Hyphessobrycon proteus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913, based on specimens collected during an ichthyological reconnaissance of Colombia, South America. The original description appeared in Indiana University Studies (No. 18, pp. 1–32) under the title 'Some results from an ichthyological reconnaissance of Colombia, South America.' Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon proteus Eigenmann, 1913; the species has remained in Hyphessobrycon, a large and taxonomically complex genus within the family Characidae.
Hyphessobrycon is one of the most species-rich genera of New World characids, encompassing several hundred described species of small, typically colourful tetras distributed across tropical Central and South America. The genus has long been recognised as polyphyletic, and ongoing molecular and morphological revisions continue to redistribute species among resurrected or newly erected genera; the placement of H. proteus within this shifting taxonomy should be verified against current Catalog of Fishes records.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon proteus is a moderately sized tetra, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 3 in for males — making it larger than many of its congeners. Like other members of the genus it has the typical characid body plan: laterally compressed, moderately deep, with a complete lateral line, a small adipose fin, and the forward-positioned dorsal fin that characterises the family.
The species is noted for colour variability across ontogeny and between individuals, a characteristic that inspired its name after the shape-shifting sea deity. Feeding

Adhesive eggs are scattered over the plants and fall to the substrate; breeders remove adults immediately after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Eggs typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and the fry become free-swimming a few days later. Initial food should be very fine: infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, advancing to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. The relatively larger adult size of this species compared to smaller Hyphessobrycon means fry are somewhat larger and progress to larger foods more quickly.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon proteus is relatively uncommon in the hobby compared with the more widely traded red-and-blue Hyphessobrycon species, but its larger size and colour-changing qualities make it an interesting subject for hobbyists seeking less familiar Colombian tetras. It can be kept in a community aquarium with similarly sized, non-aggressive species; like most Hyphessobrycon it is a shoaling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six to reduce stress and elicit natural behaviour.
A planted tank with subdued to moderate lighting, good water quality, and regular partial water changes suits it well. Water parameters consistent with Colombian lowland drainages — slightly acidic to neutral, soft to moderately hard, temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius — provide the best conditions. The species' documented colour variability makes it rewarding to observe under different lighting and social conditions.
Conservation
