literature. The specific epithet procerus — meaning tall, long, or slender in Latin — may indicate a body form that is more elongate relative to close congeners, though the precise diagnostic characters used in the original description have not been widely reproduced in secondary sources. Colour pattern in life has not been documented in detail in the accessible literature.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the río Guyrau-gua basin in the Caaguazú Department of eastern Paraguay, a tributary system draining into the broader Paraguay River drainage of South America. This is a subtropical inland lowland region characterised by warm temperatures and the slow to moderately flowing streams typical of the interior Paraguayan Chaco and Eastern Region ecotone.

In an aquarium context, most small Hyphessobrycon accept a varied diet of quality micro-pellets, Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and fine dried foods, and this would likely apply to H. procerus if it were to appear in the hobby.

Mating

No published observations of mating behaviour in Hyphessobrycon procerus are available. As with the vast majority of Hyphessobrycon species, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner that deposits adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged vegetation, following the general pattern documented across the genus.

Male characids in this group typically engage in brief chasing and parallel-swimming courtship prior to a spawning clasp during which eggs and sperm are released simultaneously. No parental care is provided; adults will consume eggs given the opportunity. Spawning details specific to H. procerus have not been recorded in the accessible literature.

Breeding

Hyphessobrycon procerus has not been reported in the aquarium trade or bred in captivity in any source available. Observations on breeding are therefore extrapolated from the genus rather than recorded for this species. Small Hyphessobrycon are generally egg-scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with no parental care and adults best separated from the eggs after spawning.

In related congeners, incubation at temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius typically proceeds over 24–72 hours, and fry are free-swimming within a few days. First foods for newly free-swimming fry are typically infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry preparations, with newly hatched brine shrimp introduced as the fry grow. Until H. procerus becomes available to hobbyists, these generalities from the genus represent the best available inference.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon procerus is not established in the aquarium trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside of ichthyological collections. No husbandry accounts exist in the hobby literature. Were it to become available, the standard approach for small, sensitive Hyphessobrycon species would apply: a well-planted tank with gentle filtration, soft to moderately hard water, temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, and a peaceful community of similarly sized fish.

Small Hyphessobrycon generally do best in groups of six or more, where social behaviour stabilises and the fish are less prone to stress. Their small size makes them incompatible with larger or more boisterous tankmates. Given the species' Endangered status and extremely restricted wild range, any future hobby interest should prioritise sourcing from captive-bred lines rather than wild collection.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon procerus is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(ii,iii), with the assessment published on 3 February 2021. The criteria indicate a restricted extent of occurrence combined with a continuing decline in the area, extent, or quality of habitat. The species is confined to the río Guyrau-gua basin in Caaguazú Department, Paraguay — a small, geographically constrained drainage in a region experiencing ongoing land conversion for agriculture and livestock.

Eastern Paraguay has seen substantial deforestation and wetland degradation over recent decades, and small stream-dependent fish with limited ranges are disproportionately vulnerable to these pressures. H. procerus has essentially no buffer: there is no large metapopulation and no known alternative range. It does not occur in the aquarium trade in any meaningful way, so there is no captive reserve population. Conservation of the species depends on protecting the integrity of its native stream habitat, which in practical terms means land-use management and watershed protection in Caaguazú Department.
