Hyphessobrycon procyon is a small, clear-water tetra from the Rio Juma, a tributary of the Rio Aripuanã in the Rio Madeira basin of Amazonas state, Brazil. Described in 2016 by Pastana and Ohara, the species is notable for the striking sexual dimorphism of the male's elongated dorsal fin, which reaches the adipose fin when depressed — a feature unusual enough within Hyphessobrycon to anchor the original diagnosis. It was named after Procyon, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Minor, which appears on the Brazilian flag as the symbol of Amazonas state.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon procyon was formally described by Murilo N.L. Pastana and Willian M. Ohara in 2016, in a paper published in Zootaxa (volume 4161, issue 3). The type locality is the Rio Juma, a clear-water tributary of the Rio Aripuanã — itself a major right-bank affluent of the Rio Madeira — in Amazonas state, Brazil, at approximately 7°12'43"S 59°55'18"W near the municipality of Apuí. The holotype (MZUSP 118846) is a 1.5 in SL male deposited in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo.

The species is placed in the large, heterogeneous genus Hyphessobrycon, which houses hundreds of small to medium-sized characins distributed across South and Central America. Some authorities, following post-2024 molecular reassignments, place a broad swathe of former Hyphessobrycon species within a rearranged family framework; the formal name as registered with Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, however, remains Hyphessobrycon procyon Pastana & Ohara, 2016, under Characidae. The ETYFish Project confirms the specific epithet: procyon is the name of the brightest star in the constellation Canis Minor, which appears on the Brazilian flag to represent Amazonas, the state in which the type locality falls.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon procyon is a small tetra; the type series spans 0.5–1 in standard length (SL), with the holotype, an adult male, measuring 1.5 in SL. Like other members of the genus it has the typical characid body plan — laterally compressed, with an adipose fin, and a complete lateral line — but is set apart by the sexually dimorphic dorsal fin: in mature males the dorsal-fin rays are markedly elongated, and when the fin is depressed it reaches the adipose fin, a character that was central to the original description. Males also have a longer pelvic fin and a darker dorsal fin with a more pronounced pigment pattern compared to females, whose dorsal fin is shorter and more rounded.

Anal fin ray counts fall in the range of 23 to 26, with a mode of 25 — a relatively high count within the genus. Beyond these features, the original description provides a detailed suite of meristic and morphometric data, but detailed colour descriptions of live specimens were not fully elaborated in the formal diagnosis. Stomach contents of two examined specimens contained nematoids, chironomid larvae, and plant fragments, consistent with a generalist insectivore-omnivore feeding guild.

Habitat

The type locality, Rio Juma, is a clear-water river approximately 40 metres wide at the collection site, with a depth of 0.5 to 2 metres, swift current, and a rocky bottom. Clear-water rivers in the Madeira drainage are characterised by relatively low tannin and humic acid loads compared to blackwater systems, moderate conductivity, and typical Amazonian low-to-neutral pH values. All collection lots were gathered in June 2015, corresponding to the late wet season or early dry season transition in that part of the Amazon basin.

The syntopic fauna recorded at the type locality gives a sense of the community: co-occurring species included Ancistrus sp., Characidium aff. zebra, Crenicichla pellegrini, Eigenmannia gr. trilineata, Farlowella amazonum, Gymnotus coropinae, Helogenes marmoratus, Leporinus maculatus, Moenkhausia comma, M. collettii, Otocinclus mura, Pimelodella cf. howesi, Poptella compressa, Satanoperca jurupari, and Tatia dunni — a diverse assemblage of small to medium-sized characins, cichlids, loricariids, and knife-fishes typical of a rocky, well-oxygenated clear-water stream. Known distribution is currently restricted to the Rio Aripuanã drainage; no other populations have been reported.

Feeding

Based on stomach-content analysis of two type-series specimens, H. procyon is an opportunistic omnivore with an insectivorous emphasis: contents included nematoids, chironomid (midge) larvae, and plant fragments. This profile is consistent with the feeding ecology of most small characins in South American clear-water streams, which exploit a mixed diet of invertebrate prey and incidental plant material dependent on local abundance.

In the aquarium, hobby sources suggest the species behaves as a typical small tetra: accepting high-quality dried flake and micro-pellets alongside frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Varied feeding supports condition and, presumably, the display colouration in males. Given the rocky, high-current type habitat, offering some live or frozen invertebrate food may better reflect the natural diet than a purely prepared-food regime.

Mating

No reproductive data were presented in the original description, and detailed field observations of courtship behaviour in the wild are not available from the sources assessed. By analogy with closely related Hyphessobrycon species — and consistent with the marked sexual dimorphism, particularly the male's elongated dorsal fin — it is reasonable to infer that the species engages in typical small-tetra display behaviour, with males using the exaggerated fin as a visual signal during courtship. The elongated dorsal fin reaching the adipose fin when depressed is an unusual character within the genus and likely plays a role in male-male competition or female choice.

Hobbyist accounts indicate that spawning has been observed relatively quickly after introduction to a new tank (one report notes spawning activity within a day in a quarantine tank), suggesting the species may respond promptly to environmental stimulation such as a water change or temperature shift. Open-water egg scattering among fine-leaved plants, with no parental care, is the expected mating strategy for a Hyphessobrycon of this type, though this has not been documented rigorously for H. procyon specifically.

Breeding

Formal breeding records for H. procyon in the scientific literature are absent; the original description notes that no reproductive data were available at time of description. Given the hobbyist observation of prompt spawning behaviour and the species' placement within Hyphessobrycon, breeding likely follows the standard characid egg-scattering pattern: sexually mature adults scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, after which the eggs develop without any parental attendance. Adults will consume both eggs and emerging fry if given the opportunity, so separating the spawn media or the adults promptly after spawning is advisable.

For those attempting to breed the species, a conditioning period on varied live and frozen foods, soft to moderately hard water (pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 75–82 °F based on habitat data and hobby parameters), and the addition of fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop should provide suitable conditions. Water parameters consistent with clear-water Amazonian tributaries — low conductivity, near-neutral pH — are likely to be most productive. Fry can be expected to require very small initial foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry diet before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon procyon appears to be available in the hobby, though it remains relatively obscure compared to more widely traded Hyphessobrycon species. Hobby sources describe it as suitable for a community aquarium in soft to moderately hard water (pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 72–86 °F), where it can be kept with other small, peaceful fish. As with essentially all tetras, it is best maintained in a group of six or more individuals; the male's elongated dorsal fin is most apparent and most attractively displayed when males interact socially.

Because the type locality is a swift, rocky, clear-water stream rather than a blackwater habitat, providing moderate water movement and good oxygenation may be beneficial. The species is small — adults in the type series reach roughly 1 in SL — so it is compatible with nano and community aquaria and does not require large tank volumes. Standard small-tetra husbandry applies: a planted tank with some open swimming space, appropriate small-bodied tankmates, and a varied diet will keep the fish in good condition and display the sexual dimorphism of adult males to best effect.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon procyon has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). The original describers noted that, based on the limited geographic range then known — restricted to the Rio Juma and the Rio Aripuanã drainage in Amazonas state — a preliminary designation of Least Concern (LC) was suggested pending a formal assessment, given no immediate threats were detected at the type locality at the time of collection.

The species' restricted known distribution (a single river system in Amazonas state) means that any future assessment would need to weigh area-of-occupancy criteria carefully. The Amazon basin faces ongoing pressures from deforestation and associated stream degradation, but the Rio Aripuanã drainage retains large areas of intact forest. Until a formal IUCN assessment is conducted and additional survey work clarifies the full distribution, no conservation category can be assigned with authority.
